Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 At last! After so many weeks of remakes and commercially-accessible films dominating the box office, we finally have something original like "Disturbia" on top.

RedJed 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 I am just blown away by Grindhouse totally falling off the map this quickly. Went to it Friday afternoon and the theatre was actually packed, so figured it would jump this week in the numbers. Apparently not. With such a significant drop, it would be pointless to try to "re-release" the films seperately with additonal footage, as was suggested. Just blast out a kick ass DVD of both films (probably release them seperately then as DVDs to try to make up for some $$$ losses) and hope for the best. It's really too bad because I heard there was movement on making Don't and Thanksgiving as full features for a potential sequal, but that's gotta be impossible at this point. Aqua Teen not even cracking the top 12 doesnt shock me either - its a very specific niche market film, and the advertising wasnt really strong for it to begin with, and must imagine its on a smaller number of screens than the norm. I can't believe people flocked to Distrurbia - looks like an potentially "ok" film, but nothing to rush out and see for sure.

razazteca 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 So Shia Labouf was able to cross over to become successful at something other than Disney movies great maybe Transformers can make $100 million its opening week.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 You shouldn't be shocked at Grindhouse doing so badly at the BO. The marketing for the project was horrible, it's over three hours long, and on top of all of that it's a very niche type of product anyway. It should do great on DVD though. The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 How can you say the Aqua Teen advertising wasn't really strong when they created one of the craziest publicity stunts ever and got an entire major metropolitan city (well, the government of said city anyway) really pissed off about it? 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Well, at least ATHF did better than 'Slow Burn'. What the hell was LL Cool J thinking? And Red Line only made 1 million dollars more on double the screens with the full support of Myspace. And ads during absolutely everything on television. I'm shocked ATHF even made 3 million being on a grand total of 877 screens.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Anybody got any predictions on how Hot Fuzz will do this weekend? Shaun of the Dead apparently got enough praise and a big enough following for HF to get a wide release, so I guess it could do well theoretically, but at the same time it seems like an indy movie inexplicably getting a wide release. I'm guessing it'll make the middle of the top 10, somewhere between 7 and 4, but it won't get #1.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 I'd say it'd hit #3. I hope for #1, because everything's pointing to it being just as good as Shaun (and with Pegg and Wright doing it all together again, I can see that easily), but yeah. Does look fucking hilarious. ATHF was funny, but it's downside was that it was an hour and a half of the show. The same pace, too. So it was joke, 2 second break, joke, etc. etc. The best part was the opening 5 minutes when they parody those old "let's go out to the lobby" commercials that used to play before movies. The rest of the movie was still hilarious, just not AS hilarious.
Guest Queen Leelee Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Grindhouse isn't surprising. If I had to pay to sit through Death Proof, I would have demanded my money back and told everyone to stay as far away from this crap as possible.

Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 grindhouse was poorly advertised. i didn't realise shit about it until the day it came out. it was like, holy shit a tarentino movie is coming out...wait, you mean tonight? I don't know if it was the amount of advertising because I saw quite a few ads and posters for it as much as the content of the advertising. The movie was poorly promoted. I don't think there were many people outside of small niche audience that understood what the movie(s) was supposed to be. It just looked like a shitty movie in most of the ads with no explanation or background to what a grindhouse is or why we should care about it. Tarantino's involvement was also underplayed. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2007 Grindhouse was sequenced totally wrong. Death Proof cannot help but be this huge letdown after the frenzy of Planet Terror and then the crazy trailers. It also seems cheaper and less elaborate...a clear B side to a double feature rather than the main feature. This will play better on DVD where I'm assuming these 2 will be released either separately or on a 2 disc set where you can watch Planet Terror by itself, then maybe check out Death Proof whenever. Planet Terror was certainly the more exciting and marketable half of it, but even there I don't think a lot of people understood. While I think eventually Rose McGowan will be iconic as Cherry Darling the idea of a handicapped heroine with a machine gun leg is something that seems ridiculous at first sight. One thing I would like to note about Robert Rodriguez movies that is getting a bit irritating is his constant use of strippers who don't ever strip. From Dusk Till Dawn had Salma Hayek as the head stripper/vampire but she never got naked at all. Obviously there was Jessica Alba in Sin City never getting naked despite it actually being a key element to the character in the comic. Now McGowan in Planet Terror. Hollywood actresses take heed: If you are going to play a stripper, be prepared to show some tits. Otherwise don't take the role.

Even the out of the left field cut "the end" to the film too just like every episode damn near. But it still was great. I had tears in my eyes from laughing so much during the first part of the movie though.
