July WWE 24/7 Discussion

Recommended Posts

The splash image for August is HBK in a ref's shirt, so SummerSlam 97 might be part of the month anyway.

I quite enjoyed the latest ECW episode, that was a pretty nice Sabu video package (complete with a Benoit appearance!).

This was also the first time I've ever seen all of Thursday Raw Thursday as I believe TSN was only giving the 2 hour Raws 90 minutes (I could be remembering this wrong but I know it happened a few times, and the night they did air this Raw my cousin was over and wanted to play Mario Kart 64). Sid vs Austin was not bad. Was that the first Headbangers match in the Fed or had they wrestled (not counting the Nuns gimmick) on Superstars or Shotgun already? Sunny was smokin as well. And of course, the ad for Duckman! On Nitro... boy was that a sad torture rack Nash used. I love Hall's chokeslam though, always have.

August has a proper preview now.

Legends = JYD ("from his early days in Stampede Wrestling to memorable WWE battles against Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and “King” Harley Race")

Big Ones = SummerSlam 89 and 97

Shorties = "Outdoor Match" theme featuring Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Sting and Lex Luger at Spring Break in Panama City, Ric Flair defends the NWA Championship vs. Kerry Von Erich at Texas Stadium, The Road Warriors vs. the Fabulous Freebirds for the AWA Tag Team Championship at Comiskey Park in Chicago, and Bret Hart defends the Intercontinental Title vs. hometown hero The British Bulldog at SummerSlam in Wembley Stadium in London.

sounds good, get some Stampede footage on 24/7, my guess is one match will be the first ladder match vs Jake Roberts

and a random thought, Tuesday Night Titans is ok, but i would rather see them rotate between Prime Time and Wrestling Challenge or Superstars whichever came first

I would actually much rather they start airing Superstars or Wrestling Challange from some arbitrary point around 1990-1992, I've been keeping up with Prime Time every week so far, and although there is the occasional good match, the bulk of it is tremendously boring.

I am also rooting for them to actually at some point start airing WCW Saturday Night from 1992-1995, but I feel it will be a while to get to those shows.

I voted for SS 91, since that is one of my favorite shows ever and I don't think I have a decent DVD copy of it. I kinda wish they would show the 1995 one though, just for the hell of it since I protested that PPV at the time and never wanted to see it (due to Mabel main eventing). Now I'd like the show since it's one of the few SSs I haven't seen and I'd like to get the ladder match.

Also haven't seen SS 2003. With the hard on they have for these 2003 PPVs you'd think they would bust it out.

i said earlier that i would like to see Wrestling Challenge or Superstars added to the TV Classics, i also have a couple of other ideas for WWE 24/7

TV Classics: i would like to see them maybe air recent OVW shows, ok their shows run about an hour so commercials edited out that would be like 40-45 minutes and you figure 4 to 5 shows in a month would be about 2 hours total, add it at the end of the month, and run it till the end of the next month and eventually once the MNW progresses along i would like to see Thursday Night Wars with Thunder and Smackdown

Big Ones: i'm sure everyone would agree but i would love for WWE to show at least one WCW every month, and maybe more late 80s and early to mid 90s WWE PPVs

I would love for WWE to add a section called "Before They Were Superstars"

It could feature a popular wrestlers first match in the WWE.

For Instance, if it's Randy Orton you can show a bunch of his OVW matches, his first WWE match and his first PPV match. Maybe have him introduce it to say what he was feeling at the time.

Also in that section they could play every weeks episode of OVW since that's where future stars are made, plus I'd love to follow the progression of Colt Cabana.

They could also air the first episode of OVW and every 2 weeks show the next one. It would be fun to see early John Cena, Brock Lesner, Batista and CM Punk.

I still maintain that it's actually a decent show outside of the crappy main event. You've got the ladder match, a fun Hakushi-123 Kid opener, Bret Hart performing another miracle and carrying Issac Yankem to a *** match. Barry Horowitz wins again! And everything else is either decent enough or too short to really suck. Even The Undertaker Vs Kama manages not to suck. Hell, I'd go as far as to call it a good show.

I think the last ten years of Kane demonstrates that Issac Yankem wasn't a useless wrestler. It was a bad gimmick but Glen Jacobs is a capable wrestler.

Yeah but Glen Jacobs wasn't as good as is as Kane as he was as Issac Yankem. He was still pretty green back then IIRC.

i would love to see a whole month devoted to WCW in some form, like we would get 2 or 3 of the best PPVs and maybe for a change of pace instead of a Old School WWE card they put a couple Old School NWA-WCW cards and in the Shorties they put on the best WCW Cruiserweight matches, Legends wise i would put maybe Harley Race and a Legends of Wrestling disscussion revolving around WCW, along with the normal programming of MNW, NWA-WCW, ECW, WCCW and recent WWE PPVs

I am new to WWE 24/7. (Thanks to Charter St. Louis for just now getting around to adding it.) I was wondering how often a new Legends Roundtable airs? I loved the heat one currently airing and and looking forward to future showings.

