This Week in Baseball 7/23 - 7/29

Recommended Posts

yeah, I haven't noticed any failure to score runs by the Brewers. They've gotta be top 5 in the majors in runs scored.

4th in the NL, 11th in the majors

I have no way of checking, but I bet a big part of that number is some the huge blowout wins they had in the first part of the season. I mean, look at their homestand last week...three of their wins were only by one run.

They'll be fine, I feel. It's just frustrating to watch them right now.

Craig Biggio will announce his retirement at 3 pm today, effective Sept. 30.

Good for Bidge. Newer fans and casual fans who might not have seen a lot of Craig might not know just how good Biggio had been for a significant portion of his career, but there was a time in the mid to late 90s that you could make a case for him being one of the top three players in the game. I might've cracked on him a little bit for being old and unproductive, but, if you look at his numbers for the last couple of seasons, even they are better than the numbers of a lot of guys who tried to hold on too long and contributed nothing. Biggio also mentioned that he wants to catch an inning on the Sept. 30th home game against the Braves just to bring everything full-circle. I imagine that in a couple years, Biggio will sign a similar contract to the ones that Nolan, Clemens, Bagwell, and Jimmy Wynn have signed, making him an assistant and advisor to the GM and occasional roving minor league coach. I hope that I'll be able to make it up to Cooperstown in five years to see Biggio (maybe Bagwell) inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Biggio needs to catch, play CF and 2B in his last game. That would bring things full circle.

I'm not a fan of the Astros, but I loved Biggio in the nineties. A great player and no doubt first ballot Hall of Famer. I don't think many realize that he was one of the best 2B to ever play the game. Good to see him get out now instead of holding on for another year when the team obviously needs to move on.

Biggio always just looked like a ball player. Dirty ass helmet, the eye black, and he was also good in Ken Griffey Jr. Slugfest for SNES. One of the more underrated players ever.

I watched Bruce in the Futures game, Al, and he had a hell of a swing. The announcers kept comparing him to Larry Walker. I'd love to hear a report on him and Votto. Apparently, Votto was moved from first to the outfield right after the break, but I haven't heard anything about him since.

From FJM.

That is such a better performance by Jeter. Because those stats were True Yankee stats. Those stats had Pinstripitude. Sure, ARod hit 2 HR and Jeter zero, and sure ARod was better in every single offensive category, but ARod's numbers were chokey. Jeter's were fucking calm-eyed and fist-pumped and Yankish. Jeter commanded respect with his five singles over seven days. He hit those five singles in a way that said, "Sorry, Boston, not today. Not in my house. Not when there are True Yankees walking around these hallowed grounds -- not when Bucky Dent and Scott Brosius and Jim Leyritz and Joe Girardi are still alive.

:D

I think Votto does not get the call-up until September, unless some deal is made this week, which still could be possible with Conine & Hatteburg possibly moving.

Exactly what I expected. I'm not sure if either will be moved now, though. Hatteberg has a sore hammy that he could technically play on, but that might make same teams pass on him.

Griffey is putting on a clinic in RF tonight. He had a long run for an over-the-shoulder catch at the wall, and then had a spectacular diving catch complete with a throw from his knees to get the ball back in to double off a runner.

Pitching has been good so far*, but not exactly a hitting clinic. Belisle is the epitome of "shaky," and this is the norm for him against just about anyone.

*Edit---In response to the Brewers putting on a pitching clinic. I didn't mean Belisle had been good so far.

John Maine just hit his first career home run and I couldn't watch it thanks to MLB's insane blackout rules. Apparently three hours away from Pittsburgh is close enough to black out Pirates games even though there are absolutely no local means for me to watch tonight's contest.

Craig Biggio, on the day he annouced his retirement, just hit a grand slam to give the Astros a 7-3 lead over the Dodgers. I'm not ashamed to admit that I am crying like a little girl.

On paper the Jays should have one of the best offenses in the league.

Johnson

Rios

Wells

Glaus

Thomas

Overbay.

Thats a solid 1-6 lineup, yet the team is .500

I know there were injuries, but with an offence like that you have to wonder what the hell happened.

Sweet Jesus fuck, the Reds are really bad at baseball this year. Good thing they got that win out of Harang last night; it'll be the only one they get.

It doesn't matter how terrible Kip Wells is, Cubs-Cardinals games will always be rollercoasters, I guess. It's something to be proud of as a baseball fan, that you can say you're part of something special, but fer fuck's sake, Kip Wells v. Carlos Zambrano should end up being like 9-1, not 4-3 with Pujols as the 27th out and go-ahead run.

White Sox took two from the Tigers today, which is bad for the deadline buyers, because that doofus Kenny Williams probably thinks they're back in it now.

The Giants have come back from a 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at four against Atlanta. This after Tim Hudson went 8.2 innings and came within a strike of a complete game shut out. I do feel bad for him, but I'd feel a lot worse if it wasn't the Braves we were talking about.

Johnson missed significant time. Rios has been good. Wells, Thomas and Overbay have been grossly underachieving. Glaus has been good. That's pretty much it right there, combined with Halladay being terrible for a while, Burnett being on the DL 25 times, and the injury to Ryan of course. The fact that they're at or near .500 has a lot to do wit their bullpen being really good this year, along with unexpected starting pitching. Downs, Janssen are all having solid to great seasons. Wolfe has been excellent in limited appearances. Accardo had faltered for a bit, but was doing a nice job before, and seems to have righted his ship again. Then Marcum was pitching really well earlier in the year, and McGowan and Towers are pitching really well lately. If their key guys were performing as they should have been, Toronto would be challenging Boston right now. But all you can hope for at this point is for their young pitchers to continue playing at this level and for their star players to get back on track next year, and they should have a real shot at getting to the playoffs.

The Blue Jays hung an 11-run 6th (tying a team record) on the Twins this afternoon en route to a 13-1 win and the sweep.

Now, watch them struggle to score a run in their next game. That seems to be the way it goes -- explode for a ton of unnecessary runs one game and get beat 1-0 or 2-1 the next.

Joel Piniero cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Pawtucket. He's going to be stretched out as a starter and is slated to go 3 innings tonight. Definitely an odd turn of events seeing as how there are a half dozen contending teams that could have used him in the bullpen.

Tell me about it! That was what I was talking about with you in the thread last night. Belisle is consistent with working 4-5 innings, giving up hits, and typically 4-5 runs during those innings. The bullpen actually did better than usual last night, but they still gave up an insurance run. Griffey came a few feet from tying the game, but most likely they would've stretched their horrible bullpen to the limit and lost in extras. When Harang starts, the shitty bullpen is there for two innings max.

Rotoworld is reporting that Scott Linebrink has been traded to Milwaukee in exchange for pitchers Joe Thatcher, Will Inman and Steve Garrison.

The Brewers just sent three of their top 25 prospects to SD for a struggling middle reliever.
