How can you pick Renaldo Balkman when you have fucking Marcus Williams, fucking Kyle Lowry, and fucking Shannon Brown on the board? I don't give a shit if we have 20 guards, you always pick talent over need. We ended picking up another guard anyway in Mardy Collins (nice pick), but still would've preferred one of the three mentioned above, and someone else at 29.

 

Isiah's reasoning was that Phoenix was going to pick him. He says that once Balkman was picked, Phoenix traded out because that's who they wanted. Yet, the Arizona Republic says Phoenix wanted out of the first round after Carney was picked. Isiah better be telling the truth on this, although it's pretty doubtful. Balkman was a 2nd round pick at best in most if not all boards.

 

I liked the Mardy Collins picked because he can defend three positions, and can play some point, but I still would have preferred Brown, Williams, or Lowry. It's disappointing.

 

 

The suns were going to take him at 27, so the Knicks weren't going to get him. From what I have heard of the guy, he is like a Shawn Marion Lite without the offense. Great on the boards and a great defender of 4 postitions. Mardy Collins, they were going to take him anyway, and he is 6'6" and can defend 3 and sometimes 4 positions. So I actually say Isaiah did a good job last night. But thats not a suprise. The guy should be a scout...not a GM or a Coach, but a scout. So yeah, as always he made great pick in the draft.

 

You know, Marcus Williams is a really good player when he has good wing players(something the Knicks don't have). Plus, they have arguably 4 point guards on the roster. Marcus Williams would have been a horrible fucking pick for the Knicks, which is why I said last night that we were one Knick pick away from the Suns getting a shot at him, because Isaiah is too good of a draft guy.

 

They suns wanted either Thabo Sefolosha, Carney, Sene, Renaldo Balkman or Hilton Armstrong(the "5 Guys" that D'Antoni said were off the board last night). The two guys that Isaiah picked last night are the best fit for the Knicks, unless you want to argue that Josh Boone would have been a better pick(which I wouldn't).

 

And once again, people keep saying Portland didn't have to make some of the moves they made, they got rid of one of their many SF's(although they took on Raef's contract they got rid of Ratliffs) and the money they will have to pay Spanish Chocolate(honestly...that is a horrible nickname) isn't that much and gave them another pick in the draft.

You know what's sad about that Balkman pick? If he'd been a guy who had been signed as a free agent with no hype by the Knicks he could be a decent journeyman for them. He still might be, but I'm amazed anyone would use a 1st round pick on Balkman. There's a difference between "decent journeyman" and "1st rounder."

I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it.

I'm glad that there is at least some confirmation that Phoenix wasn't taking him because I didn't buy that story for a second. Let's see, here's a player who is so far off the radar that he isn't listed in the media guide, can't be found on any mock draft, or mentioned in any columns or internet rumor sites, but got so hot on draft night that Isiah had to rush to pick him and Phoenix decided there was no one even worth looking at after he was off the board? Bullshit.

mike d'antoni is full of it. just last week he was talking about a sleeper pick they had in mind, then they tried to trade one of their first rounders for a second rounder and cash. they know full well they were looking at that kid.

 

In the case of Isaiah, you still take the guy you want with your pick anyway. Not like anyone in this draft was going to save next season anyway.

It didn't look like any of the announcers heard a thing... which ended up making this guy look pretty pathetic for keeping that up all night.

I guess any of the three guards would have been fine if Isiah was looking to trade some of the guards we already have. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen, so maybe it was the best pick. I like what I see from the highlights they've shown, and Isiah does have good history with picking players, so lets see what happens.

 

Oh and since Parcells, the Jets have been alright at the draft.

One thing I will say...people booed the Damon Stoudamire pick when it happened, as well, and all he did was win the ROTY award. I certainly don't think Balkman will be ROTY, but I'm willing to wait and see what he's got this season, because for all his faults, Isiah does have a good draft history.

Don't ask me why but I just have a hunch Balkman will be a solid pro. Maybe not a 1st round pick level career, but a solid journeyman. Hell, he was the one guy on South Carolina over the past 3 or so years that made any impression on me.

 

Of course, he'll likely be a decent player for someone besides the Knicks.
