NFL Week 5 Fails to Rebuild New Orleans

Recommended Posts

Well, that's the end of the Jets' season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Clemens starting from here on out - in fact, I'm hoping that's exactly what happens.

I love Pennington, but there's no reason why he shouldn't have already been starting against the Dolphins, to see what you have.

Lets see if the Broncos can beat San Diego before we proclaim them potential Patriot Slayers.

The Dolphins couldn't beat a lot of teams but they managed to beat the Patriots a few times. Just because Denver looks bad against San Diego isn't indicative of their chances against New England.

The Pats can't seem to beat Miami in December for some reason

Ok well, I know the Lions had the #1 passing offense going into the game today, but they barely ran the ball at all, and expected to win? Greg Williams just eliminated any blitzing and dropped everyone back into the coverage and the Lions offense fell apart. 5 Sacks, 2 INTS(one returned for a TD). Redskins D had their best game of the season. I didn't think it would happen like this, but hell if I am not happy about it. After the dust settled, the Redskins dominate, but the fact that two of their long drives in the 1st quarter ended with no points due to the offense making mistakes, is something that will hurt against a better quality opponent.

Sorry I don't see what was wrong there. I was venting frustrations about the horrible coach.

I have wanted Billick fired since 2002. I am pleased my team won today but don't feel like it.

Watching that 49ers game made me sick. Late in the 4th quarter, it's 3rd down, they need a few more yards to get into field goal position. And what do they do? Shotgun and run the ball with Gore, and that got them nothing. And then Nedney misses the kick. The 49ers will be lucky to win anymore games this season.

Texans defensive tackle Travis Johnson hit Green in the head with his knee before Ginn was tackled by Anthony Weaver. After the play ended, Johnson stood over Green and taunted him, drawing a 15-yard penalty.

Johnson apologized to Houston coach Gary Kubiak during the game for the penalty. But Johnson was furious later, accusing Green of blocking him at the knees on purpose.

"The bottom line is, it was a malicious hit. It was uncalled for," Johnson said. "He's like the scarecrow. He wants to get courage while I wasn't looking, and hit me in my knee instead of trying to hit me in my head. God don't like ugly, you know what I mean?

"My knee ain't never hurt like it hurt today," Johnson said. "If you want to hit me, hit me in my head, hit me in my chest, don't hit me in my knee. I'm trying to eat just like everybody else. So, to hit me like that, that showed me what type of man he is."

So he basically said.....Trent Green is a little fuckin pussy for going after my knee's and he got what he deserved.

Looking at the play, it's obvious Trent hasn't had to throw too many blocks in his career. However, he did throw a block that bordered on malicious, intentional or not. Johnson was running full speed and Green came at his blind side and went straight for the side of the knees, flipping Johnson over. If Johnson were a LB and Green a WR, Green gets a 15 yard pentaly for an illegal crackback block. The only reason Johnson got the flag is because he was taunting what turned out to be an injured player. Green gets up, the players go facemask to facemask until someone breaks them up.

Green wasn't aiming for the side of his knees. It seems pretty obvious he was trying to get in front of him to make a block, he just didn't get far enough in front of him. He's a QB, he's not going to be making a picture perfect block.

And Johnson is delusional if he thinks Green is going to block a 300+ pound DT running full speed up high. It was poor technique, it wasn't an intentional try to injure him, so Johnson should just shut the fuck up. Yeah, he could have had his knee fucked up, but he didn't, and Green was knocked out & carted off, so it seems like everything "evened out".

I don't think he went into the hit with the intent of hurting the guy, but was he trying to cut his knees out and take Johnson out of the play? Of course he was. That's an extremely dangerous play, and I've done it before myself, and had it done to me. It wasn't what one would particularly call a bad block, if it was a bad block his face would have been turned toward Johnson's knee. I don't blame Johnson for thinking Green was trying to take his knee out, I'd probably feel the same if I were him. The way Green went down in a heap is far too commonplace these days, and it isn't smart. He didn't so much go for a block as he fell to the ground and cut Johnson.

I've seen someone get their knee blown out as a result of a bad block, while I was standing two feet away from them. Wasn't pretty. In fact, it was almost the same as that play.

He's a QB - they make bad blocks all the time. I have a hard time believing Trent Green set up that block thinking "sweet, I'm a-gonna blow up this dude's knees!"

Oh well since it wasn't intentional that makes it all OK then. He could have snapped Johnson's leg at the knee or blown out the ligaments but I'm sure the "it was an accident" defense is perfectly valid.

Fact is, Green was coming from Johnson's blind side. He could have gone high and planted his helmet in Johnson's chest and sent him in the other direction. Instead he went low, risking Johnson's and, as it turns out, his own health.

I don't get it. It looks like Green is completely in front of him there (Johnson's hips look squared up to Green IMO), so he is well within his rights to go low for the block. Could he have been further in front? Sure. But in front is in front. Johnson needs to man up for not having his head on a swivel.

OK, find where I said it was OK just because he wasn't hurt. I said Green wasn't intentionally trying to injure the dude, and that it was poorly executed.

He could have gone high and planted his helmet in Johnson's chest and sent him in the other direction

And could have gotten himself another concussion. Turns out he got 1 this way, but he was probably thinking going low was the best way to avoid hurting himself. Besides, I don't think Green could have gotten him in the chest. Probably the side, but he may have been thinking doing that may have led to a block in the back depending on the angle.

So, to sum up: bad block, dangerous block, but not a block thrown with the intent to injure the guy.

Does Green Bay not want to win this game? They've looked extremely sloppy all night.

See that's what happen in divisional games. Teams get up for em and you don't know what's gonna happen. So even if your team is shitty and plays a good one, it can win. Just like in 2004 Steelers went 15-1 and Ravens went 9-7 but guess who won that game in Baltimore? Not Pittsburgh!!! Cause division matchup is unpredictable most the time.

I think that had more to do with it being Roethlisberger's first action and having to come in off the bench in the process....

You had to turn a Bears/Packers topic into one about the Ravens. I'm pretty sure that when the Bears started the game 1-3 they decided "Fuck it, if we don't go to the playoffs, fine, but we're beating the Packers at Lambeau!"

When you block low, you're supposed to go for the thighs and send them tumbling. Green didn't try to make a block of any sort, he just threw himself at the ground and whatever part he hit, he hit.

Hitting somebody's knee like that is eerily reminiscent of McGahee's Miami injury in the Fiesta Bowl, is it not?

I agree. They looked the same way last week, and they could've put away San Diego multiple times the week before. This is embarassing, especially losing at home to an archrival who they could've put to pasture in the divisional race by winning tonight. Well, any given Sunday, right?

At least there's a bye next week, and the running game looked pretty decent against a normally tough defense. This game was the Packers' to lose, though. Favre finished the game tying Blanda's record for interceptions, appropriately enough.

Also, what's with all the annoying Ravens trolls around here recently? Did Marvin import them all or something?
