snuffbox 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 I have a friend that's an engineering student there, and I haven't heard from her all day. I'm a little worried, but at least I know she was not in that residence hall, as she lives on the other side of the Drill field. Unfortunately it looks like two halls were involved. Where does your sister live?
The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Not my sister. Just a friend of the family basically. She lives in front of where the first shootings were and I would assume her normal classes are in the second hall. I'm worried, as I still haven't heard from her or from my sister, who was the closest to her as far as a friendship goes.

AlexPuma 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Jesus Christ, can these dumbass kids stop killing each other. All this does is give me flashbacks to the ROCORI School shooting, when I was in class when the shooting occurred. It sucks, and I don't think I recovered psychologically yet from that experience, and being reminded of the senseless violence like this only makes it worse. Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Sounds like there were separate shootings in a classroom and a dorm. Only mention of one gunman at this point, but they're not sure if he was shot by police or killed himself. I hope the scum was at least taken down by police. Really sad story it sounds like. Exslade ZX 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 And this weather here is shitty as well...we can't catch a break. We're getting what feels like Hurricane winds. What I don't get..is how the hell did the gunman get off so many damn shots? There's a phonevid on Yahoo of the shots, and seriously...I guess the cops are trained or whatever..and you really don't want to just rush in like that on a man with a gun, but the number of shots he gets off with the cops (at least from what's seen) pretty much just standing there is amazing. And ridiculous. And as I go to ECU, (So most of my high school is split between ECU/NC State/UNC/Va Tech...yea, I know Tech seems sorta like an odd man out) I know a lot of people really freaking out right now probaly. Just take a look at the VA tech facebook. And evidently, recently VA has had 2 bomb threats, and something about an escaped convict getting onto the campus (dont know if he was armed or not)..so something crazy is going on around there. If you watch the video, after the first couple of shots the police do rush towards the building. The heavy winds, 40-50 MPH gusts here in Goldsboro, probably made it difficult to hear the gunshots. There is also a report that he chained the doors to the buildings, which made it even more difficult to enter the building. Police probably didn't want to enter the building, as it might have sent him into a rampage, and by the time he started to shoot they couldn't get into the building in time. Kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Just a terrible event.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 The question I always wonder is why this type of stuff happens with more frequency in the States than anywhere else. It can't just be due to the Second Amendment, there is something deeper here that needs to be addressed because this situation will raise so many questions as to how to stop something like this from happening again, which you can't really do because its impossible to predict something like this How badly some people get shitted on combined with the ease in procuring firearms would be my best guess. You can say "people should deal with life's shit", but the fact is, some people are weak, and can't deal with it. So they end up flipping their lid and going on rampages with those easily procured firearms. It'd be nice if society didn't brow-beat certain groups and individuals, or have such a perverted idea of what success and worth are, but it does, and some people can't handle that. Of course, this shooting could not be a social issue at all and could instead be the work of a defective individual. Who knows?
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 Yeah, hard to pass judgement until we know the shooter's background. Could be a disgrunted former employee or something for all we now.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2007 The best coverage of this was actually on the techsideline.com message board for VT football and basketball--there were a couple kids posting from classrooms, locked in with the lights out. As a UVA guy who knows plenty of Tech kids, I add to the chorus of "mad fucked up."
Guest Report post Posted April 16, 2007 I don't really know what to say. I will never be able to understand how someone could kill one person in cold blood, much less this many. People are fucked up. It says a lot about the world we live in.
Guest Queen Leelee Report post Posted April 16, 2007 This is part of the reason why I didn't want to live in a dorm... it's so wild and free that you basically can't stop things like this from happening. At UB, there was this freaky old guy who went around the computer labs trying to buy passwords and shit, and they could do nothing about it. And like I always say, I'm surprised it doesn't happen far more often. I'm sure we all knew an outcast in school, or some drug addict, or some kid who had abusive parents, or even some little thing like a girlfriend cheating on someone, or failing a test... you can go on with the reasons. And often these young people don't know any better.

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted April 16, 2007 I think this just about proves that the generation born in the 80s is seriously fucked up. Now they've graduated from high school shootings in the 90s to college shootings in the 00's. The images I'm seeing right now on CNN are disgusting. I also just got out of class not too long ago, and it's weird to think something like that could happen where I am. Thankfully my campus is an open one in the middle of a downtown in a major U.S. city, so I doubt it, but hell I don't know that could just make it even more likely. I don't know much about the Blacksburg area, but I assume since VT is a major school it's probably a pretty large campus in and of itself, isn't it?
