Open the Muggy Gate Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Hey New York, how do you feel about your 20th pick? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qjyt1Vm9YM...rch=NBA%20Draft
CanadianChris Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 That's beautiful. I would love to see an 8-74 season. It could happen. Isiah's our man.
Guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 If Portland were in a different division, I seriously think they would win less than 15 games.
Ripper Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 How can you pick Renaldo Balkman when you have fucking Marcus Williams, fucking Kyle Lowry, and fucking Shannon Brown on the board? I don't give a shit if we have 20 guards, you always pick talent over need. We ended picking up another guard anyway in Mardy Collins (nice pick), but still would've preferred one of the three mentioned above, and someone else at 29. Isiah's reasoning was that Phoenix was going to pick him. He says that once Balkman was picked, Phoenix traded out because that's who they wanted. Yet, the Arizona Republic says Phoenix wanted out of the first round after Carney was picked. Isiah better be telling the truth on this, although it's pretty doubtful. Balkman was a 2nd round pick at best in most if not all boards. I liked the Mardy Collins picked because he can defend three positions, and can play some point, but I still would have preferred Brown, Williams, or Lowry. It's disappointing. The suns were going to take him at 27, so the Knicks weren't going to get him. From what I have heard of the guy, he is like a Shawn Marion Lite without the offense. Great on the boards and a great defender of 4 postitions. Mardy Collins, they were going to take him anyway, and he is 6'6" and can defend 3 and sometimes 4 positions. So I actually say Isaiah did a good job last night. But thats not a suprise. The guy should be a scout...not a GM or a Coach, but a scout. So yeah, as always he made great pick in the draft. You know, Marcus Williams is a really good player when he has good wing players(something the Knicks don't have). Plus, they have arguably 4 point guards on the roster. Marcus Williams would have been a horrible fucking pick for the Knicks, which is why I said last night that we were one Knick pick away from the Suns getting a shot at him, because Isaiah is too good of a draft guy. They suns wanted either Thabo Sefolosha, Carney, Sene, Renaldo Balkman or Hilton Armstrong(the "5 Guys" that D'Antoni said were off the board last night). The two guys that Isaiah picked last night are the best fit for the Knicks, unless you want to argue that Josh Boone would have been a better pick(which I wouldn't). And once again, people keep saying Portland didn't have to make some of the moves they made, they got rid of one of their many SF's(although they took on Raef's contract they got rid of Ratliffs) and the money they will have to pay Spanish Chocolate(honestly...that is a horrible nickname) isn't that much and gave them another pick in the draft.
Open the Muggy Gate Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 I thought the best part of that video was... "We have a trade."
Conspiracy_Victim Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Hey New York, how do you feel about your 20th pick? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qjyt1Vm9YM...rch=NBA%20Draft "With the 20th pick in the 2006 NBA draft, the New York Knicks select Ronaldo-" "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Absolutely beautiful. I seriously think Stern was setting them up with the trade announcement just to build them up before the pick.
naiwf Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 I think the Knicks have now surpassed the Jets as the worst NY team when it comes to the draft.
cabbageboy Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 You know what's sad about that Balkman pick? If he'd been a guy who had been signed as a free agent with no hype by the Knicks he could be a decent journeyman for them. He still might be, but I'm amazed anyone would use a 1st round pick on Balkman. There's a difference between "decent journeyman" and "1st rounder."
UZI Suicide Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Bill Simmons rules. Tony Bennett reports that Minnesota and Portland are swapping draft picks -- Roy to Portland, Foye to Minnesota. That's it? That's the trade? None of the ESPN guys seem remotely fazed. I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it. 9:36 -- There are those moments in sports when you expect something great, and then it actually happens. And then there are those rare moments in sports when you expect something great, and something even greater happens. This was one of those moments: The Knicks on the clock, the crowd pushing for Marcus Williams, and then ... --Stern: "With the 20th pick, the New York Knicks select ... Renaldo Balkman." (Crowd explodes in horror.) --Stern (over the boos): "Renaldo is not here." --Patrick (without missing a beat): "And it's probably a good thing."
Just John Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 That was rather funny, but I wonder how much the announcers actually heard. If they heard most of that, every single one of them must be inhuman not to laugh just a little.
Guest Smues Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 That video was great on so many levels. CHEESE DOODLES!!
Guest Vitamin X Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 QUITE FRANKLY THESE ARE THE BEST CHEETOS I'VE EVER HAD

