Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 Most of the local stuff around here is pretty shitty, here being Toronto. Typical rock radio crap, or top 40, etc. So I did some searching online for anything better, and came across http://www.kexp.org/ which is not bad, an indie radio station based out of the Washington area. I'm getting the general feel that most of the ones that will be listed are ones that aren't local, but we'll see. It would be cool to find some new stuff, so I'm interested in what will be said. So what do you listen to?
Special K 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 Small World. All I listen to is KEXP. I live in Seattle, which is where it's based out of. It used to be the UW radio station KCMU, now It's affiliated with the Experience Music Project, so I assume Paul Allen bought it. They have excellent hip-hop shows, have exposed me to some obscure bands that I now love like Blonde Redhead, Sleater-Kinney.(they played a Blonde Redhead song and I immediately bought their album). The only thing I don't dig is some of the World Pop music, though you'll get some gems like Hedningarna and Sigur Ros or however you spell it. I used to listen to 107.7 the End back in the good old days, and even recently, until they changed producers. Now all they play is Panic at the Disco and Angels and Airwaves and Coheed and Cambria and all that horrible shite. (have you heard the new Coheed and Cambria song? it sounds like it should be on the warm station next to 'From a Distance' or 'I Hope you Dance') Nonetheless, the end still has an excellent lunch hour, and some really good specialty shows, like their punk show Gabba Gabba Hey (which I think you can stream at any time)
MrRant 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 Occasionally 99.9 or 102.5. KISW though is starting to suck with the Men's Room and all the other bullshit.
Darthtiki 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 Are we talking AM or FM In Sacramento: KRXQ (Hard rock), KWOD (Alternative) if I'm feeling massochistic I'll hit KDND (Top 40) In Los Angeles: KROQ....frankly there is nothing beyond
Star Ocean 3 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 KROQ is only ok at noon, or at night, when they have Rodney on Sundays or that after hours remix stuff the rest of the time. What about Indie 103.1? I tried them but the reception is too bad for my broken car radio. KCSN is the best classical station because they actually play modern music, instead of the same slosh you can hear anywhere. Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2006 WBCN in the morning for Opie & Anthony (they've fucking grown on me, and Jimmy Norton is the man), and then randomly BCN throughout the day when I'm in the warehouse and not on the road. When I am on the road, it's my mp3 player on shuffle. It's fun listening to Zombie Apocalypse followed by Scatman John and then Frank Zappa with the fourth horsemen being Gorerotted. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 XM Presets on the ol' Roady XT First Set - Music 1 Flight 26 (Modern Hits) 2 Lucy (Alternative Hits) 3 Fred (Classic Alternative) 4 Ethel (New Alternative) 5 XM Hitlist (Todays Hit Music) 6 20 on 20 (Top 20) 7 Squizz (New Hard Rock) 8 80s on 8 9 90s on 9 0 Big Tracks (Later Classic Rock) I dont listen to anything on the Clear Channel Stations out of princple. I dont know why I have 20 on 20 since 90% of the time Its not anything I like. Second Set - Comedy/Sports 1 High Voltage (O&A, Ron and Fez) 2 XM Comedy 150 (Uncensored Comedy) 3 Laugh USA (Comedy) 4 Laugh Attack (A Lame Uncensored Comedy Channel for Canadians) 5 Fox Sports Radio 6 Sporting News Radio 7 ESPN Radio 8 Home Plate 9 Talk Radio 165 (mainly for Coast to Coast AM) 0 Oprah and Friends..er..just kidding I hardly bother with the sports channels anymore though. At work I end up listening to a channel called "the B". The morning show with Jeff Farrow (local only) is passable and somewhat funny (I miss O&A though), but I wish I could get permission to hook up my XM even if I know I wouldnt be able to listen to O&A. Id have to buy a $100 personal repeater to get a signal in the kitchen but Id do it in a heartbeat to avoid the repetiveness of crappy FM Radio.

Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 I don't know much about XM, from what I understand it's great quality but still the same shitty stuff you get on regular radio. What principle do you avoid Clear Channel on?
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 I don't know much about XM, from what I understand it's great quality but still the same shitty stuff you get on regular radio. What principle do you avoid Clear Channel on? Clear Channel runs a couple stations (Nashville!, KISS, Sunny, MIX) on XM and they air fucking commercials. I didnt get Sat Radio to hear commercials on the music channels.
The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 luckily it's rarely that i listen to those four channels. But I hear commercials on channels like 150 and 202, but they aren't very common, so it's not a big deal. As far as "same shitty stuff", it really depends on the channel. That's why the System and Audio Visions inhabit my dial. I also did the jazz and blues channels.

Still, I listen to KEXP about 85% of the time and I too stopped listening to 107.7 except for on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings at just about the moment they put the Adam Carolla show on in the mornings and started playing mostly bands that sound like Fall Out Boy. Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted August 14, 2006 KRBZ: The Alternative, Kansas City Basically alternative rock, but without Papa Roach, Nickleback, Staind, and that crap. But there's a variety of good current music there too. The current top 10 for 2006 on KRBZ- Gold Lion, Tear You Apart, Crooked Teeth, All These Things, Steady as She Goes, Upside Down, Dani California, Every Day is Exactly the Same, Perfect Situation, Feel Good Inc I used to listen to 107.7 the End back in the good old days, and even recently, until they changed producers. Now all they play is Panic at the Disco and Angels and Airwaves and Coheed and Cambria and all that horrible shite. The End's program director (Lazlo) is the former program director for KRBZ. PATD isn't being overplayed because of Lazlo, it's being overplayed because it's absurdly popular. It's not like he's going mad with power and playing Billy Bragg, Iron & Wine, Morrissey B-sides, and Bob Mould. For all we know, he's probably cranked up the spins for Band of Horses too And for reference to the Seattleans, his top 10 albums of CD #1: FOO FIGHTERS - In Your Honor Such a good record you don't need to listen to the second disc. Actually I suggest you don't. #2: DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE - Plans Smart. Thoughtful. Passionate. #3: NADA SURF - The Weight Is A Gift Smart. Thoughtful. Passionate. #4: AGAINST ME! - Searching For A Former Clarity Smart. Thoughtful. Pissed. #5: JACK JOHNSON - In Between Dreams This guy just writes great songs. Are they simple? Perhaps. I hate hippies and I like this record. #6: MOBY - Hotel This record not being bigger almost made me lose faith in the world. Why people don't appreciate this guy is beyond me. I hate techno and love this record. #7: COLDPLAY - X & Y You say you hate them. You don't. #8: JACK'S MANNEQUIN - Everything In Transit " I'll look for work today I'm spilling out the door Put my glasses on So no one sees me I never thought that I'd be living on your floor But the rents are high And LA's easy" #9: WEEZER - Make Believe It just felt good with the windows down and the volume up. #10: RISE AGAINST - Siren Song Of The Counter Culture Smart. Passionate. Pissed off. And yeah, have the Jack Johnson spins went up in Seattle too?