I voted for Summerslam 88 just to see the Demolition vs. The Hart Foundation match-up.

my on demand finally started working again and I havent watched much. They did edit out a benoit match? ughh. this sucks were not getting the full proper shows then. I know itsc close to the targedy but its not like you need to do that on 24/7. but I just saw benoit make an appearence in the sabu music video on the new ecw episode on 24/7

cool for the summerslam shows, but arent they releasing a dvd set next year of all the summerslams?

Maybe it's my affection for old WWF material, but I love the Jim Duggan program. He got real watered down as his time in the WWF progressed, but he still showed shades of the motivated, balls-to-the-walls Duggan that ruled the UWF.

The Slammy Brawl may be my favorite over-the-top throwdown in wrestling history. There's a great mix of good brawling, big spots, and legit comedy in there. From the get-go it's great, with Monsoon's "Oh my god, did you see that?" response to Duggan's 2x4 flying onto the stage from off-stage. Race and Heenan both do nice-looking table spots and if you don't laugh at Duggan smacking Race with a three-foot FISH, you have no soul.

Yeah, I said it above but the Duggan/Race thing is one of the greatest things I've seen on 24/7.

With Benoit, I guess people are telling Meltzer he is in some people's 24/7 videos and it's up to the cable company to edit him out, but that seems a bit out there, though I assume it's a reference to Mania 23 and not MNW (since some people really do have Benoit on their Mania 23).

Last September was a "Territories" theme on 24/7 and I'd love it to be a "WCW" theme this year. Actually you'd think they'd try and make September a big month since I recall hearing it will be free on some cable systems as a trial.

They edited the page for next month.

SummerSlam 97 and Summerslam 89 are being played. I finally get a copy of 89, I haven't seen this show in years.

SS 89 is a very good show and I enjoyed as a kid and enjoy it now. Here is how I look at the various SS PPVs and let's see if people here agree or disagree:

1988: First one, historical importance, Warrior destroys HTM, main event is fun, there's some other okay stuff too. Been years since I've seen it however.

1989: A better show, albeit with a lesser main with Zeus in it. Still there is a good Harts/Busters match, a nice 6 man, Warrior/Rude IC is terrific, and so on.

1990: A decent show but to be honest aside from the Harts/Demos title match I don't really care for it that much. Shoddy main events.

1991: Wonderful, joyous show. One surefire classic in Bret/Perfect, all sorts of great blowoff booking (Dibiase/Virgil, LOD/Nastys, Bossman/Mountie). One of my favorite PPVs.

1992: This might be my favorite PPV actually. Amazing atmosphere at Wembley, Warrior/Savage is good, Martel/HBK is fun stuff, LOD/Money Inc. is solid, and the Bret/Bulldog match is quite possibly my favorite match ever.

1993: This show sucked ass from what I recall. Luger/Yoko isn't that bad of a match I don't guess, but of course the booking was insanely retarded. Bret/Lawler has a finish from hell that STILL gets dusted off from time to time. Shawn vs. Perfect disappoints. Watch it and throw eggs at your TV.

1994: A pretty good show, not a blow away show though. Fun IC and world title matches, though the UT vs. UT match is silly. Why didn't they main event the cage match?

1995: Can't fully comment since I haven't seen it. Mabel main events, but there IS a good ladder match and some other decent stuff that was mentioned above.

1996: Sucked hard. Most of it is ungodly boring, but I guess some might enjoy the Boiler Room Brawl and the main event is about the highest point Vader had in the WWF.

1997: Better in concept than execution. Lots of fun gimmick matches with the Harts, enjoyed Shamrock vs. Bulldog, but the main event is boring aside from the ending, and truth be told I've often found Owen/Austin a bit overrated.

1998: This was a fun show with a great main event angle, a fun Rock/HHH ladder match and lots of other Attitude Era hilarity. Don't care for the Lion's Den however.

1999: Honestly I barely remember this show, but I did like Test vs. Shane on it. I have a hunch this is one of those Russo era shows that probably doesn't hold up.

2000: Amazing TLC, more Benoit/Jericho goodness, though I think Chyna won the IC here, ugh. Main event was adequate. A good show but not any better than 5 PPVs in 2000.

2001: This is a great PPV, with a bunch of good to great stuff on it (Austin/Angle, Rock/Booker, Jeff/RVD, Storm/Edge). Proof that the Invasion didn't totally suck.

2002: This had quite a bit of good wrestling but I was so down on the WWE at that point that I never really enjoyed it. HHH/HBK was a shockingly great match but I don't know so much now in hindsight. Rock/Brock is overrated (much like Lesnar in general, but that's just me). Edge/Eddie has some of the most egregious no selling of a shoulder you'll ever see. RVD/Benoit is good if you watch it a couple of times to get a feel of it.

