TWiB 8/28 - 9/3

Recommended Posts

I don't think he threw him out because Cirillo disagreed with the call. He threw him out after Jeff slammed his helmet, which equals an automatic ejection. I don't think Timmons purposely made the "out" call just to be a dick. I mean, it was a close play, and I've seen umpires call guys out that were more clearly safe than Cirillo and they weren't trying to be dicks. I still have no idea what Brady Clark's deal was.

So, who does everybody think is the worst umpire in baseball? I'm torn between CB Bucknor and Angel Hernandez. They both suck.

I'll bet Alex Rios feels like a total idiot right now. Either that, or he feels as sorry for this team as the fanbase and decided to give them a little pity.

Mark Lorreta was dfa'ed by the Red Sox.

There's the link so it doesn't look like you're just blurting things out.

I believe that was a mistake by Rototimes. They misinterpreted an article that said he was the designated hitter. That being said, I am fairly certain that the Sox were shopping him this week. I can't believe that there wasn't one playoff team looking for a veteran .300 hitter with a decent glove (and an All-Star this year to boot!).

From the meaningless stat department: Alfonso Soriano needs one outfield assist to become the first player to have 40 homers, 30 stolen bases and 20 assists in one season. He would also become the seventh player to record 40 homers and 20 assists in a season; Babe Ruth did it twice.

Rich Hill quietly went eight innings, giving up one run, striking out six and walking just one. It's the second consecutive outing in which he's given up one run and gone at least seven. I don't think he's a front-of-the-rotation starter, but it's looking like he's finally taken that step forward from being labeled a AAAA guy.

Soriano is also a couple of stolen bases away from joining the 40/40 club as well. He came close in 2002 when he had over 40 stolen bases but only 39 homeruns. Vlad Guerrero almost joined the 40/40 club as well back in 2002.

Randall Simon is now a Phillie. I can't remember a team making this many post-July acquisitions in some time.

I was just gonna post this. He'd annoy the hell out of me now, but I've got nostalgic warm and fuzzy feelings for the guy because of 2003.

John Lester has Lymphoma. Holy shit.

It seems like there has been a huge black cloud hanging over the entire Red Sox organization the past month or so. Really tough break for the kid. Hope he can make a speedy recovery.

Hopefully he pulls through and gets over this. One day there is going to be a writer who writes a book about the 2006 Red Sox. They are the choir boys version of the 1991 Mets who had a book written about them called The Best Team That Money Can Buy or something along those lines. This has got to be a season from hell for the Red Sox.

It's not quite the same. The Mets lost 90 and 103 games in consecutive seasons. The Red Sox have merely finished (or will finish) out of the running. People forget that the Sox are still on pace to win 90 games.

Possible DOUBLE double-header Saturday/Sunday Vs. Braves for Phillies at home. Jeez. Manuel said he'd prefer a late Sept. make-up, but then the braves would hafta come in from Colorado. I want 4 games in 2 days, that'd be neat (but harsh on the rotation).

SPEAKING OF WHICH...

"Rookie Scott Mathieson is slated to oppose Kyle Davies in (Saturday's) nightcap."

Just when you thought it was safe...HE'S BAAAAAACCCKKKK,

Mathieson's fine, just raw. It sucks that he's up though because he's a tremendous AAA pitcher, and we're in the playoffs.

Mathieson isn't a major league pitcher. They should play a triple-header. Just kidding (Al, has that ever happened?)

The Pirates and Reds played three on September 2, 1920 at Forbes Field. The Reds won two of the three.

Everett's 2 run throwing error should have just secured the Mets the victory tonight since the Asstros can't score 3 runs in one game right?

I hope it starts pouring hard in the Bronx so the Yankees get the win since the game is official.

The Yanks are winning this one whether it rains or not. The Twinkies aren't gonna score at least 6 runs in the last 4 innings.

Make that 7.
