NHL Sept/Oct 2007

CKWS is different from other CBC affiliates. According to it's Wikipedia entry, it only has to show 40% of regular CBC programming and is generally just really low budget, especially the local news. I would watch it before, because my cable company is ass and for some reason, it would come in clearer than the Ottawa affiliate (which, on some TVs in the house, would sometimes not even come in in colour).

I'm from Kingston, and I would try to find an excuse not to watch CKWS whenever possible.

How bad (or more accurately, much different) could it be from any other CBC affiliate?

What treble said.

I'm with Treble - I'm so freakin spoiled by HD. I've got something like 300 channels on my ExpressVu, and outside of the Score, I never watch anything that's not in HD, and that's only about 30 channels. I'm reaching Marvin levels of love.

Yeah, I'm getting to the point where if it's not in HD, it's not worth watching. I was watching Weir win the Fry's yesterday, and the images were just so bad on the Golf Channel I almost had to turn it off. A lot of the time, I can't even stick with a Sens game on A-Channel because it's not in HD.

So with Tucker out indefinately, can someone PLEASE blow this team up. Fire JFJ, clean house, get young and rebuild. The Leafs are gonna miss the playoffs again so why bother.

The Chicago Blackhawks are in talks with Comcast SportsNet to begin televising home games, perhaps as early as this season.

In a memo to the Blackhawks staff, new chairman Rocky Wirtz said that the Blackhawks met with Comcast SportsNet executives last week "to begin discussions about getting some home games back on television this hockey season.''

"It's important to understand that CSN's current schedule was developed well over a year ago, so fitting the Hawks into that schedule can't be done overnight,'' Wirtz wrote in the memo. "But it can be done, and, while no definitive agreements have been reached, we are convinced that it is the appropriate next step to re-energizing Chicago hockey fans, and creating new fans. We are also working on a long-term strategy for televising additional home games in the future.''

The Blackhawks, along with the White Sox, Comcast and Cubs and Chicago Tribune owner, Tribune Co., own Comcast SportsNet.

Rocky Wirtz's decision is a big departure from the policy of his late father, Bill Wirtz, who refused to televise home games, insisting for years that it would hurt home attendance. Rocky Wirtz, who also heads up the family's business empire, was named head of the Hawks following the death of his father last month.

Unbelievable. This is all happening so fast. I had just heard that talks were for next year, but to add some games this year? What a great move by the organization.

I'm sorry that fans of hockey had to sit through that bullshit display.

So you saw the game? I missed the majority of it, but deduced Montreal just badly outplayed Fernandez and the B's defence. There's at least something to be said if they lost whilst outshooting the Habs by 15.

I think Fernandez is still hurt, but a majority of the Bruins' problems is a lack of personnel. Regardless of the Rags game on saturday, the defense needs a legit #2 guy. Aaron Ward is not the answer. He's a nice second pairing guy to have, good in the room, a capable PK'er, but he's not a #2 defenseman. Who else do the Bruins have that can step in? Andrew Alberts has looked terrible this season. Andrew Ference is a good second pairing guy at best. Dennis Wideman can't stay on his own two feet. Mark Stuart is still rough around the edges. Essentially, the Bruins defense revolves around Chara doing everything that he did last year, and stepping up his physical play in less minutes.

I saw most of the game. I gave up at 4-0.

Well, Frederik Norrena's still awful, but I guess it doesn't matter if the Jackets score seven goals. I'm not sure if they've ever scored that much in a single game - it'd be a lot easier to find out if the team's website worked.

Nashville still doesn't know where they'll be, and I seriously hope the answer isn't "Still in Nashville".

It really bothers me when a team plays in a town for a while, does well and still gets lukewarm fan attendance. Then as soon as the team threatens to move everybody & their grandmother's buying tickets. Having a team should be a perpetual support thing, not something where you only give a shit when they threaten to leave. You had your decade, Nashville, tough shit for you if you can't be bothered to show up when it's not a "Show up or stop having a team to show up for" year.

Columbus is rewarded a goal as Jiri Novotny is hooked while making a shot at an open net. Never seen that one before.

3-0 Jackets with 2:22 left in the game, looks like the Jackets and Leclaire are well on their way to their fourth shutout win of the year.

Edit: Annnnd that'll do it. Leclaire's save percentage improves to ninety-five even by merit of thirty-five saves tonight as he continues his terrific start.

Anyone feeling the Central Division revival right now? Detroit's playing the best hockey in a long while, Chicago and St. Louis have suddenly clicked, and Columbus is starting to get off its feet as well. Outside of Nashville (Which isn't surprising after the firesale it had in the off-season), things look pretty good.

The Kings have done two things they didn't do all last season.

Win 3 games in a row

Beat the Stars

According to reports, which originated in the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had discussions with the John Tavares camp about having the 17-year old junior star join Toronto's American Hockey League team.

Tavares is not eligible for the NHL Entry Draft until 2009, and the Leafs' gesture was based on the assumption Tavares would have interest in playing pro hockey as early as next year. Other professional leagues - namely the Swiss Elite League - have reportedly expressed interest in landing the hockey phenom.

While TSN has confirmed that informal conversations have taken place, there have been no contract offers to date, and no discussions that would lead Tavares to challenge AHL or NHL by-laws that prevent players under 18 years of age from playing in either league.

Tavares scored 72 goals in 67 games for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League last season and had 15 goals in the first 12 games this season.

Didn't the Leafs try some shit like this a few years ago with Crosby? I would be utterly shocked if this goes through.

I don't remember, but if those rules only say "play" then couldn't they sign him to the team and make him a perpetual healthy scratch; in essence, you pay him a salary for doing nothing for at least a year in exchange for the rights to him later on?

If I remember the Crosby thing, it's that they would have wanted him to play for the Marlies if the lockout went another season, since he would be eligible to be pro, anyway.

And for Tavares, it would just be to play for the Marlies and he would still go into the draft the next season. I guess there are some people who think they want to use it to make Tavares pull a power-play and say he'll only play for the Leafs when he's draft-eligible, but I think it's just to make some money off of the Marlies.

Really, he should be going into the next draft, but they won't change the rules for him. Playing in the OHL another year will do nothing for him, too.

Good to see the Habs get some bounces and start putting some pucks in the net again. 13 goals in 2 games? Not too bad. Hopefully they can pot a few more tomorrow night against the Pens and a very shaky M.A. Fluery