2003: I have not seen this PPV due to a cable malfunction at the time. But let's face it, HHH wins the EC after being hurt the whole time, so it likely sucks. It is kinda funny that RVD vs. Kane was the semi main event and was after the WWE title match (Angle/Lesnar).

2004: This was pretty bleh. I think everyone here knows how I feel about Orton winning the title, though Eddie/Angle was decent. UT/JBL was garbage. Not much of a PPV.

2005: I quite liked this show, enjoyed Hogan/HBK a lot. Cena/Jericho was fun enough, I kinda liked Batista crushing JBL, Benoit making Jordan his bitch in 25 seconds was hilarious. Good but not great.

2006: A lesser version of the 2005 show really. Edge/Cena was okay but they had better matches, Foley/Flair was vicious but had the lame Melina crap to ruin it. Hogan/Orton was pointless. Batista vs. Booker was eh. A middling SS PPV.

For the most part, Summerslam usually turns out to be pretty good. The only ones I would really put down as bad would be:

1988: Historical yes, but boring otherwise. MOTN goes to Bulldogs vs. Rougeaus (with a bad ending).

1996: Good main event, and the Boiler Room Brawl has a great last couple minutes but a boring first 2/3. Everything else ranges from very average to bad (Lawler-Jake).

1990, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 were all pretty mediocre. WWE needs to get back on track with good SS's.

For the PYBO, I'm voting 1994 since it's the one SS I don't have on tape.

I would much rather see Summerslam 88 on the Pick Your Big One if for no other reason then because it's another 3 hour show that was edited down to 2 hours on Home Video, and I want a copy of the uncut original.

No you don't. I have it and honestly, the only real difference seems to be the Coliseum version cut out the dozens of spots for the boxing show they were promoting throughout the PPV.

I wouldn't mind seeing SS 88 again since it's been forever since I saw it. Maybe it wouldn't hold up, but I think the important stuff would still deliver (main event, Warrior crushing Honky).

SummerSlam is usually one of my favorite PPVs. The first few (1988-92) are for the most part really good, some better than others. The 1993-97 period was pretty "eh" with the 1994 show being pretty decent and the 1997 show being sorta fun but underachieving. SS was hell on wheels again from 1998-2002, with the exception of 1999 being a bit lesser. Since 2003 I think the PPV has lost something, possibly because it seems like WWE has stopped giving a crap in the summer and fills it with Diva Search nonsense and what not.

I like '92 and all, but I wouldn't rank it anywhere near the best Slam of all time. It's got one fantastic match (Bret/DBS), one very good match (Warrior/Savage) and nothing else. You've got a lot of average-at-best matches and no real blowoffs (HBK/Martel may be the exception). Those of you ranking it up near or at the top, is it because of the two mains? They're quality and all, but don't entirely make up for Nailz/Virgil, Crush/Repo Man, Kamala/Undertaker, etc.

Yeah but the thing is that those bleh matches on SS 92 at least are brief. Nailz squashes Virgil and that's it. Crush squashes Repo and that's it. Kamala vs. UT as a match is brief and not much, but it did at least have UT's awesome entrance in the English hearse and the hilarious expression on Kamala's face when UT sits up.

There were 8 matches shown on the US PPV. I can't comment on the others that were essentially dark matches, but out of the 8 matches I'd say half of them are good matches and the other stuff is at least brief and inoffensive. LOD vs. Money Inc. was a very good tag match. Michaels/Martel is a really fun match, and one of the few heel vs. heel matches that worked (though I'd say Martel played face a bit more). Warrior/Macho, while not as good as WM 7, was still really great and had a terrific storyline with Flair and Perfect. Yeah it was inconclusive, but the important part wasn't that it needed a clean finish, but that neither man sold out to Flair/Perfect. And of course there's Bret vs. Bulldog in the main event, what more needs to be said about that one?

I still regret not getting that PPV when it aired. Had to get it at Blockbuster about a month later, and I was the first person to have ever rented the tape. They gave me a free WWF frisbee for being the first to rent it. Even though I got sick at my stomach from the old version of KFC's popcorn chicken, that was still a great night.

Oh my god! The old version of popcorn chicken tasted like breaded skin. It was horrific! I'm glad they changed it up.

And I also enjoyed 92.

I watched the two Slaughter shorties and the Von Erich vs OMG shorty today. If you like a bunch of punching (and I do!) these are for you. Maybe not the DeBeers match though, that kinda sucked. It was funny how AWA had his chyron as "Sgt. Slaughter - GI Joe - America's Hero". I marked out for Slaughter throwing a dropkick in the Sheik match. Mean Gene's commentary during that match shows why it's a rare occurrence to find him calling the action.
