Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Like I posted one time before I've been having lots of car problems(had to push my car through an intersection). I put in over $2000 worth of repair over the last year and a half or so. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I found it would cost over $700 to repair the latest damage so with that/the car being old plus and with more repairs coming in the future I said enough is enough. It was time to give the car up. That was a couple of months ago. Hopefully in a month's time I will be able to start financing a new car. I am looking at something cheap and good (probably a Kia) and now it's just a matter of rounding up some money. So if everything goes okay I'm going to be back on the road in a month or so. I can't wait because I really got used to driving as it's something I like to do. The gym waits for no man.
Cran Da Maniac 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Trust me, I've found if you put your car in the shop for the same problem about 3 times, it's not worth fixing anymore. You're best in doing like you said and getting a new car.
Guest The Satanic Angel Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Good luck with a Kia ... my dad worked at a baseball stadium in FL that gave away a Kia after one season ... the car was 'new', and my dad got to test drive it and taking it over 40mph caused it to shake violently. My guess is that it was a program car, but it still really turned me off to Kias. I've heard Saturns are okay ... and seemed to be cheaper when I was looking at cars. Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Depends what you want, I always found that used cars are pretty reliable because car dealerships aren't going to sell junk and most of those cars are still just as good as they were new. You probably aren't concerned about having a car that attracts females since KIAS and Saturns won't do that. Get a dependable car but something that won't crap out. Saturns are good for gas mileage and over-all dependency but there's alot open but seeing as you are too cheap to buy tapes over the internet, I can't imagine how you will car shop. Thanks for the replies everyone. The car that was breaking down on me was a 94 Buick. I will give it credit for 2 things though -- Fantastic reclining seats and the ability to startup anywhere no matter how cold it was. Oh, I'm the cheapest of the cheap. But for buying tapes over the internet? I had to put a stop to it because unless you're rich it's hard to financially reason this -- http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?showtopic=76316 -- Just realised that I didn't even copy and paste all of my partial tape list so now it's a partial tape list of a partial tape list! So the general vibe I'm getting here are that Saturns are better than KIAs? I was looking at one of the KIAs for $13,000 there and it looked pretty nice. I don't see many females sticking their noses up at that. One other thing I'm worried about is space inside the vehicle. What I want is enough room for my head not to be hitting the roof and enough leg space to comfortably drive. Even at only 6 foot 1 inch I find some of the cars today don't even have that much space. Of course, the ability to start up in the cold (I live in Canada), gas mileage and reliability are big factors as well.
Dimensions 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Hey buddy, I'm in the same boat. I have a 92 Audi 100, but it seems like every month there's something new to replace. Thank god it's only relatively minor stuff but still it's annoying. So with the money I'm saving I'm looking at getting a new car. I have found I can't live without all them goodies like leather, heated seats, sunroof power everything, etc. So I've been researching and I plan on staying away from used Audi, BMW, VW, Mercedes vehicles due to crazy amounts of electrical problems and stuff. So I'm gonna be sticking my head into a Lexus LS400, Volvo S60, or Toyota Avalon. I also have the issue of being tall so these cars are perfect. What I think you should do, if you wanna get a good reliable car for relatively cheap, is shoot for a Toyota, Nissan or Honda. I'm 6'2 and every Toyota and Honda I've been in have more than enough headroom but if you're also wide than you may have an issue with the smaller cars... Jingus 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2006 Get a Toyota. Period. My old Corolla lasted for eight years and over 130,000 miles. The only major problem I ever had was that I once had to replace the starter. And that's despite the fact that I was negligent as hell about getting the oil changed in a timely fashion and other maintenence issues. It took plowing it into a semi on the interstate at about 50 mph to finally kill the poor thing. And even though it's "totalled", not street legal, and looks pretty sorry, IT STILL DRIVES. The Japanese who made this thing outta look next into curing cancer, cuz I bet it'd only take them a couple of months.

The Niggardly King 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2006 Try to find an old Aerostar van. My father bought one of these when I was around 7, and it already had 115,000 miles on it. We put another 150,000 on before we had to get rid of it.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2006 They say a three year old American car is as reliable as a seven year old Japanese car....
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 17, 2006 For a family-sized van? Nope. Probably a truck that's slightly more efficient while still being a big fast fucker like mine. Ideally, I'd get an SRT10, but I'm not rich and shit. Anyone know how the fuel economy is on a diesel? Say a Ford F250. I'm moving about 30 miles away from my current job, and spending 65 bucks a week on gas ain't too cool. I'm not buying a pussy car.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 17, 2006 The most reliable car I ever owned was a 68 Cadillac Sedan Deville. I hit 4 deer in the motherfucker without a problem, drove it through a fence, a cornfield, and took it on a couple road trips. It got about 8 mpg, and would start no longer after the odometer rolled over past 400,000 miles; 115,000 of which were mine. Got it for $500.

AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2006 I've got a '95 Monte Carlo Z-34 that I really like. Instead of getting a new car, I'll drop a new motor in it (it currently has 160,00+) and and get a new paint job. Voila, new car.
geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2006 I'm probably getting something new soon, even though I drive a 2003. Just today I was driving home from a friends house and the car kept dieing on me. It would start up after I took the key out and then put it back in, but it did that 3 times on my way home.

Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted March 22, 2006 Yo WP, I'll help you pick a new car. Seriously. Good, good. Thank you. Toyota seems to be the toprunner right now as far as reliability goes and all that. Might be too expensive for me though.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2006 I want something cheap (in terms of both its price and MPG), durable (as in it won't break down on me all the time) and long lasting. Obviously it will be used. I don't plan on making any sorts of repairs/add-ons to the car once I get it. I really don't care about much else. Given all these criteria, what car should I get? Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2006 Two Grand at most. All the preferences I have are already stated. I really don't care about anything else. I don't see how brand name would matter if the car already meets all the criteria I want.
