While I doubt it would have ever surpassed the Arena League as the "minor league" of the NFL, they did some things right. The problem was that Vince should have done whatever NOT to make it seem like he and WWE, was a big part of it. And more planning wouldn't have hurt. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler as announcers? Come on. Oh, and I'll definitely be skipping this DVD. Vince disgusts me.
Danville_Wrestling Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 I'm very disappointed with what some of the reviews are of this DVD. I used to be a big Vince mark back in the late 1990s and am sad that only a few minutes of the DVD is devoted to pre-1998. I would've liked to hear more about how the WWF was struggling in the mid-1990s and such but I'm not surprised that aspect wasn't included in this DVD because they wouldn't want to make it appear that they were ever struggling. Surprised they didn't put Vince's title win over HHH on here. That's kinda ridiculous. Do some people around here believe that on some of these DVD's they don't include much of the past because they don't want fans seeing how good some of those days were and then asking themselves why we end up with the crap we have now?

The "back stage" locker room shit they did was second. Vince making sure everyone knew this wasn't the NFL! No, this is Vince McMahon Football. Vince really shouldn't have been seen on screen. He should have kept quite about his involvement. But that just wouldn't be Vinnie Mac, his ego would never allow it.

Most notably Jesse Ventura "vs." Rusty Tillman, or the cheerleader dressing room dream sequence, which was probably the final turning point for any non-wrestling football fans who still remained with the product to that point

Yes it was buried. Yes the ratings were bad but I do think it would have developed into a fun alternative, just like Arena ball. A whole lot of the players were college stars, and while that's a huge drop from NFL play, they didn't just forget how to play the game once they got out of college. true. You dont hear ESPN complaing about the AFL being on NBC do you? Vinces involvement immediately killed any credibility form the mainstream and no one gave it a chance Plus of course having WWF personalities at games didnt help either. Jr and Lawler (just briefly as he quit wwf in late feb) and Ventura as announcers was indeed dumb.
Hasbeen1 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 I think the Ventura feuding with the coach thing was pretty late in the season and the ratings had been going south. The bashing I remember more than anything was a dropped pass in the end zone from week one, ESPN especially showed this again and again through the whole season as an example of how bad the play was. You'll find a dropped pass like that in every game of the season in the NFL this year, but that doesn't mean the players are bad. Saturday night was bad too, I saw more than one half on a Saturday night just one time, but it was a great game, an overtime game with the LA team and the fans enjoyed it. I usually watched the Sunday games and I got to attend two, loved it and it was at a reasonable cost too. Arena and NFL Europe get network games now, but like the other person said, you don't hear ESPN carrying on about how the play is second rate and doesn't need to be aired. One last thing, the play improved a ton by the end of the season, naturally because the players had more time working together. If you took all the NFL players, shuffled them and put them on different teams, you'd get no consistent play for a while, just like the XFL was at the start.

Ventura wasn't a bad move as he is a good announcer and was somewhat credible to the mainstream and Ross, was an actual football commentator. It was the decision to put Lawler in there that baffled most and really hurt the product. Ross, was a curse because he represented WWF. They could have hired any college/pro announcer in the country and been fine but Vince chose to hire in-house instead.

Another problem were the team names! The only difference between the XFL and Arena Football, of course, is that Arena Football is making boatloads of cash these days compared to, well, the XFL's financial success.
