King Kamala Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 Yeah, I also find this huge Simmons backlash to be bullshit. Bill Simmons to me is the sports column equivalent of The Simpsons. Yeah he's gone downhill quite a bit in the past year or two (Yeah, I know The Simpsons have been going downhill for the past decade) but he's still better than 90% of his peers and he still can come up with a genuinely hilarious column now and then. And I actually kind of like the podcast.
Craig Th Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Ha, they stuck Brady vs Ortiz in the first round.
Vern Gagne Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Michael Phelps next year might be able to hit 20% against Shaq. NBA columns is all Simmons ever seems to write about these days.
CanadianChris Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 It bothers me that he never diaries the second round. I watch it, why can't he? Probably because he has a deadline and a column length limit.
bob_barron Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 I thought this year's diary was terrible. He obviously didn't give a shit about the draft after the Celtics trade and just rushed it out so people would have their draft diary to read.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Ahh, found it. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more...t.ap/index.html Ragone said Paige once grabbed her backside so forcefully, she was "propelled forward and into the air." Ragone said the situation was exacerbated by a few female employees who didn't seem to mind the atmosphere, including a stylist who gave the men lap dances.
Vampiro69 Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Sounds like a heck of an interesting place to work. Also has anyone else in here read Simmon's book? Even though I am not a Red Sox fan I found it to be a great read.
Steve J. Rogers Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 Sounds like a heck of an interesting place to work. Also has anyone else in here read Simmon's book? Even though I am not a Red Sox fan I found it to be a great read. I may bring it as reading material when I go to Chicago in a few weeks. Should be a quick read on the plane.
Mik Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 It's from when he was at his writing peak. A LOT of LOL moments in that book.
fairtoflair7 Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 I rather read columns by Jemele Hill and Scoop Jackson then Bill Simmons. HAHA Simmons, while he has gone downhill a bit and can't be completely honest like he used to because of ESPN, still probably has the best sports column out there. He constantly mixes pop culture with sports and its always a great read. I constantly refresh ESPN just too see if his new entries are out yet. The onlly reason why people have started ripping him is that he is the first successful blogger that everyone wants to become. Its ridiculous
Black Lushus Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I can get used to JA Adande doing PTI and Michael Smith doing Rome Is Burning. but LeBetard still needs to die.
Mik Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 For the first time in years I didn't hit "Stop and Erase" on PTI without Mike and Tony. I love JA and I actually kind of like LeBetard. I think the ultimate B-Team is JA and Bob Ryan or Michael Smith and Bob Ryan. My ultimate B-Team is JA and Tim Cowlishaw (Top Cat vs. the Top Cat Killah) but I don't think they can get TC due to this other show's commitments.
Black Lushus Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Top Cat is great...the perfect Around the Horn would be Kevin Blackinston/Michael Smith (slight edge to Blackinstone), JA Adande, Tim Cowlishaw and Woody Paige.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 No. Woody Paige needs to go away. I actually prefer ATH when neither Paige or Mariotti or Plaschke is on. So my ideal ATH would feature Adande, Smith, Cowlishaw and Blackistone. Adande has definitely proven himself worthy of more PTI appearances though. Put him with Bob Ryan and we're solid.
Cheech Tremendous Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I thought JA "I'm not an OPS guy" Adande was absolutely brutal on PTI yesterday. I'm indifferent towards him on ATH but I thought he came off really poorly in the PTI setting. I can deal with Lebetard. At least he seems knowledgeable about all the subject matter.
Guest Smues Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I hate Lebatard, and his "I'm the hatable Dan Lebatard because I know you hate me and I'm going to mention the fact that you all hate me a lot" shtick is awful.
CanadianChris Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Adande seems good, although I didn't see yesterday's show. The less of The Bastard on my TV screen, though, the better.
Cheech Tremendous Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Am I missing something here? Why does everyone here hate LeBetard so much? I can think of about 50 ESPN personalities who are worse.
Mik Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 I've always liked LeBetard. He entertains me. Jason Whitlock was far and away the worst. This gets brought up every summer, but man... they've come a long way since the days of Jackie McMullen and Norman Chad.
Guest Smues Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 I have to put up with LeBetard's schtick on PTI and on Kornheiser's radio show, so it's an overload. I'M JUST ASKING THE QUESTION!
Timmy8271 Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 The worst is Jackie Mcmullen. I like Adande/Lebatard. And I especially like Lebatards Schtick. I always get a chuckle out of "BAM". Don't know why.
MFer Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 I've always liked LeBetard. He entertains me. Jason Whitlock was far and away the worst. This gets brought up every summer, but man... they've come a long way since the days of Jackie McMullen and Norman Chad. Does Norman Chad do anything besides poker these days? He used to be a regular on the "Five Good Minutes" segment.
Guest Smues Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 There's a game going on? Who cares the San Diego Chicken just brought us fish tacos! Awesome! Unless Pete Rose is in the suit and Kane comes out to tombstone him this is stupid.
Vern Gagne Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 The Bronx is Burning might be good for a few laughs.
J.B. Buzzkill Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Um, what's the point of this whole "NOW" garbage?
JustJoe2k5 Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Um, what's the point of this whole "NOW" garbage? The past couple of weeks and the next couple of weeks are the "Dead Zone" for sports. Not much else to talk about.
2GOLD Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 His best work was on SportsCenter when it was actually about Sports and not whatever the hell the show has become now. The guy has felt stale and uninterested for the past couple of years so this doesn't come as a surprise. Now I'm trying to think who is left on ESPN from the cool years. Olbermann, he gone from the Big Show (though he does ESPN radio but not for long). Craig Kilborn, who knows what he's doing now. Kenny Mayne, does comedy skits for NFL Countdown but thats it. Charley Steiner is out announcing for the LA Dodgers. Disappointing all the best ones I remember are now going to be gone.
Cheech Tremendous Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 It'll be interesting to see who they get to fill the 1-4 timeslot. I fear that they'll just "promote" Cowshit or Seibel. They seem to love those guys when no one else does. If they were smart they'd pull Kuselias back from that NASCAR show and hand it over to him. He was by far the most entertaining personality outside of Patrick. I wonder how much of this decision was impacted by the Price Is Right thing? How surreal would it be to see Dan F'n Patrick replace Bob Barker?
