Discussing balls on the internet is about as fruitless as it is in real life, ignore function saves scrolling time, I come from a boxing family(though we suck), and almost all my posts are edited multiple times. Anyway, Dempsey's mauling of the 6'6" Willard is required viewing and proof that the better heavyweights of yesterday can't be discounted caue of their size. I would wager he would give most modern heavies a run for their money. I haven't read his book, sorry. Boxing lessons, I would recommend a trainer of some sort as your always going to be doing somthing wrong without knowing it. You need another set of eyes.

I'm glad you chose to respond to the content in my post, you should take me off ignore and do so in the future, as it is quite educational! Seriously, he actually writes about that fight in the intro, about how he was nervous because he was outweighed by about 50 lbs and the other guy looked like a sculpture. He then explains that it is his use of proper speed and power that caused to him to destroy the opponent, which is what he goes into in the book. The training is something that I do, but the thing is it's hard for them to go into specific technical issues when there's a large group of people training. I figure looking at some fundamentals and trying to gain an edge can't really be bad or anything. The way I look at it is that most people have bad habits, and it's hard for the trainer to correct them unless you're taking one on one lessons. I just figure to supplement my training in the gym with this would help me curb some of those bad habits before they start.

Private training is the best if it's something your really serious about doing, though I imagine it's rare or expensive in some places. I used to study old school Tyson's leg leverage for punching power...though it obviously didn't help me much. Good luck if your pursuing some sort of career in boxing, and please be fucking careful in the ring regardless of circumstances. And in other news, it looks like Ruslan and Sultan is official for the first unification bout since the Holyfield/Lewis farce. From what I've seen, both were impressive against huge lugs they couldn't knock out. I see White Tyson pulling this one out with a possible decision though it's hard to say.

I figure at this point if I ever want to go far that private instruction will be necessary at certain points, but you're right in that it is expensive for the most part. Where did you find the footage of him? Online or tapes? I will upload the book when I get home, it's not in print but it's a small pdf file, like 5 MB so it's no biggie. I'm sure others here might have some interest in it as well.

EVIL~! alkeiper Posted July 5, 2007 Report Posted July 5, 2007 Jack Dempsey vs. Luis Angel Firpo (MUST WATCH FIGHT) Honestly, I think Dempsey was overrated as a fighter. His big wins came against either large fighters with little boxing skill, or much smaller competitors (Georges Carpentier was like taking on Oscar De La Hoya). The advantage Dempsey had was that he could knock down a fighter, swarm over him and punch him immediately when he rose, before the downed fighter could even reposition himself. Check out footage of the Jess Willard fight for an example of that. Gene Tunney was the most skilled boxer Dempsey fought, and Tunney dominated the action in 19 of 20 rounds. Not to discredit Dempsey. Boxing was just fought differently in those times. I'm not certain a fighter could come from that era and win today without adjusting his style.

They were tough as nails though; insane schedules by today's standards, lighter gloves, more rounds in most instances, no rules or early stoppages to protect hurt fighters. I'm not sure some would be as dominating but someone like Dempsey would still raise some serious hell. Tunney was a great fighter as well, I believe he only had like one lost before challenging Dempsey.

A patient Wlad picking his spots against a shelled up survival mode Brewster. The odd stoppage was probably for Brewster's best, but not exactly for the the fans or for Wlad(who didn't even look like he turned it up yet). Evidently, Wlad injured his left hand early and that hopefully won't prevent him from fighting again before the end of the year.

I couldn't make it out to HDC for the Margarito/Williams fight, so I stayed home. Glad I did. War was on tonight. Glad Gatti didn't get hurt more than he did, shouldn't have been in the ring to begin with. Gomez was raining bombs on his head in the last round. Speaking of Williams, guy needs to get in the ring with Cotto, yesterday.

He was the aggressor the majority of the fight maybe losing the last 4 and he should of gotten credit for the "accidental" headbutt that Bernard hit him with. I don't know how a fighter can win by clitching for 6 straight rounds!

It was a great fight, and you can argue Taylor was ahead on points (although I had Pavlik 57-56 at that point), but to say Taylor won five rounds is ludicrous. I'm almost glad the KO took it out of the judge's hands.
