AndrewTS Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 ...or at least horror-themed games. Anyone else typically celebrate by sitting down and playing something a tad on the spooky side? I played through and finished Darkwatch recently (although it's basically a Halo clone with a Western/steampunk veneer and starring a vampire cowboy), am playing a budget title I picked up a while back called Ghosthunter, perhaps go hack up some more zombies in Dead Rising, and plan to sit down and play a good bit of Silent Hill 3, likely. Oh, and this sounds totally awesome.
Obi Chris Kenobi Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 There was a cool game on the Mega Drive/Genesis where you were a poltergeist and had to scare people out of the house by possessing paintings, armor and other things. I can't remember what it was called, but it was pretty fun.
Nate Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 I'd have to say Manhunt ranks right up there
Star Ocean 3 Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Jurassic Park for Genesis scared the crap out of me when I played it at night as a kid.
In Credible Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Try out Condemned: Criminal Origins. With a good sound system and the lights off it can be pretty freaky.
DrVenkman PhD Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 That game in a prison that I played in 2004 seemed really creepy. I forget the name now, though.
muzz Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 F.E.A.R was fun to play with the lights off and the sound up, more for the atmosphere than the straight up scares.

That game in a prison that I played in 2004 seemed really creepy. I forget the name now, though. Yeah it was called The Suffering. Scariest games for me: Haunting Ground (PS2) Resident Evil (PS1) Project Zero (PS2) Condemened (360)
muzz Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Oh, the original Resident Evil was amazing as a kid, scariest one of the lot.
AntiLeaf33 Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 The first few levels of DOOM 3 scared the shit out of me. Gotta say, the lighting effects turn that game from a generic FPS to an amazing, screepy, survival horror, shooter
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 You guys ever play Realms of the Haunting? Mid-late 90s, I think, adventure FPS that was creepy as hell. That was good'un.
dubq Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Cold Fear had a neat atmosphere about it but it was ruined by the crappiest controls I've ever used for a survival horror game...

AndrewTS Posted October 31, 2007 Author Report Posted October 31, 2007 You guys ever play Realms of the Haunting? Mid-late 90s, I think, adventure FPS that was creepy as hell. That was good'un. I've been meaning to try it, actually. The Haunting starring Polterguy I believe was the full title of that Genesis game, BTW. Cold Fear had a neat atmosphere about it but it was ruined by the crappiest controls I've ever used for a survival horror game... I thought they were ok (come on, they were way better than the original RE controls!), but it's been a long time since I played it. If you're thinking about the right game it was like "Resident Evil 4 on a boat," right? Reading up on Ghosthunter brought up a lot of discussion about The Suffering, so while I probably won't be playing it today, I'm interested in trying it soon. I may also want to revisit Second Sight. Youtube of The Suffering game footage. Youtube of Ghosthunter game footage. Youtube of Cold Fear game footage.
Ripper Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 I loved the Suffering. Good sound system and low lights, awesome game(and pretty kickass story). I never made my way through the whole sequal. It wasn't as interesting.
Guest Tsukuyomi Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Aliens vs. Predator 1 & 2. Playing as the marine, nothing is quite as frightening as watching your motion sensor go off like a malfunctioning pacemaker and not being able to see what's doing it. That is, until one of those Alien bastards jumps you from some ceiling vent you didn't notice. Best played late at night with the lights out.
Mad Scientist Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 The original Silent Hill game scared the crap out of me when I first played it. It was the first PS game I played that really used the stereo sound effects, and I was playing it really late at night. Perfect scary game. Hopefully the sequels are just as good, and if so, would make great Halloween fare.

If you're thinking about the right game it was like "Resident Evil 4 on a boat," right? Yah that's the one. I just couldn't get used to how wonky the aiming system was. Then again, I also hate games like Hitman and Splinter Cell for shit like that too. I only played the first level of Cold Fear before I took it back to the rental place for something else.
DrVenkman PhD Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 I think a long, long time ago I rented "D". The instruction booklet suggested turning the lights off to play and my memory was that it was kinda creepy.
fazzle Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Project Zero (PS2) That's the same game known as Fatal Frame in the States, right? Yeah, I came in here to say that. The first Fatal Frame is the creepiest game ever.

I heard a lot of good things about Call of Cthulhu (an 360-compatible Xbox game that's also on PC), and been meaning to check it out. http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/adventure/cal...=summary;review I think a long, long time ago I rented "D". dubq Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Has anyone tried out Dementium: The Ward for DS yet? Though, I think it shipped today, as I saw it come out of the "new releases" box at a local game store I was in today... On top of that: is Touch the Dead for the DS any good as well?
AndrewTS Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 Touch the Dead was supposedly pretty bad. I will have to look into Dementium, as it kind of fell off my radar and I didn't realize it was coming out now.
AndrewTS Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 Trailer for the new Alone in the Dark game: http://kotaku.com/gaming/clips/alone-in-the-park-317155.php This **** is going to have to be fantastic to erase the memory of the movie away.
Conspiracy_Victim Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 All these responses and not one mention of Eternal Darkness? I'm a bit surprised. Good shock value scares and does a good job of messing with your head.
Brocklock Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Eternal Darkness, and Silent Hill 2 and 3 fill up my scary quota. I always play Zombies Ate My Neighbors towards Halloween time though. That game is ridiculously fun. Not scary at all, but has enough monsters for me.
Matt Young Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 The Haunting. I'm not a fan of EA games (bar Skitchin') but I really liked Hauting, it was great fun. Skatin'. Bitchin'. Skitchin'.