He puts his head in his hands and starts sobbing hysterically as his entourage congratulates him. It's about time we had some emotion tonight, dammit. Ager walks up to the stage in a triple-breasted, oversized beige suit, goes to shake hands with Stern and immediately gets whistled for a foul on Dwyane Wade.

alfdogg Posted June 30, 2006 Author Report Posted June 30, 2006 "On draft night, Thomas said he took Balkman early because he was sure he would be gone when the Knicks selected again at No. 29 (they did not have a second-round pick). According to Thomas, the Phoenix Suns were set to draft Balkman with one of their two picks, at 21 or 27. "That's funny," Mike D'Antoni, the Suns' president and coach, told a Phoenix radio station. "He wasn't even on our radar." New York Times "When Isiah Thomas defended his decision to nab defensive South Carolina small-forward defensive specialist Renaldo Balkman at 20 instead of waiting for 29, he said his "due diligence" discovered the Suns were going to take him at either 21 or 27. Sherlock Holmes, Isiah is not. Three sources, including one inside the Suns organization, told The Post yesterday Phoenix was not taking Balkman in the first round and that's not why they traded their picks. One league source who spoke to a Suns official said if Balkman was available at 45, they would have passed." New York Post "One South Carolina source said Balkman, who came off the bench 12 times and has no offensive game whatsoever, thought the Knicks could be interested at 29 but not 20. Balkman was not included in the draft media guide that lists 100 players. The Suns may not have taken Balkman if there was a third round." New York Post
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 I'm glad that there is at least some confirmation that Phoenix wasn't taking him because I didn't buy that story for a second. Let's see, here's a player who is so far off the radar that he isn't listed in the media guide, can't be found on any mock draft, or mentioned in any columns or internet rumor sites, but got so hot on draft night that Isiah had to rush to pick him and Phoenix decided there was no one even worth looking at after he was off the board? Bullshit.
Ripper Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 mike d'antoni is full of it. just last week he was talking about a sleeper pick they had in mind, then they tried to trade one of their first rounders for a second rounder and cash. they know full well they were looking at that kid. In the case of Isaiah, you still take the guy you want with your pick anyway. Not like anyone in this draft was going to save next season anyway.
Guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 he said his "due diligence" discovered the Suns were going to take him at either 21 or 27. Sherlock Holmes, Isiah is not. That's just too funny.

Brett Favre Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 I guess any of the three guards would have been fine if Isiah was looking to trade some of the guards we already have. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen, so maybe it was the best pick. I like what I see from the highlights they've shown, and Isiah does have good history with picking players, so lets see what happens. Oh and since Parcells, the Jets have been alright at the draft.
alfdogg Posted July 1, 2006 Author Report Posted July 1, 2006 One thing I will say...people booed the Damon Stoudamire pick when it happened, as well, and all he did was win the ROTY award. I certainly don't think Balkman will be ROTY, but I'm willing to wait and see what he's got this season, because for all his faults, Isiah does have a good draft history.
bob_barron Posted July 1, 2006 Report Posted July 1, 2006 Stephen A. Smith said the exact same thing. But even so, it sounds like they didn't have to draft him at #20.
cabbageboy Posted July 1, 2006 Report Posted July 1, 2006 Don't ask me why but I just have a hunch Balkman will be a solid pro. Maybe not a 1st round pick level career, but a solid journeyman. Hell, he was the one guy on South Carolina over the past 3 or so years that made any impression on me. Of course, he'll likely be a decent player for someone besides the Knicks.
