Jeter is a very good player and he's having an excellent season. But really, the Yankees would hardly suffer if they lost him for the year. Just look at how they did with Sheffield and Matsui gone this year, and your eyes should tell you how insignificant one player can be to a machine like the Yankees. Let's look at a theoretical situation where Jeter is out. They already have a better SS on their team. If Jeter was out, they'd slide A-Rod over, acquire a 3B (like Shea Hillenbrand or comparable player) and lose a game or two in the standings. It wouldn't exactly bury the team. And I don't know why you have a problem with Yankee fans liking Jeter. You exaggerate even more, maybe because of the media, I don't know, but you're pissed at us for liking our team's (this year) best player? What's up man? He's one of the better hitters with RISP this year, so it's not like him going out wouldn't hurt us. If you take Ramirez or Ortiz off that 2004 team, maybe the Red Sox still would have been as good, but you don't see Yankee fans going "OHH THEY THINK ORTIZ IS GOD..MAN I WISH HE WAS HURT..THEN YOU CAN SEE BIG PAPI ISN'T THAT VALUABLE!" Comparing Jeter to either Biggio or Bagwell (especially Bagwell) is like comparing apples to oranges. Derek Jeter's played in over a hundred postseason games. Bagwell's played in 33. Jeter's average is about .50 higher than Baggy's, but his OBP is only slightly better. Biggio's only played in 40 postseason games, and his stats aren't anything really great either, but not horrible. And plus, Jeter didn't have to face Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz in every single postseason series for the better part of the 90s. O.k. that's my best attempt at vindicating Bagwell and Biggio. Biggio and Bagwell aren't like...my favorite Astros of all-time, but if you're an Astros' fan that doesn't like Bidge or Baggy, something's wrong. Guest Felonies! Report post Posted September 14, 2006 The statue should be a reward of sorts for amazing service to your team, but it shouldn't come until you've hung 'em up. Compared to retired numbers, statues are serious business, and as such should be limited to only the best players in the history of your team. In the case of the Astros, yeah those two (plus Nolan Ryan despite the team-hopping) are the greatest Astros ever, but just wait until they're done before you put their likenesses out there. And actually has a spotlight on him. And has management that pressures him to perform. As opposed to Philadelphia, where baseball is the 4th most popular sport following the Eagles, Flyers, and 76ers, and no one cares about baseball at all, and the management probably doesn't know half of the players' names. In Philly, when he got to play, he was very much respected for his plays at the plate, hustle, and throw-outs. However, his offense was just too abysmal.
