WCW's greatest matches DVD...

Recommended Posts

I got the idea for this topic from the thread "What DVDs would you like to see the WWE release?". I suggested a WCW DVD focusing on the matches, given that the rise/fall of WCW was pretty much covered on the "Monday night wars" Dvd(that DVD only had 2 matches from Nitro and 2 from RAW!).

So, as the title indicates, what matches would you guys love to see if this DVD was ever released. Please list your matches first(along with dates if possible) and then your extras. Keep in mind that the extras should relate to the matches you've chosen.

It'll be interesting to see which matches come up the most often.

Thank you.

Do we include NWA stuff as well? I'll try to focus on big picture matches that defined WCW.

(I don't know enough prior to this point to fill in pre-89 stuff)

Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat (Clash of the Champions)

Ric Flair vs. Sting (Clash)

Wargames 92

Sting vs. Vader (Superbrawl 3)

Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair (Bash at the Beach 94)

Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair (Halloween Havoc 94)

Sting/Luger/Savage vs. Hall/Nash/??? (Bash at the Beach 96)

Wargames 96

Hulk Hogan vs. Sting (Starrcade 97)

Hulk Hogan vs. Goldberg (Nitro 7/13/98 (?))

Kevin Nash vs. Goldberg (Starrcade 98)

Bret Hart vs. Chris Benoit (Mayhem 99)

Hulk Hogan vs. Jeff Jarrett (Bash at the Beach 2000)

Jeff Jarrett vs. Booker T (Bash at the Beach 2000)

Ric Flair vs. Sting (Final Nitro)

I think that hits most of the ME highlights and lowlights. I wish I could include more stuff about the CW revolution, but that could fill out its own 2-Disc set.

Depends on a couple of things.

1. Is it "Best Of" or a truthful retrospective of the most historically important moments?

2. When do you draw the line at the NWA stopping and WCW beginning?

As long as these guys are included, it's all good.

Terry Funk

Ric Flair

The 4 Horsemen

Dusty Rhodes

Sting

The Great Muta

Barry Wihndam

Magnam T.A.

Doom

The Stiener Bros

The Freebirds

This isn't complete list, just some of the main eventers off the top of the head.

I'd definitely want a Sting/Muta match in there, those guys were pretty revolutionary for American wrestling at the time.

I'd definitely include Pillman/Lyger (first Nitro) and Sting/Flair (final Nitro)

The more Sting, Flair and Vader, the better.

You'd have to do it as, like, at least a three disc set. Maybe something like this:

Disc 1: Best of '85 - '89

Disc 2: Best of '90 - '95

Disc 3: Best of '96 - '01

This would cover from roughly the start of WCW (from after GCW and Mid-Atlantic) to the purchase by Vince McMahon.

I know I'm going to get harshly criticized for this, but what about adding the Luger/Flair cage match at Wrestle War 1990? It's a long time guilty pleasure of mine.

This should also include the three big Flair-Steamboat matches from early '89...from Chi-town Rumble, Clash of Champs, and WrestleWar.

Rick Rude vs. Steamboat...Beach Blast '92-Ironman match.

Rude vs. Flair...Fall Brawl '94 for the NWA/International title

Luger vs. Windham...Great American Bash '91 where Luger became WCW World champ

Luger vs. Sting...Superbrawl II...Sting becomes WCW World champ

Steve Austin vs. Dustin Rhodes...Starrcade '93 when Austin wins US title

Flair vs. Arn Anderson...FallBrawl '94

It's interesting that WCW stuff from the early 90s is often roundly trashed considering some of the fondest memories I have of WCW are from that era.

Here is one no one has mentioned: Ron Simmons vs. Vader from Saturday Night, maybe even throw in the Sting/Jake stuff to explain it.

