snuffbox Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Here's an article for the TSM Investigating Team http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ...gers/index.html
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Days from now, Rogers' grandchildren will sit on his lap and he'll tell a story of how baseball fans tried to take away his records because they were jealous.
Guest Felonies! Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 This is obviously a really big conspiracy and it's going to be up to us & ESPN to crack this fucker. SNARKY REMARK IN UPPERCASE LETTERS. Nobody's trying to take away his records. You can't punish him now. That window opened and closed. I still would like to know why Tony La Russa, who said the reason the best hitting in baseball roughed up his #5 pitcher was that the White Sox stole his signs, let an obvious chance to take a 2-0 lead go by.
The Man in Blak Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 I'm actually more pissed off at TLR for not pinch-hitting for Molina in the ninth last night. How does he resist the most golden of opportunities for micromanagement that he's seen all series?
The Man in Blak Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 The more I think about it, the more likely it seems that Bobby Valentine whacked Tony LaRussa in the head with a steel chair in the locker room and came out to the dugout in his Tony LaRussa mask. Like Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible.
Brett Favre Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Valentine would've made a big fuss over the pinetar.
snuffbox Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Stop being a rekcuskcoc snuff. Im gnillet
The Man in Blak Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Valentine would've made a big fuss over the pinetar. I was reaching for Valentine, since there's actual historical precedent there, but you're right, he probably would have flipped out about the pinetar as well. Bad analogy.
Guest Paul Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Pedro's midget is dead... Moment of silence...
Annabelle Posted October 23, 2006 Author Report Posted October 23, 2006 everyone cheats. kenny was just too stupid. it makes sense that after he had it removed that he just decided to use a more clear substance to cheat instead.
tominator89 Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Rick Vaughn: What's that shit on your chest? Eddie Harris: [wiping his finger across his chest] Crisco? Eddie Harris: [wiping it across his waist line] Eddie Harris: Bardol? Eddie Harris: [wiping it along his head] Eddie Harris: Vagisil. Any one of them will give you another two to three inches drop on your curve ball. Of course if the umps are watching me real close I'll rub a little jalapeño up my nose, get it runnin', and if I need to load the ball up I just... Eddie Harris: [wipes his nose] Eddie Harris: ...wipe my nose. Rick Vaughn: You put snot on the ball? Eddie Harris: I haven't got an arm like you, kid. I have to put anything on it I can find. Someday you will too.
Guest Felonies! Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Kenny Rogers had brown on his hand from petting Fudgums. Ohh!! awwww, fudgums
Justice Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 I find it hard to believe that La Russa would just roll over for a friend in the World Series of all things. But I do agree that his actions really make no sense. This whole story doesn't make sense, just how everyone let it go so quick (As in the managers).
Guest PimpDaddySarp Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Haven't read the whole thread, so I apologize if this has been said already but... The whole Kenny Rogers thing is obviously an attempt by ESPN to create a story.
Guest Felonies! Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 You're right. The real doctoring was done not by Kenny Rogers, but by Fox. They CGIed the pine tar in.
Guest PimpDaddySarp Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 You're right. The real doctoring was done not by Kenny Rogers, but by Fox. They CGIed the pine tar in. Oh obviously there was shit on his hand, and in every game he's pitched this postseason. But he's not the only pitcher using pine tar for grip on the ball, and the Cards players have said that they never noticed more action on his ball. It's not vaseline, it doesn't effect the trajectory of breaking balls. He got caught with it on film, and ESPN has blown it up. But their own analysts, like Kruk and Dusty Baker, have said its a normal practice that many pitchers use (albeit more discreetly) but they keep pushing it. I'm just saying it seems like they are pushing for reasons to care about a World Series that does not have the overall interest a WS should have. But I'm not a fan of either team so my opinion is probably skewed towards skepticism.
Guest Felonies! Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Well yeah, we all know that lots of players doctor the ball. It's just fun to discuss the whole thing. An interesting hypothesis is that Tony La Russa was outsmarting himself again. Apparently he wanted to mess with Rogers psychologically by keeping him in the game without the tar. Fat lot of good that did you, Tony. Oh, and I wouldn't even cite John Kruk and Dusty Baker's analyses to prove that the sky is blue.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Someone more versed in baseball and physics explain this to me. How does pine tar make a ball harder to hit? Isn't that the shit unscrupulous players smear on their bat to HIT better? Does pine tar improve every aspect of the game? Pine tar on the shoes to run better? Pine tar in the opponents' eyes to steal 2nd? Hitting and fielding I understand, since it would facilitate contact and grip, but wouldn't a sticky ball be easier to hit? Where the fuck does one buy pine tar, anyway?

Where the fuck does one buy pine tar, anyway? The pine tar isn't applied to the baseball but, rather, to the fingers to improve grip. With improved grip, you can apply more spin on the ball, adding an inch or so of break onto your curveball, slider, or other breaking pitches. It can also help counteract the effects of cold weather on the baseball, which apparently becomes more slippery as it gets colder. MLB.com actually has a pine tar stick for sale on their online shop.

Where the fuck does one buy pine tar, anyway? Pine tar is used to get a better grip. Pine tar is allowed on a baseball bat to a certain extent (18" in some direction). The infamous Pine Tar home run by George Brett was simply Billy Martin trying to get an edge by exploiting a technicality. Rogers would use pine tar to grip the ball better. You wouldn't really use it to doctor the baseball because it's dark and noticable. You would rather use something like vaseline. If you did use pine tar on the ball, the purpose would be to create more break on a pitched ball.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Ok, so the ball wasn't doctored. What rule did he allegedly break? Sorry to derail the thread since I'm not talking about the actual games per se, I just find cheating interesting. Other sports should discover pine tar. Boxing. A little pine tar on the gloves. That'd gash someone pretty good.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 What rule did he allegedly break? Rule 8.02b "The pitcher shall not have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance. For such infraction of this section (b) the penalty shall be immediate ejection from the game. In addition, the pitcher shall be suspended automatically for 10 games."
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Pine tar should be covered under MLB's performance enhancing drug rules.
Brett Favre Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Now the Cards are saying he scuffed the ball too. This guy is breaking rules left and right. What a bad ass.
tominator89 Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 I don't see why any of this is news. Baseball players have been doing stuff like this since the beginning of time.
Brett Favre Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 When you get caught, it's a big deal.
tominator89 Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Gaylord Perry and Phil Niekro made the hall of fame. It's not the huge conspiracy that everyone thinks.
The Man in Blak Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 When you get caught, it's a big deal. The problem is that Rogers wasn't caught.
Brett Favre Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Babe Ruth used a corked bat. Things are different today.
