I never truly got the appeal of Shaft despite the fact that I own all three on DVD (Shaft Goes To Africa). There are a few cool scenes in each one and the first one is legit solid movie but they all kind of drag. There isn't nearly enough of the camp and corniness that makes me love blaxploitation. They're basically white detective movies with black people shoehorned in as the leads. And according to Melvin Van Peebles, Shaft was originally going to be with mostly white actors and they just piggybacked on the success of Sweetback and rewrote it to have black actors in the lead.

Across 110th Street might be my favorite blaxploitation film but I almost think that one's too classy to truly qualify as blaxploitation. I really love that movie though and what a killer theme song.

Incidentally, has anybody else checked out the documentary about Melvin Van Peebles, How To Eat Your Watermelon in White Company (And Enjoy It)? Hell of an entertaining movie. I never knew how truly versatile the guy was. BAADASSSSS was also an incredibly fun movie and boasts one of the greatest titles in film history.

Who the hell is Kim Kardashian, and how/why is she famous? I look her up on IMDB, and she's someone who just came out of nowhere to suddenly appear on a whole bunch of talk shows.

That's why she is famous.

I need to watch more 70s exploitation stuff. I'm not a complete virgin in that aspect, I've seen the Coffys and Shafts of the world, but haven't even begun to delve into the more obscure shit.

Well there's your problem right there. Quit going to Blockbuster.

Easier said than done. In Tennessee, most of the other non-chain video stores were going out of business. Here in Texas, I've seen four Blockbusters relatively near my house, but no other video stores whatsoever. Plus, it's just easier, since if you sign up at one Blockbuster you can rent at any one of 'em anywhere in the country, and none of the other stores offer that, you have to sign up separately at each location.

That's why she is famous.

So? There's a million women with great asses. How did this one become famous? Why is she famous? For what reason did she start appearing on all those talk shows? I'd never heard of her either until she showed up at Wrestlemania, and all over the internet it was all "KIM KAR OMG".

For the same reason Paris Hilton became famous. She does have a TV show on E! and I believe some other projects. She's also the girlfriend of NFL player Reggie Bush. I can't explain how or why this particular girl did this but she did. Appearing on talk shows isn't something reserved for the best of the best.

It's all about NetFlix. They have pretty much everything except hardcore porn. It's pretty much down to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video right now in Maine and even some of those are closing. There is one pretty cool independent place downtown but I don't get a chance to go there all that much.

Never heard of her.

She got pissed on by Brandy's little brother Ray-J.

Drip, drip, drip.

So is anyone going to go see Wall-E tomorrow? I'm really excited about it.

Kim Kardashian is famous because either her, or someone behind her (no pun intended) is a great marketer.

She wanted to become famous, and <voila> she's famous. She got some attention for that horrid sex tape, and just kept her name, face, and ass out in the public; the paparazzi picked up on it and it worked out for her. Anyone that's moderately attractive & has the financial means could probably do the same thing.

And re: the blaxploitation genre ... I love bad movies, and cheesy movies, and I'm pretty queer for the movies of the 70s. But I just cannot get into the blaxploitation genre. Seen a few, found 'em all unmemorable, and really have no interest in seeing one again.

Dolemite and The Mack are really about all you need...maybe Superfly. Shaft is a pretty standard cop flick with some blaxploitation mixed in here and there.

I love "Dolemite", and tend to reference it every now and again. FAB press is doing a book about the genre of blaxploitation that looks pretty great (they have yet to do a bad book on movies though.)

For the most part they are all horrible, horrible movies. But I still say MUTHA......FUCKA like Dolemite from time to time.

I've heard (more Brannigan!). It's one of those funny things where I knew it came out in June and the Tuesday that just passed was the last one this month, but I still forgot it came out. A friend even reminded me on Sunday, but then I saw a commercial on TV the other day that finally had it sink in. I'm going to pick it up this evening.

There are a couple things that have been built up since season 1 that are just awesome. And the closing credits are really cool.

"Where's that ol' fuck you Charlie?"

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is a comedy masterpiece, and insanely quotable. Plus, Dennis Hopper vs. Leatherface in a chainsaw battle to the death=non-stop entertainment.

I need to stop making DVD buying trips at Wal-Mart. I go in to get Futurama and leave with Futurama, the Indiana Jones trilogy, and the Naked Gun trilogy. NG was only $15! And it comes in one box! Amazing.

I could defend Shaft a little, but I'm kinda tired. Maybe later.

I went to an indie theater showing of The Warriors tonight. Fuck, that movie gets awesomer every time I see it. There was audible audience anticipation (kinda like the THX deep note) towards the "Warriors, come out to playeeya..." part, and the line was quoted and met with thunderous applause. Had a great time. Baseball Furies 4 life.

There's a film festival in town this weekend and one of the attractions was Kevin Murphy appearing before a viewing of Mystery Science Theater: The Movie last night. The movie was excellent, but Murphy's portion was one of the most grating live things I've ever had to sit through. He barely talked about the show or movie (which, I had assumed, would be the focal point of his entire appearance) and instead spent almost 90 minutes ranting and raving about how screwed up Hollywood is. I ducked out to the lobby near the end and there were actually people complaining to the poor concessions girl about how long Murphy had been talking. Even the ushers were joking with me about how much he was talking. He was apparently supposed to only do 45 minutes but went well over that.

Just an example of one form of humor (TV/movies) not at all translating to another (stand-up comedy).

"Machine Girl"-see this movie now. It could be the "Story of Ricky" of this decade.

I miss the mid-late 90s. It seems like that's when the best of everything came out, from movies to music and whatnot. I know a lot of that is just due to those being my formative years in first discovering the media could be more than just something to mindlessly entertain the masses, but still, stuff just seemed more fun then.
