The Beer Thread.

Recommended Posts

Guest Vitamin X

I've got work in about 12 hours or so, and I hate sleeping pills, and I don't have any bud. I need something good to drink quickly that'll go down well with popcorn and a movie, and that'll knock me out.

Liquor store closes at 2am for fancier beers, but there's a couple gas stations around here that disregard the whole last call rule and just sell alcohol whenever.

If I don't get any responses, I'll probably just opt for a 32 oz (damn you Florida why do you hate 40's) of Heineken. I'm sure I can't possibly be the only person here who drinks if they need to go to sleep sometimes, am I?

I used a jug of cheap wine to knock me out. Did the trick, although I needed a lot of coffee and water the next day.

At the moment, I am using a 40oz Heineken to knock myself out. Slow night. And I donated blood earlier, so I should be ok.

I haven't drank since New Year's Eve.

I was startin' to like it too much, so I quit.

But yeah, take this entire thread's advice.

Eat a turkey sandwich, drink a glasss of water, smoke a joint while you enjoy a beer or two.

Or my personal choice, a good old 40 oz.

I'm resurrecting this thread as "Beer Thread late 2007", particularly because of this very intelligent quote I found while perusing this thread.

... Yeah. Anyways, so I was at the Oregon Brewers' Festival 2007 today and it was pretty fun. Lots of lines, and beer. 72 craft breweries from Portland and everywhere else in the country. And I mean, a lot of waiting, to get in was about a half hour, then another 15-20 to get "tokens" (you had to give these to the brewers to get the beer) and a mug. After that though, it was all gravy.

I went with a friend of mine, who's originally from a Chicago suburb called Vernon Hills. After getting a couple pints (Watermelon Wheat courtesy of 21st Amendment in San Francisco, and a double IPA from some local place, I forget the name) we started talking in Wisconsin accents, especially when we got in line for this bock from Milwaukee. Our plan was basically, fill up the mug, then go wait in another line and drink while in line, finishing it before getting to the front, then re-fill and repeat. I think we also had an Imperial Porter from Rogue Ales (probably the best one I had). We lost count after that. People kept randomly raising up huge cheers for no apparent reason, other than apparently that everyone was drunk.

I mean, it was like those crappy outdoor festivals but without any of those silly overtones that you're there for anything other than being drunk and dirty in the hot baking sun and raising a ruckus.

I still have a ton of tokens left over, so I'm going to hit it up tomorrow again. I <3 beer.

Day 2: Oregon Brewers' Festival 2007.

I bought a wooden beer stein. It looks fucking tight, and it's made out of oak. Had myself two pints of Raspberry Wheat (only fruity beer I've really enjoyed thus far, courtesy of Raccoon Lodge), a pint of Anderson Valley Double IPA, and some other wheat oir IPA shit. They ran out of stouts and porters, and I found it kind of ridiculous how big people in the Pacific NW are on IPAs and other similar hoppy as fuck light beers. Is this the same everywhere else?

I joined the Oregon SNOB (supporters of native Oregon beers) thing in the meantime, and got a cool t-shirt and bumper sticker! Although, since I don't really drive my car anymore, I just put it on my messenger bag. These brewers' festivals are dangerous. I'm really drunk right now. It would be a great time to call me! (**Not anymore!**). Do it before my number's gone when I'm sober! I'm going to race a kid's bike downhill at breakneck speeds (it's what I do every week for fun!) in about an hour or so, so do it quick.

You descended into a Pacific Northwest Liberal caricature at a rapid clip, VX. Not that eschewing automobile transit is bad, by any means. The messenger bag part just made me smile.

Hey, what can I say? I fit in well.

EDIT: I've had my messenger bag since way before I moved up here.

If I'm envious of one thing about the Pac North-West it's the beer. We get very few of your microbreweries up here in Canada but what I've tried has been quality stuff.

Funny that VX mentioned fruit-based beers as there's been an apricot wheat ale that St. Ambroise does up here I've been thinking about trying.

Anyone drink beer that was quite a few months after its expiration date? Maybe it was because I drank a couple that bookended a few fresh beers for a total of 4 or 5 beers on the night within a 6 hour time frame, but I did that recently and ended up with nasty, real nasty hangovers the day later, one that included a mild offering to the procelin God.

Should this be a normal reaction? I found one barely drinkable, handed it to someonelse who told me that it was fine and drank the rest of it. Or it could be because the guy has been drinking beers of varying degrees of taste for over 45, nearly 50 years now that he doesn't have a discerning feel for when a beer has gone bad or whatnot.

I only got some new information about brewing it this weekend at the festival. What are you going to attempt?

I need about 12 beers after the weekend from Hell i had. Anything that could did indeed go wrong.

Broke up with the girl, car died, CPU chair fell apart, wallet lost, credit card company refusing to refund me alomst 1500 bucks on a bullshit charge. And more shit I can't recall I think.

BULL SHIT

BULL SHIT!!

I haven't decided yet. I have a whole book of formulas to try. I am traditionally an IPA drinker, but that seems like a recipe for disaster for my first go round.

Actually, I disagree. If anything, you can only go wrong by not having enough hops in an IPA. They were meant to be sturdy, originally.

Do you have a kit already or are you looking for an extract recipe?

I think VX is pretty much right as far as an IPA being a pretty easy brew to get right. The rule of thumb is that darker beers or beers with bigger flavors are easier to do because there's more there to hide any off-flavors that might develop. A porter or a nut brown ale would also be a good choice.

I'm guessing that would mean that he would be able to have a much sharper taste as to whether or not a beer has gone bad, as he's developed a pretty mean palette.

Yeah that also makes sense. Still don't know why I had a killer hangover though

Try me. The other night I puked so hard I've had a sore throat for the past three days due to the damage it did to my esophagus.

And I still went out and had a couple last night as well, and now functioning on 3 hours of sleep. Lagunitas makes a fine pilsner!

I'm not trying to outdo anyone, I'm just saying I had a couple of really, really not so fresh beers that bookended a couple of fresh ones and resulted in a lousy day the next day.

Palate, though maybe he's also an experienced painter as well.

Steel Reserve, lacking that an Ice beer to knock yourself out.

Oh my, I've actually had Steel Reserve before. Bought a couple cans sort of as a joke when we were at a gas station way up in Northern Wisconsin (they also had big cases of Hamm's, which I've never actually seen for sale before). The stuff tastes like paint thinner.
