The Wire: Final Season

Recommended Posts

"It's amazing how sympathetic Bodie became throughout the history of the show despite the fact that he cold-bloodedly murdered one of the few innocents the show has offered us. Fantastic."

Bodie is still a likeable person though. We've learned that these types of things happen in the game and I think everyone can understand why Bodie had to kill Wallace (even though we all liked Wallace). Bodie had a code of honor and was a pretty smart guy. Hard not to like Bodie by the end, even though he did pull the trigger in Season 1.

Just finished Season Three (only one I hadn't seen) and damn if I don't want Slim Charles to make it through this season alive, probably more so then anybody else who's in the game at the moment. I fully expect dudes like Omar and Chris to get got but Slim is just too fucking cool to go. My dream-scenario is him teaming up with Omar to avenge Prop Joe and the two of them taking on Chris, Cheese, Michael and Snoop.

I have no desire to see Namond and Colvin. Their stories ended fine enough. Poot would be nice to see.

I'm also going to flip my shit if Avon doesn't show up again in some way.

As for season 3... episode 11 of that season is the best standalone episode in series history. The entire Stringer/Avon saga playing out to the end with their balcony scene (best scene in Wire history) and the entire property scene at the end. Just all around greatness.

Goddamn, I am going to be so pissed off in 2009 when there are no new episodes of The Wire.

Chris is becoming my favorite character, dude is just badass.

Avon and Marlo's attorney plays one of the best sleazy bastards ever on tv.

I am loving Clay Davis rants, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Always good to see Cutty back.

The guy who plays Slim Charles is a member of this big go-go band here in DC. He's always hanging out at the Cheesecake Factory that's down the street from my apartment. Maybe someday I'll muster the courage to buy him a strawberry lemonade.

Understood if you don't. His voice in itself is intimidating not to mention he's a big-ass mafucka.

The Backyard Band, my favorite band of all time...I've risked getting killed many times to go see Backyard.

Does anyone get the feeling that McNulty will actually end up creating a real serial killer? It has often been said that the media coverage of the Manson murders and Manson himself ultimately created the modern serial killer phenomenon. It would be appropriate for Simon and Burns to examine it here as well.

I'm almost sure the guy who was bullying Bubs, is going to catch the rap for the serial killings.

yeah. He was at the Barack Obama rally at College Park today. After Obama spoke, I pushed my way through the crowd to meet him. Really nice guy, you should just approach him sometime, he's really cool.

Nick Sobotka! Randy Wagstaff! The most depressing show ever continues its nostalgic jaunt through failure and waste.

Episode 6 was, I thought, the best episode of the season. As with every year, the inexorable momentum that the crimes, deals, and maneuvers build up is crashing violently towards the end. Whew.

Ok now that it's been aired and already mentioned... I have a big problem with Nick showing up.

A) The Greeks are not only back in Baltimore but hanging out at their usual coffee shop

B) Nick is back on the dock out of FBI protection

Huh? Like those guys are just going to forget he almost sent them to jail for life?

Ep 8:

This was discussed earlier in the thread when the clip of Omar getting it was leaked, but it is a HUGE continuity error to have him stroll into the store with no semblance of a limp. It seems that they may be following the same formula as the Avon/Stringer storyline in season 3, with the more sympathetic character meeting his demise first, only to posthumously have a hand in bringing down his nemesis. Great cameo by Poot.

He did have a limp, it just wasn't as noticeable because of how slow he was walking. It's subtle but apparent when he turns towards the counter.

For those of you who don't have OnDemand and haven't seen episode 8 yet(don't worry, won't spoil it), and don't want to be spoiled, I recommend NOT watching the episode 9 preview. It basically gives a whole bunch of shit away and I'm kind of angry about it. Normally previews just give hints of what's coming and make you want to see it more, but this was pretty much a spoiler. Unless they were being misleading(which I don't see possible judging from the stuff we saw).

So again, if you don't want to be spoiled, DO NOT WATCH THE PREVIEW FOR EPISODE 9. You have been warned :).

Simon is even better than Chase was in swerving us with the previews. I am sure that the one scene with Michael will not go down that way.

As to episode 8, I am still in disbelief! I had to rewind that sequence at least 4 times before I came to grips with it. There are no dream sequences in The Wire so its final!

