Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2007 I didn't see much discussion about David Wells being released earlier this week by the San Diego Padres. This could likely signal the end of his career as a major league pitcher. In my mind, he's just short of consideration for the Hall of Fame, but he did have a very long and productive career with many highlights (and an equal number of lowlights). If this is the end, he finishes with 235 wins, an ERA+ of 108, a perfect game and three All-Star appearances. He was one of the best strikeout to walk guys of his generation. As of right now (age 35), he's hitting .306 for his career with 376 home runs, a 5 time All-Star, 2-time Silver Slugger, 1995 Rookie of the Year, 1999 NL MVP, plus he has a World Series championship which counts for a lot with the voters. In the postseason, he is a .288 hitter with 13 homers. And for you OPS gurus, he is 11th among active players (most who will be HoFers in their own right) in career OPS with a .9478. The Padres, continuing in their attempt to upgrade their starting rotation, have claimed Igawa off waivers, major league sources told FOXSports.com. San Diego was awarded the claim on Friday, and the two teams have until the end of the weekend to work out a trade for the 28-year-old Japanese pitcher. If no deal can be worked out in that time frame, Igawa would remain in New York for at least the rest of the season. No American League team put a claim on Igawa, nor did any National League with a worse record than San Diego. The Yankees CAN offer Alex arbitration if he opts to become a free agent and then would receive compensation in the form of draft picks if he signs with another team. Under the terms of the current deal, arbitration cannot be offered after the 2010 season. That is the final year of the contract as it stands now. So if A-Rod leaves, the Yanks would get the picks. Now before you say "oh, sure, draft picks" consider this: The Yankees received the 21st and 41st selections of the 2006 draft in compensation for losing Tom Gordon to the Phillies. Those picks turned into Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees had lost their own pick that season (No. 28) for Johnny Damon.
