Mayfair? Put It On The Card

Monopoly board game players can now pay for properties with debit cards.

Game makers Parker have phased out the standard multi-coloured cash in a new version.

Players will instead use a Visa mock debit card to keep track of how much they win or lose.

It is inserted into an electronic machine where the banker taps in cardholders' earnings and payments.

Parker said replacing of cash with plastic showed the game was moving with the times.

Spokesman Chris Weatherhead said: "The new electronic Monopoly reflects the changing nature of society and the advancement of technology."

The new version follows a YouGov survey of 2,056 adults which showed 70% used cash less often than they did a decade ago.

It is part of an international deal between Parker and finance giant Visa, which designed the mock debit card and its electronic machine.

Monopoly Here and Now Electronic Banking costs around £24.99, compared to £12.99 for the standard "cash" version

I didn't get the "Mayfair" part of it, but then realized that Monopoly UK probably has different sections. Here's the link.

Despite living in the U.S. since I was 3 I grew up with the English version with Mayfair in place of Boardwalk.

I'm pretty sure the new Monopoly is going to have all the spaces renamed to real locations, and Times Square is going to be the new Boardwalk. They had an online vote a few months ago with landmarks from cities all over the U.S. The winning landmark would become Boardwalk and the rest would be distributed around the rest of the board.

There's like 10,000 versions of monopoly already, I don't think adding this one is bad. I'm sure classic monopoly will still be available, and I doubt they'll realize debit card version of the 10 million licensed versions of Monopoly like Star Wars Monopoly, Peanuts Monopoly, every college and pro team monopoly, etc.

This will be good for making the concept of money even more abstract and unrealistic for kids.

"I want to buy that! I'll just put it on my credit card!"

yeah i don't think regular monopoly is being discontinued or anything, this is just for people who want to play with credit cards, i don't get why people overreact with this ruining our childhood nonsense.

And yet I figured that was exactly the response this was going to get, too.

I've played more versions of Monopoly then any other game, board game or otherwise.

Star Wars was cool. But if you're playing with somebody that doesn't know alot about the movies and they're lost.

Everything in the game is changed to complex-ass rules with everything being something crazy from the Star Wars universe.

I'll say good for Monopoly. That game is long enough without taking all the time to make change, especially when someone wants to cash in all their $1s and $5s. Then again, I'm not a huge Monopoly fan to begin with.

Why haven't they upgraded good games like Scattergories? I still have my original one from the late 80's and I brought one recently and despite the cosmetic changes, everything else was the same.

Because, if I remember correctly, not even counting the Licensed Properties Monopoly, the original Monopoly, in it's myriad forms, holds the record for the most board games sold worldwide.
