Schism was also one of the worst songs off of that album, to me pleasure, since that song as a single didn't thrill me.

 

To be honest this new one sounds a LOT like schism as well. I hope it'll be a good album though, I'm sure to... "get" it. Somehow. If it wows me I'll definitely get it, I have all of TOOL's other stuff.

Yeah, because Tool was just ripping up the music scene in 2002. Lateralus wasn't exactly an industry-shaking event.

It went double platinum, that right there is the definition of mainstream relevance.

 

Yeah, and so did O-Town's self-titled debut.

 

Lateralus took six months to go platinum and a whopping two years to reach its double platinum status. "Schism" was the only top ten modern rock single from the album, and it didn't even crack the Billboard Top 50.

 

I realize that it made No.1 on the Billboard albums list upon its release, but I don't really lend a lot of credence to that, especially considering that the band had half of a decade to build up interest in the release.

 

And, once again, the radio airplay for the album was weaker than it was for Aenima, where "Stinkfist", the title track, and "Forty-Six and 2" made their way into regular rotation.

 

It just doesn't strike me as a landmark release.

you need at least a little bit of irony, some sort of difference between a literal meaning and an implied meaning. almost everything in the lyrics is completely literal, and the "ironic" lines are so easy and cliche that they might as well be literal ("it's no fun till someone dies"). if you want to tell me that i am addicted to violence on tv and you want to be ironic about it, bring it out between the lines somehow. don't just tell me "stare like a junkie into the TV, stare like a zombie," cause then you sound like my mother.

My point was that Tool fans generally hype up the abilities of Adam, Danny, and Justin to the point where you would think they equate Adam with Steve Vai or Jimmy Page, and Justin with Les Claypool or John Myung. Adam and Justin are responsible for the actual feel of the music while Danny - the only truly musically talented member of the band - is responsible for the timing and rhythm of the song. And Adam and Justin are about on the same level as your average underground Japanese thrash band in that they're simplistic players that can play in odd timing. It annoys me that people - a lot of which consider themselves "rock experts" (note: I'm not saying you yourself claimed to be one, I'm talking about the majority of Tool fans I've met) - say they're these incredible musicians when, really, they're no better than half of the bands I listen to (and remember, I'm the "thrash/hardcore" kid of the TSM metalheads, the styles of heavy music that take the least bit of musical talent to play...besides nu-metal and emo, which are jokes in and of themselves, but that's another thread).

 

That's what got me into the tirade about Maynard's lyrics and how he just seems to pick the largest word out of the thesaurus, but hey. I do like Tool, I might see them when they come to the Orpheum in Boston on May 21st, but that depends on who they have as supporting acts. I would be immensely bored if I were to see Tool live (much like how I get incredibly fucking bored when I see Opeth live, but they always seem to have a band I really like touring with them so I always get stuck seeing them).

Their last single, "Schism", was a lengthy progfest that even dedicated modern rock stations flinched at playing with any regularity. Not exactly Top 40 material, or even "46 and 2" or "Sober" or any of Tool's more popular singles. At their peak, Tool catered to a gleefully devoted niche of metal fans, not really bothering with self-promotion other than those kooky music videos - and that peak is long gone.

They are a fine band. I agree with that (I think every post but the pro-Green Jelly/anti-Tool influenced bands one I've made in this thread have said that I like Tool). I just think that the majority of their fanbase needs to shut the fuck up and either LEARN stuff about music or stop getting high and try to listen to the music. Everything sounds better stoned. Am I the only one who still thinks Undertow is Tool's best album? Opiate is cool but as an EP it's hard to really consider it their best album (it's also not representative of their style since). I've never quite gotten the love for Aenima. I just find it a badly produced album that is very muddy sounding and outside of the well known singles there really isn't much there.

 

Lateralus was an album I thought really sucked when I first heard it, but I have since warmed up to it. At first I found it way too long, full of aimless songs that run 8 minutes without doing anything for half of that run time. Of course I also listened to it often around the time of Sept. 11, so maybe that says something about the frame of mind one needs to be in to enjoy Tool.

It's not too bad. I've heard worse. Not their best stuff, but it's definatly listenable and has playback qualities.
