PlayStation 3

How long did it take for the PS2 heat to die down before the console got shipped in regular every week or so?

I was looking for it pretty regularly and didn't find one until March 2001. It released in October 2000, so I guess about five months.

There was a lot more early demand for PS2, though.

I would think that with all of the first-person shooters being "touted" as the great games of the next generation, the war supporters would encourage more gameplay.

The Ebay sales are the obvious sign to me that the PS3 is not a console meant for fun. The actual number of PS3 sold is actually around 250,000. And 20,000 of those went on EBay. The numbers will spike again the week before Christmas.

I don't follow that logic, sorry. Explain that.

What does the fact that thousands of greedy people camped out and bought PS3s with the sole intention of reselling them on Ebay have to do with whether or not the PS3 is a "console meant for fun?"

There's similar things going on with the Wii, although not to as ridiculous an extent. Is the Wii not meant for fun?

No, there are still lots of hardcores who would be glad to pay retail price for a PS3, but they couldn't afford to knock off work for a week and camp out for it.

People are greedy assholes. Another video game company has exploited the holiday shopping insanity. None of this is news, nor does it reflect on the console's future.

The PS3 was meant for hardcore gamers. Everyone else could care less. My problem with the launch was that such a rare system, if it was really something out of the gate, would only see one or two auctions on eBay for every ten up there now. There was no real rush to play the system, and the auctions show it. The Wii is only making 400 or so for an auction because the system's cheaper, it's more readily available, and people want to play Zelda.

I agree, this doesn't say anything about the PS3's future. But it does say a lot about the video game consumer. They aren't a niche market of smart buyers anymore. They are tools now, just like any music, movie, or sports fan.

The PS3 was meant for hardcore technophiles who happen to play videogames. It's hardly a "hardcore gamer's" heavenly bliss right now.

Sony isn't positioning it as a game machine. Yet. It's going to me the ultimate media settop box! It may be *smarter* than you! Download movies! View your photos! Make microtransactions! Use your PSP as a rear view mirror! Take over your living room! Emotion! Toy Story graphics in real time!

It will be back to being a gaming machine when the average consumer balks at it. But yeah, only the hardcore crowd really wants it now, because the price point isn't even close to mass market acceptable yet.

I think many PS3 buyers are just getting one for the status symbol. Even if you're a big techie geek, what's the need to spend crazy money for a Blu-Ray drive now?

I just can't see a significant amount of people willingly spending $650 (after tax) just to have fun with a gaming console. That's insane. Unless you're like a millionaire.

$650!!?! OMG!!

That's like...a cheap PC. Or half the price of one of those pieces of crap iMacs Apple makes.

People spend a hell of a lot of money on pricier PCs to game on, not counting upgrades. And the price has been beaten to death. Why are we still talking about it?

And if you paid for a high-end HD TV...you know, the only type of TV that Blu-Ray movies are going to look any different than DVDs on...then the price is hardly that ridiculous.

But can a console get you porn as well for free?

yep

It is smart enough to know what type of porn you like whether its hentia or MILFs or generic blonds.

I "somewhat" agree with the PC thing but very few go out and just buy a PC specifically for gaming. Most PC gamers upgrade components one or two at a time for even the most hardware intensive games so that PC that you've had for 7-8 years is still more cost effective over time.

What has Sony got over the 360 than the included Blu-Ray? And that's not much of an argument since the 360 has an optional HD-DVD add on.

Cheaper and easier HD upgrades is 1 minor thing.

Free online.

Certain Exlusive games(Most Xbox exclusives are or will be availible on PC)

I dunno. I'm still debating on which one to get myself.

And I don't mind paying for a one year subscription to Xbox Live, just being able to download free demos is worth it.

Sony is usually pretty cheap when it comes to giving things for free.

That is the whole thing about the PS3 I don't get, you can get the same exact stuff on the 360 and it's cheaper. Plus, there are over 100 games now.

Yeah, RPGs aren't my thing so I have no reason for it.

I'll get a PS3 when it's around $250 so I can have a cheap Blu-Ray player.

I do play a large number of RPGs, but nothing is out for it yet so there is no reason to get one right now. Especially when the Wii is more of a novelty and has Zelda at a far cheaper price.

I agree with this though. If you aren't an RPG fan, not much point getting a PS3.

If I were an RPG developer *coughSquarecough* or a fighter developer *coughcoughNamcoahem* I would absolutely be in transition over to 360 development.

Absolutely.

Why? Sony's hardware has superior potential, they're the reigning market leader and the XBox 360 is a complete and utter joke in Japan, which happens to be a prime market for RPGs and fighters. That makes no sense.

Tekken, Soulcalibur and Virtua Fighter sell more in America then Japan.

SC II and MK showed the best thing to do is go multiplatform.

Square is signed to Sony.

Not sure about Namco.

Square is free to develop for whomever they like, why else are they doing so much with Nintendo again these days?

Namco is now under the Bandai branch, and I'm pretty sure they can develop for whomever they want as well.
