Scott Spiezio went to rehab

for injuries or booze?

An 'undisclosed substance'. He got put on the restricted list, so it's either booze or dope.

Man, these St. Louis Cardinals make Irish Catholics look like teetotalers.

Ankiel's prospects are iffy. Those 32 home runs in AAA came along with a .314 OBP. It makes me wonder that if that's what he does against AAA pitchers, how much can big league pitchers exploit his swing? I'm pulling for him though.

I didn't see much discussion about David Wells being released earlier this week by the San Diego Padres. This could likely signal the end of his career as a major league pitcher. In my mind, he's just short of consideration for the Hall of Fame, but he did have a very long and productive career with many highlights (and an equal number of lowlights).

If this is the end, he finishes with 235 wins, an ERA+ of 108, a perfect game and three All-Star appearances. He was one of the best strikeout to walk guys of his generation. He had a career postseason ERA of 3.17 in 125 innings of work. Nice work, Boomer.

Wells' 1998 season was phenominal. He pitched a perfect game, went 18-4, started the All-Star Game, and started Game 1 of the ALDS, ALCS, and World Series.

Tonight we're being treated to Phil Hughes against Fausto Carmona. Hopefully Joe lets Joba get an inning tonight (hasn't pitched since his debut Tuesday) and doesn't Edwar him.

I gotta think the Cubs are just claiming outfielders for the Hell of it. Shannon Stewart...Scott Podsednik...maybe next they'll claim Nook Logan or Jay Gibbons next or something.

I don't understand why Edwar hasn't been called up yet. I'm dreading a Karstens/Brower appearance this weekend.

NO. NOT PODSEDNIK. NO. NO. HE'S BASEBALL RETARDED.

Oh, and by the way, I've never seen so many people verbally jack it to a AAA relief pitcher with such fervor and frequency as you guys have with this Chamberlain fellow.

After this week's Mets/Braves series, I've been pondering wether Chipper Jones is a Hall of Famer. I would say yes. As of right now (age 35), he's hitting .306 for his career with 376 home runs, a 5 time All-Star, 2-time Silver Slugger, 1995 Rookie of the Year, 1999 NL MVP, plus he has a World Series championship which counts for a lot with the voters. In the postseason, he is a .288 hitter with 13 homers. And for you OPS gurus, he is 11th among active players (most who will be HoFers in their own right) in career OPS with a .9478.

If the Yankees want to get rid of Kei Igawa, they have their chance.

The Padres, continuing in their attempt to upgrade their starting rotation, have claimed Igawa off waivers, major league sources told FOXSports.com.

San Diego was awarded the claim on Friday, and the two teams have until the end of the weekend to work out a trade for the 28-year-old Japanese pitcher. If no deal can be worked out in that time frame, Igawa would remain in New York for at least the rest of the season.

No American League team put a claim on Igawa, nor did any National League with a worse record than San Diego.

The Padres had expressed interest in the left-handed Igawa before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

Just heard about it on NYYFans. Hope it gets done, but I doubt it.

The Yankees CAN offer Alex arbitration if he opts to become a free agent and then would receive compensation in the form of draft picks if he signs with another team.

Under the terms of the current deal, arbitration cannot be offered after the 2010 season. That is the final year of the contract as it stands now.

So if A-Rod leaves, the Yanks would get the picks.

Now before you say "oh, sure, draft picks" consider this:

The Yankees received the 21st and 41st selections of the 2006 draft in compensation for losing Tom Gordon to the Phillies. Those picks turned into Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain.

The Yankees had lost their own pick that season (No. 28) for Johnny Damon. Boston turned that into RHP Daniel Bard

Peter Abraham

Not to mention losing Pettitte in 2004 got them Hughes.

Who was it on this board that said Igawa would be better than Matsuzaka? Was that you Bauer?

I remember calling him the Japanese Jeff Suppan. I would like to take this time to formally apologize to Jeff Suppan. If anything, Petco would be a great place to pitch for Kei. All those bombs he gives up would just end up as outs in that mammoth outfield.

I would be excited about 3 Reds on the list, the most of any team, but after watching Bailey pitch earlier this year I'm just lucky I don't have any gag reflex (this also comes in handy for my day job).

Hanly Ramirez leads the majors in VORP this year. That's unexpected. Bet he doesn't get any MVP votes either.

God damn right he does. Jose Reyes is better. Ha ha ha.

And Miguel Cabrera is #2.

Sun Sports has decided that it'd be a better idea to air a UF/FSU football game from 1980something as opposed to tonights Mets/Marlins game. Fuck sun sports. What the fuck.
