hey Czech, who do you want to buy your beloved Cubs after season's end? All I've heard thus far as a possible buyer is Mark Cuban.

Well, Jerry Reinsdorf has some vendetta with Cuban, and I'm not clear why. I do know that he "warned the league" when Cuban bought the Mavericks, and was the lone vote against him. Reinsdorf is also the chairman of the ownership committee, is best buddies with Selig, and it's been hinted that he would convince other owners to vote Cuban down. There's so much illegal here. What a world, where Jerry Reinsdorf wields so much power among fellow owners. He's like five feet tall.

 

Don Levin, who owns the AHL Wolves, would really love to buy the team. I'm not sure how he made his millions, though. (Not that it matters, nor am I insinuating some sort of illicit means, I'm just saying I don't have much info on the dude.) Jerry Colangelo is a local guy with a championship ring and has expressed interest, but he doesn't have any goddamned money because he blew it all on the fucking D-Bags. Bill Murray and Steve Stone want to buy the team, but not necessarily together, and I don't think they have the cash to make a deal, because we're talking about approaching a billion here. Cuban could be a great owner for the Cubs, since he could take that same high standard of statistical analysis he brought to the Mavericks and apply it to baseball, where it fits best. However, my prediction is that we end up with a consortium of Chicagoland millionaires and corporations, with Murray as a figurehead.

So, I don't know if this is old news or not, but Johan has cut off negotiation talks with the Twins until he becomes a free agent at season's end. SI reports that it's not a matter of money, but the length of contract that the Twins were offering ( 2 years @ $18 mil each).

 

Okay, Schuerholz, it may be wishful thinking, but do what you can. Think about who's going to be there in a season or two and beyond -- Hudson, James, Davies? The farm system isn't ready to produce talent that'll fill those holes in the rotation. Maybe Harrison in 2009, but that's likely it for now. They've already flirted with trading Andruw last season, so there's some financial flexibility right there.

 

edit: Not that I'm condoning doing ANYTHING with Andruw that involves him leaving the team.

Well, I just heard on WEEI that there's gonna be a four-way trade where the Red Sox get Ichiro, Rocco Baldelli, and Carl Crawford for Matt Clement and prospects.

When I read this, my first reaction was that I was going to have to yell at Frigid Soul again.

Indians-Angels in Milwaukee last night drew about 19,000. So much for the predictions of only 3-4,000 people in attendance. Yes, the 10 buck tickets for field level surely helped a lot, but it just goes to show that Milwaukee is a good baseball town after all.

 

And 16,000 tonight after people, not learning anything, thought sales would drop off into Marlins numbers after the first game.

 

Yeah, pretty good numbers again, even with all the snow around the Milwaukee area. I'm sure people will find a way to complain when there's "only" 12,000 or so at today's day game, though.

 

Nice for the Brewers to win two games last night, as well. Tied for first place! Wooo!

I'll reiterate that if the Twins fall out of playoff contention this season, they should try to trade Santana. They have a 0% chance of resigning him if he goes to free agency. They don't have the $200 million+ that it is going to take to get him on a long-term dea. Teams would be willing to give up a hell of a lot of interesting stuff for a year and a half of Santana.

The remaining value on Santana's contract is an absolute steal for the Twins, so I can't see why they wouldn't want to wait as long as possible before dealing him off. I know that the Soriano non-deals from last year's deadline are still in recent memory, but Santana is a much more valued commodity than that and, as a result, I can't really see any scenario where the Twins would have difficulties dealing him next season.

This Sunday, on Jackie Robinson Day, there won't be only select representatives from each team wearing Robinson's #42. Five teams, the Dodgers, the Cardinals, the Pirates, the Phillies, and the 'Stros, are having their entire team wear special #42 jerseys. I think it's a fitting tribute, but, perhaps this is overkill a little bit. Since the Phils and the 'Stros are playing each other on Sunday, That'll be...what...like 60 guys wearing it for one game? The Dodgers, though, I can understand wearing the number as a team.

 

Edit: Oh, and Mark Prior, after making progress in extended Spring Training, had to be shut down and sent to the doctor because of shoulder concerns. There goes his playing the 2007 Future's Game.

This whole thing is pretty poorly executed. Just leave it to the Dodgers and the Mets. Having 25 guys wear 42 is going to look ridiculous, and it's really kind of a superficial way to honor breaking the color line, don't you think? It's just a 4 and a 2. I'm sure there are better ways to do this.
