This Week in Baseball 8/6 - 8/12

Recommended Posts

In a strange twist, Corey Patterson's little brother Eric is getting the call-up instead of Felix Pie. Patterson's been one of the Cubs' top prospects and is reportedly a more natural baseball player than his brother, but this move confuses me. Patterson's a second baseman, although he's gotten work in the outfield this year.

Aren't they going to play Mark DeRosa in the outfield? That leaves a hole at second base that could be filled by Patterson.

Eric Patterson can play second or the outfield. He can share second with Fontenot. DeRosa will probably spend most of his time in right.

I haven't been to North Side Baseball yet to check in on those morons, but I bet there are two prevailing schools of thought:

1) OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD. GAME: OVER. ROAD TRIP: SWEPT. SEASON: DONE. TEAM: FOLDING. WORLD: ENDING.

2) Hey, no biggie, we can finally just put Matt Murton in; since he's been rumored to take a lot of walks and he's a skinny white guy, he's perfect.

This post combines both:

I think people are fooling themselves if they think this is anything less than devastating. I know Soriano has been cold, but he can catch fire and carry the team at any time. Essentially, Lou will choose Fontenot's bat over Murton's, which is a shame.

EDIT: Can't get the link to work.

The Red Sox signed Bobby Kielty to a minor league contract today. He is going to spend a few days getting in shape down in Pawtucket before he gets the call up to be JD Drew's platoon partner (or at least that's the plan). He's had some injury problems in the last year, but he absolutely destroys left handed pitching.

On my way out for the Scranton/Buffalo game, where hopefully we'll confirm or deny the Joba Chamberlain rumors. The pitching matchup is Kei Igawa vs. Jeremy Sowers.

The first report was right, as Brower pitched in today's game.

It's also very funny to see yankee fans go crazy when Mo struggles in April every year. In his ladt 36 innings, he has a 42Ks and 2 BBs. Thats a 10:1 K/B ratio!

Man, Wandy Rodriguez is pitching like a fuckin' ace. The Cubs usually suck against lefties, but this is nice to watch. I just wish someone could explain the huge differential between Wandy's home and road stats.

I hope you're not going into accounting or anything like that if you think 42 divided by 2 equals 10.

Also, it's 36 Ks and an 18:1 ratio. A very curious point to divide the season to make that point, too -- he has 34 Ks and one walk in his last 34 innings.

Eric Byrnes is having a career year at age 31 and the Diamonbacks have replacements waiting in the minors. I don't think the money is that crazy given what we've seen on the open market, but I wonder why they would do this extension now when he doesn't really fit into their long-term plans. It just doesn't pencil out for them.

Well with Joba up, the NYDaily News is reporting Edward Ramierz is being called up again before the end of the week. This sure is going to be risky, but they had to try somthing as this old bullpen was just not cutting it at all and was going nowhere.

Joba/Edward/Viz/Farnsworth/Rivera/Bruney makes me a lot happier than Myers/Proctor/Farnsworth/Viz/Bruney/Rivera.

The Phillies tend to lose important games to the Marlins and Nationals EVERY SINGLE YEAR, so I'm just hoping for 2 outta 3 against the Fish, and 2 outta 3 against Atlanta.

A sweep would be nice, but with Moyer and Kyle LOhSE pitching, I dunno. Eaton against the Braves won't be pretty, either.

Kielty has a career OPS of .888 against left-handers (.965 in 2006) and he can handle all three outfield positions defensively. I don't see the harm in bringing him in as a 5th outfielder if he is healthy (which he may not be). He certainly offers us a better option than WMP against lefties.

Yea with all the As problems when it comes to scoring runs Kielty can't be too great.

He does crush lefties though supposedley.

Kielty's career would have been so much better if he gave up switch hitting. He's completely useless swinging left handed yet he insists on being a switch hitter when it clearly brings him no advantage. Its not even just the numbers, he flat out looks better and more comfortable swinging right handed.
