You do realize you're proving the point that GG's are a useless measuring stick of defensive ability. You and CW have a similar level of reading comprehension so it doesn't surprise me that you both can't comprehend that Abreu's lack of hustle in the outfield is a problem. The guy will not go hard for a ball if it's anywhere near the wall and when you play on the same team as Jeter who nearly crippled himself for a foul ball in a "meaningless" regular season game (albeit against Boston), it's only a matter of time before Abreu pulling up 20 feet short gets him booed by the Yankee Stadium "faithful". Abreu's nonchalant style couldn't play in Philly, what makes you think it'll work in the Bronx?

The Astros are about to beat the Padres again to move to within 4 of the Wildcard. 37-18 will get 'em 88 wins, which should equal Wildcard. 85 might even do it the way all the teams are bunched up together. If Matt Albers pitches tomorrow as well as he did when he tossed 5 shutout innings of relief against the Reds and Kingofthe909 holds up his end of the bargain by having the Dodgers beat the Reds, we'll be 3 games back going into this weekend against the D-Backs.

During the Cardinals/Phillies radio broadcast on Tuesday, one of the Cards' broadcasters referred to Chris Coste as a young player. At the time, Coste was the oldest player on the field! In fact, Coste is the second oldest position player on the club (only Mike Lieberthal is older).

 

Also a fun note from the Phils' broadcast last night, the five shortest players in MLB are all Cardinals or Phillies (David Eckstein, Ron Belliard, Aaron Miles, Jimmy Rollins, Fabio Castro).

I know most people will say his gold glove was undeserved, but you can't win a gold glove if you're as awful in the outfield as people are making him sound.

Moving on..what happened with Chase Utley's hit? I'm glad that it's a hit a though.

 

Utley hit a chopper to the right of the pitcher's mound and Flores had to reach for it tohave a chance on it. Once he snagged it, Flores made a motion to make sure that the runner held on third, then planted and threw a strike to Pujols, but Utley beat it out. It was originally ruled an "attempted fielder's choice" or something like that but, after replays, the official scorer realized that Flores would have had to make an exceptional play to get Utley (who was really hustling up the line) anyway, regardless of the motion that he made to third to hold the runner. The FSN Midwest crew for the Cardinals felt that it should have been ruled a hit and I would agree - it's a good thing that they fixed the call.

Mateo's really an underrated prospect. He had a fantastic year in the Florida State League last year. St. Louis took him in the Rule V draft but gave him back. The only concern I have is that it may be early yet for him.

He's back in AAA and I guess doing better than Jerome Williams (remember HIM?). Anyway, Marmol's all over the damn place today and is getting beat down early. With this going on, a rookie making his debut in Game 2 and Gascan Glendon back to the DL, the Cubs are probably going to need Neifi to pitch at some point today.

 

And while it's to no surprise, Kerry Wood's officially done for the season. That was 13 million bananas well spent. He stated yesterday he'll be a reliever when he returns in 2007.

Oh and I guess the reason Angel Guzman wasn't considered to start Game 2, was because Iowa (the Cubs' AAA team) was in Vegas and thus, there wasn't enough time for him to get back to Chicago. Mind you, this was 48 hours ago when they knew they'd need someone to start. Apparently all Cubs minor league travel is done via pogo stick.

And the ironies of ironies is despite a six-run difference, Juan Cruz threw more pitches in as many innings as Marmol and is done for the day. If the Cubs could hit worth a damn with RISP, this would be a game. Seven men left on in the last three innings. Hilarious that Jim Hendry dismisses OBP and states hitting with RISP being the most important stat and then the team he put together has no clue how to do that.

Grace to me is your typical homer announcer. He's my worst kind of announcer (ala Michael Kay) in that won't criticize his own team but is never shy of blasting the opposing team. After Pedro dared to hit "class act" Luis Gonzalez he started hurling insults and then laughed when he (Pedro) lost his no-hiiter.
