'X-Men' Storms to Record Opening Weekend

"X-Men: The Last Stand" stormed to an estimated $107 million three-day opening, the largest ever for Memorial Day weekend and the fourth-biggest in box office history.

 

Preliminary estimates were released Sunday for the third installment of the series featuring a cast of mutants with names like Storm (Halle Berry), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn).

 

The 20th Century Fox film opened in 3,690 theaters and grossed a whopping $28,997 per theater.

"People had such a huge awareness of the movie that it just translated into these huge numbers," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

 

The film benefited from a huge base of fans who had seen the first two "X-Men" films, plus great marketing and solid reviews, Dergarabedian said.

 

"This is what the summer is all about," he said, adding the box office has rebounded well since last year's slump. "With `Da Vinci Code' doing better than anticipated ... we could not be in a better position."

 

Estimates for "The Da Vinci Code" over the start of the holiday weekend were not immediately available. That film, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard, had a solid $77 million opener last weekend.

 

On the all-time list, "X-Men: The Last Stand" ranks behind only "Spider-Man," "Star Wars: Episode III" and "Shrek 2" for opening weekend gross. None of the other films opened on a holiday weekend, which usually gives movies a boost.

 

For Memorial Day openers, "X-Men" crushed the previous three-day high of $72 million, set by "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" in 1997.

This is complete bullshit. DVC is doing better than anticipated? Did they think it would do poorly or something? When a book is number 1 on the NYT best sellers list for 3,000 weeks, it is going to kick ass as a movie.

 

And Superman is going to kill X-Men. I think SM has more of a family appeal to it and the first movie in a franchise usually makes more than the sequels. LOTR, Shrek, Matrix (Well the 2nd one did better, but the third one dropped mostly because people realized the franchise sucked and all), and MI are the few that the sequels did better.

EDIT: After going through The-Numbers.com some more, I see that it's about 60-40 when it comes to the first movie making more than the sequel. SM is still going to out gross X-Men.

I dunno if X-Men will fall off too fast. At my showing on Friday morning it was a packed house, but the crowd was mixed with all age ranges and types, it wasn't the typical opening day "geek" crowd that you usually see.

The 80 million opening for DaVinci was at the high end of expectations, so the movie is doing better then expected.

 

There are also tons of sequels that outgrossed the original as you said. X2, Meet the Fockers, Rush Hour 2, Austin Powers 2 and 3, Ice Age 2, Toy Story 2 among others.

The movie only dropped 44.8% from opening weekend totals, which is really great numbers for your traditional slasher flick. Most drop 55%-60% the second weekend. This brings the movie's total gross to $8,493,000 after 10 Days in release. The movie is now making WWE and Lions Gate a profit and has not yet been released on any international screens yet.

Even Whedon's current arc isn't as good as his initial one. I'm pretty much just reading that plus secondary titles New X-Men, Son of M and X-Factor.

I know I should not feel this way, because although in a sense it's good news for Glen Jacobs, this may inspire the WWE to commit money and resources to making more horrible movies. But "mainstream" America doesn't read comics. Superman is more of a household name than X-Men. Just like Spiderman did better than X-Men, I see Superman doing the same. It will be the #1 movie of the year, unless some huge blockbuster is coming out this winter that I am no aware of.
