With the bases loaded, a grounder to 3rd allowed Milledge to score, but more importantly Jose Reyes just scored from 2nd on a play at the plate that rolled a few feet away.

9-4 now.

The Astros won again. 9-2. Chris Burke is a friggin' machine. Something like 4-4 with a BB and 5 runs scored. He hit a homerun, too. Unfortunately, there's a chance that his shoulder could dislocate at any given time. It looks like for the foreseeable future Willy Taveras is going to be a pinch runner/late inning defensive guy. Andy Pettitte finally had a good start. I'm glad the 'Stros are playing well, but I'm worried for a couple weeks from now when the whole team goes into a slump.

D-Backs release Russ Oritz today, eating the last $22 million owed on his contract. One of those signings where literally everyone knew it was a bad idea except the team signing him.

The Ortiz signing is an example of a GM simply looking at a pitcher's win/loss record and not going deeper with peripheral stats. Just lazy management

Isn't he still hitting below .200 with RISP, though? However, he's obviously more clutch than A-Rod.

.148, with a .360 OBP and .500 slugging percentage. Of course it's just 54 at bats, which doesn't really mean much. The point is he came up in a big situation and came up huge.

Yeah, I was watching the game when the announcers were talking about how he's hitting below .200 with RISP, but I thought it was a misleading stat...mainly due to his being pitched around and the low sample size. But, like the announcers were also saying, when he goes up to bat, the fielders could just go take a break or something. He's either gonna strike out, walk, or get a massive homerun. Also, I must say, that was an unexpectedly well pitched game from Villeneuva and Ramirez.

So what happened to the "Adam Dunn isn't clutch" crowd?

I was going to post the same thing, but the board was having some issues earlier.

What was the point of getting Phil Nevin if it means Dusty's going to bench Todd Walker every time Nevin starts? I thought the point was to get some potential power; not find a way to get Neifi Perez and Tony Womack more starts at second.

Randy Johnson just got thrown out after drilling the batter after Posada got hit and overreacted earlier. Of course, John Kruk endorses it.

And the Cubs should probably trade Maddux while he's still got some value left. He's looked awful since May.

Fun stat: the Blue Jays are 27th in the majors in IP by starters. And they have a starter who's pitched into the ninth inning four times. Take Halladay out, and this team is only ahead of the Royals.

The trend continues tonight, as Scott Downs went only two innings.

Lets see if the Cubs want to trade with the Os again..reunite Maddux with Mazzone. I dont know who the Os would have to offer for him though.

What would the Os gain by trading a young guy for a pitcher with only a year or two left at best? They're not going anywhere this year. Maddux would get shelled in the AL at this point in his career anyway.

Somebody slow down the Marlins. They've quietly gone from worst record in all of baseball to just about passing a few teams.

Amazing.

I'm telling you - as soon as next year.

The Os could use a veteran like Maddux to help out the young guys in the rotation Bedard/Loewen/Penn

and he's gotta be miles better than Bruce Chen/Rodrigo Lopez.

Maddux won't do shit for the Orioles. They're basically out of it this year too.

They're soon to be 30-37 but only either 8 or 9 back. I dont have much confidence in them bucking the trend of lousy 2nd halves, but they aren't out of it completely.

Well it's obvious that he doesn't know anything about it.

It's not the fact that they passed them, Kotz. It's the fact that their 21-24 year old players who should realistically still be in AA are not only adapting to the major leagues but excelling.

Stick to college football and aging Australian pop singers.

The Orioles should consider trying to pick up Russ Ortiz and reunite him with Mazzone. He had 2 really good years with Atlanta..

The Os are getting beat again by the Jays.

Russ needs to drop the 100 pounds he gained after signing that fat contract first.

4 in a row. 5 of 6. 14 of 20.

Go Marlins. One of the hottest teams in baseball.

Before the season everyone was so quick to talk about how "truly awful" the Marlins were. Truly awful teams (like the Royals) NEVER have runs like these.