If it's just from November 1988 until the final Nitro, I'd have these matches:

Steamboat-Flair (Clash 6)

Sting-Muta (GAB '89; I don't know if this is their best match, its the only one of theirs I've seen)

Flair-Funk (Clash 9)

Sting-Flair (GAB '90; Huge moment at the time in WCW history)

Doom-Anderson/Windham (Starrcade '90 Questionable pick, but I think it was a great brawl that should be highlighted)

Sting/Luger-Steiners (Superbrawl I)

Rhodes/Steamboat-Enforcers (Clash XVII)

Pillman-Liger (Superbrawl II)

Sting's Squadron-Dangerous Alliance (Wrestle War '92)

Simmons-Vader (WCW Main Event; Big since it was first black HW Champion)

Sting-Vader (Superbrawl III)

Vader-Flair (Starrcade '93)

Sting/Steamboat-Flair/Austin (WCW Saturday Night; this was a good match, probably not essential, but I think given the names and that it was a rare match, I'd like to see it on there.)

Hogan-Flair (Halloween Havoc '94; I'll skip the Hogan match, since this was the better match.)

Savage-Flair (Starrcade '95; this also is questionable, as it's not their best match, but its short, and its a Flair title win.)

Mysterio-Malenko (GAB '96; to me, this was the 1st great CW match in the CW renaissance.)

Benoit-Sullivan (GAB '96)

Sting/Luger/Savage v. Hall/Nash/Hogan (Bash at the Beach '96)

Mysterio-Guerrero (Halloween Havoc '97)

Sting-Hogan (Starrcade '97; has to be on there.)

DDP-Benoit-Raven (Uncensored '98)

Goldberg-Hogan (Monday Nitro)

Goldberg-Nash (Starrcade '98)

Booker T-Jarrett (Bash at the Beach '99 or '00; I must be getting old I can't remember.)

Booker T-Steiner (Monday Nitro)

Sting-Flair (Monday Nitro)

I don't have enough '99 - '01 matches that stand out to me that the masses would like on DVD.

Granted I'd like to see the Horseman-Flock Spring Stampede and other matches of the sort from various Nitros.

That list is actually a pretty good list. It's missing quite a few things that I would want on there, but overall it'd be a good list of extra matches to go along with a nice documentary. Alot of classics.

Oh yeah, can't believe I forgot to mention Goldberg / Page from Havoc 98. It was actually one of the best main event PPV matches in WCW's history, now THAT was how a world title match was properly booked.

Steiners vs. Nasty Boys Havoc 90 ****

-A rare face in peril match for the Steiners and it's actually incredibly effective. Offense heavy with scary spots.

Express vs. Southern Boys GAB 90 ****

-One of the best comedy matches of all time, tons of fun.

Dustin vs. Arn 92(Date later) ***3/4

-Incredibly smart match with Arn displaying his full range of heel personas while Dustin is his usual great self, watch out for the clever inventive finish. Very low end but so damn smart.

Sting vs. Luger Superbrawl 92 ***1/2-***3/4 range

-Wild big offense heavy sprint with solid character work from Luger, not to mention he takes a release German on his head. Sadly, the last transition seems botched with Luger looking blown out.

Windham/Dustin vs. Zybsko/Austin Superbrawl 92 ****1/4

-Windham and Dustin bring the hate and big bumps, Zybsko seemlessly blends over the top stooging with serious dickery. Austin simply doesn't screw up, though his cheap heel spots near the finish clash with the tone the other three set. Still on of the best US tags ever.

Sting vs. Vader GAB 92 ****

-Often mislabeled a Vader squash from people who probably never seen it, the match is actually a testiment to Vader's ability to carry smaller lesser workers by bumping and selling for them in a credible way. Brutal Powerbomb at the finish though.

Steamboat/Douglas vs. Windham/Pillman Starrcade 92 ***3/4

-Nice long dramatic face in peril with the heels destroying Douglas over and over again.

Windham vs. Scorpio Superbrawl 93 ***1/2-***3/4

-One of the rare U.S. matches where the heel Champion wrestles on a hiearchy as Windham has no problem fending off the lower ranked Scorpio, though he does break away a few times for some nifty high flying. Windham's moveset is endless and the way he gives Scorpio openings and teases comebacks keeps things exciting despite the one sidedness of the match.

Vader vs. Dustin 94 ****

-Just as excellent if not better in some ways than the Sting meetings. Short match but they still manage to cram in almost all their trademark bumps and spots while still telling an effective bully vs. pissed off kid story.
