I could be wrong, but I think you can hit them over 600 feet in HR Derby.

Yeah, you can. In fact, you can actually hit the ball out of the entire park, if you really drive one down the lines.

Apparently the Wii controlls *shockers* actually work decent for a fighting game.

I always expected the critics to like it. It's something different and they don't play the genre seriously.

He mentions it's not accurate 5% of the time and that using normal attacks is uncomfortable and just glosses over it like that's no big deal. I'm picturing playing T5DR where you flick a remote to do elbows and hopkicks but it's inconsistent and jabbing is a pain. That would be unacceptable.

The Wii controls in a fighting game are a gimmick that will never be as effective as standard controls. I'm sure some apologists will say "durr but it's fun!!!", but I can't imagine a fighting game is much fun when the inputs don't work or are too slow/difficult to input a good chunk of the time.

Then you're stuck just playing MK Armageddon, a game that came out last year and wasn't good to begin with.

At least we're getting rehash games where the new controls really will be viable, and in some cases a better way to play (Resident Evil 4). Game devs just need to be smart with the gimmick. If it's not a viable way to play their game, they need to include standard controls, or just scrap the gimmicky controls altogether.

Fun if fun though, GQ. I enjoy playing boxing on WiiSports even though I have no idea how to differentiate my punches from roundhouse to jabs (it seems to happen randomly).

Fun is 100% subjective. Someone could have fun playing Superman 64 for example. If someone thinks unresponsive controls are fun, that's their prerogative.

"There's no time to waste."

Oh you just hate the Wii (which you own). HATER!

Well, he hasn't praised the sixaxis. Of course, the only ones who seem to do that do that post on gamefaqs and neogaf I think.

Mario Party 8 is out. I haven't played the Mario Party series since the first one, but I liked it, and the Wii is made for these types of games so it should be pretty good.

GQ making a positive post about a Wii game? Well now I've seen everything!

I might rent it this weekend.

You know what, screw this "all Wii games must be discussed in the OAO Wii thread" nonsense. I want the first person to play MP8 and have opinions on it make a new thread.

If you remember a few months ago, someone broke my first Wiimote by swinging it against a bedpost. Given that it turns out he and his group of friends were going around robbing people, I had no druthers in trying to get Nintendo to repair or replace it after I got out of my dorm (long, long story..). I called customer service today, and I was told that since it came with my Wii, it was covered in the warranty, but she gave me a strange troubleshooting option. I was told to take the remote, turn it upside down (buttons facing the floor), and smack the button side.

It worked.

Mario Party 8 is rather fun. A lot of the mini-games are more of the same from the first installment, but some of them make good use of the Wiimote, and are quite a bit more fun than they were with a standard controller. Then there are a few that seem to be newly made for use with the Wiimote, like the lightgun style mini-games. For a mini-game compilation, this game smokes Wario Ware, because the mini-games actually have some context (the board game) and they also aren't quite so short and basic, meaning there's actually replay value here. Bring on Mario Party 9-16.

Mario Party 8 is rather fun.

On a normal-person scale, this is a ringing endorsement. Is that really you?

Would someone who utterly loathes the previous Mario Party games and likes Wario Ware perhaps like this one?

Some of the mini-games use the same kind of gimmicks as some of the Wario Ware mini-games, so I would guess someone who liked Wario Ware would like this. It's obviously not as fast paced because it's a board game at heart, and it's probably better playing with at least one other person. I don't know about the previous Mario Party games other than the first one, but a few of the rehash mini-games that show up in MP8 are more playable due to the Wiimote.

I'm getting a Wii next month, what's the concensus on the games I should be picking up off the bat?

I'll go by what I've played.

-ExciteTruck is my current favorite game. It's fun as hell and has a lot to unlock. It's probably the best undiscovered game on Wii.

-Twilight Princess is a great game if you're a Zelda fan. A lot of people will tell you the controls feel tacked on, but I'd disagree since I felt like it really added something to the admittedly tiring 3D Zelda formula.

-Super Paper Mario is another fun game, but it's on the short side. However, I've had around three or four people play it and hate it, so I'd say it's for hardcore Mario fans only. Also, it's sorta funny but not LOL HI-LARIOUS as some have said elsewhere.

-WarioWare is great only if you have between three and twelve people to play it with. The single player's okay for an occasional pickup, but I can't say I've gone back to it in months. There are a few pretty entertaining unlockable games that I have played on occasion, but again, they're more fun if you're taking turns.

-People criticize Wii Play alot, but it's got a better reaction from my friends than any other Wii game I own surprisingly. You're gonna want an extra Wiimote within the first 24 hours of owning it, so you might as well pay an extra ten bucks for the games.

And games I've rented:

-Trauma Center: A friend of mine picked this up for our group when we were all home for Christmas. After the initial "I can't believe you rented the fucking surgery game", I was surprised at how obsessed we became with it. We wound up going through it twice, so I guess it's short, but there were at times seven people taking turns on it.

-SSX Whatever-I found it to be pretty fun. You tilt the nunchuk to steer and wave the Wiimote to do tricks. I wouldn't mind owning it, and I've never bought an SSX game before.

-The Godfather is kinda on the amazing side IMO. I never got into the GTA/Sandbox genre, but being able to actually choke someone out was liberating. It provides a few "holy shit I can't believe I did that" moments.

-Sonic and the Secret Rings is the worst game I've played on the Wii. Frustrating controls, and the most repetitive levels ever (you seriously go through the same stage at least ten times doing different "missions" like time attack, ring collecting, destroying enemies, etc).

-Rayman Raving Rabbids has been rendered obsolete by WarioWare.

ExciteTruck is so underrated, it amazes me. My girlfriend and I never get bored with it, though we do get a little frustrated at some of the requirements. To me, it is must-own.

Twilight Princess is superb. I didn't feel the controls were tacked on at all, it felt natural.

Wii Play is great fun. I was playing it with a group of friends, and I swear we were all ready to cry from laughing too hard after a few hours of taking turns dueling with it.

Super Paper Mario wasn't quite what I was hoping it would be, but it's a good time. I'm taking a break from it right now only because I didn't want to beat the entire thing within a week.

Wario Ware is definitely worth a rental, because it's quite fun for a while, but it was probably one of the worst purchases I've ever made. The game is beatable in a couple hours, and there really isn't any replay value. Mario Party 8 is probably a better option for a party game.

The Dragonball Z fighting game is surprisingly good, but someone who isn't familiar with the series may not be able to get into it.

Has anyone heard anything about what kind of Mario Kart is going to be released for the Wii. I had initially bought one for myself on launch day, but I sold it a few days later. I was waiting to hear what would happen with Mario Kart, and whether or not Online match play would be available. If so I'd definitely buy one again in a heartbeat.