Please don't even hint at the previews or spoilers without tagging. Normally I'm not so anal but after the fucking shit storm that I just watched I don't want a single thing leaked.

I have a lot to say.

When it leaked, I fucking hated the idea. It made no sense. It was stupid. When I saw him limp into the store - I thought the same fucking thing. Actually, my first reaction was, "Oh shit, it's real! Fuck fuckity fuck. I hate this." Well, after watching the entire episode. I get it. And David Simon is so fucking smart that it almost makes me angry.

In terms of telling a compelling narrative in which Omar is sort of the hero that we all cheer for - of course it makes no sense. Omar, our anti-hero hero getting gunned down a punk ass midget bitch?

But the larger point that Simon was trying to make is not lost on me and I honestly hope it's not lost on any of you either. Kenard made the MOST sense to kill Omar, because in the grand scheme of things - Omar is no hero. He's a stickup boy who means shit. He's not to be glorified. He got cut out of the newspaper for the fire because they didn't have the space and then (for a reason I still can't figure out) his name card was replaced with the drunk cop's from the first season. So - Omar the fucking legend is gunned down by some insignifant punk, his death is not made public knowledge, nor will anyone ever know whose body it is in the afterlife. He will not even be buried properly. Because when it all comes down to it - we all built Omar up but living that kind of life leaves you ending up nowhere when you're finally "got".

And the speech Beatie made to Jimmy... that's exactly what fucking happened with Omar. Everyone hears about it and they say "Oh" but there's no one there for him. He's just gone.

That's just what I took from it anyway.

As for the rest of the episode:

The Quantico scene with McNulty was classic. "He's in the ballpark." I think Jimmy is going to turn out doing the right thing and going back with Beatie. It's amazing how it all turned out for him and how he hates himself and everything he's done. I love it.

I really liked Hayes FINALLY fucking standing up to the dumbshit editor-in-chief who seemingly accepts everything Scott writes without questioning it. It's about damn time!

I hope Kima doesn't ruin the investigation when they are so close to Marlo.

I'm very interested to see what happens with Bubs and the newspaper guy.

Nice seeing Poot.

It's very easy to see why episodes 4 and 8 weren't leaked now that they have passed.

They really painted masterstrokes with this season. It's just amazing.

You know, Mik makes some really good points, but I still don't like it. I know the show is written to be "real" and fuck it is well done, but at the same time, it is a tv show. If I wanted completely real, I'd read the newspaper. For Omar to go out that way just doesn't fit what they've built up all along with him. Shit, they had him take a four story dive earlier and come back guns blazing.

Brilliant Post Mik. But If I may, I'd like to add that Kenard is also Simon's view of America's youth. Kenard knows the legend of Omar, yet he doesn't give a fuck. You can go back to episode 6 and see this, he looked at Omar like he looked at most of the fiends, he even said "That's Omar? Many he Gimpy as a mother fucker". He wasn't impressed or intimidated like Michael and Spider ?(2 guys who also know the legend). All he seen was a weak stick up boy, with a gun. This also can be linked back too season 4, when Marlo/Old Face Andre were talking about Omar, Andre went through all this bullshit about Omar being like a terroist, Marlo listened then simply said "Omar ain't no Terroist, he just a nigga wuith a gun, and you just a nigga that got his shit took". This is basically Kenard same mentality, only on a lower scale. Chris and Snoop wee terrified of Omar, until Mike told him, he was limping around. Mike also had the same out look on Omar, he questioned Chris/Snoop on why didn't they go at Omar like they went at Junebug in episode 2. Marlo/Chris/Snoop and us the fans, put Omar on a pedestal, but in reality he was just a very good stick up boy, who became reckless and ignored his surroundings. He was so obsessed with bringing Marlo to the streets that he lost focus, he also was too cocky, he was used to kids being scared of him so he totally ignored them. When he 1st seen Mike, he just wrote him off as "just a kid". Omar went out and nobody really gave a fuck but Marlo and Bunk, Chris and Snoop might be a little salty because a kid did what they couldn't do, and not only couldn't they kill him, they went and hid after they missed their shot. It was a brilliant way too kill off the character, and I also liked how they placed it like 20 minutes in to the show.

It really was the way it had to go down. Omar is too good in his own element to get taken out, and though he became reckless he was still being clever. The Wire is trying to show how things happen, it's not trying to hype it up or make it more than it is. Omar going down in a blaze of glory might have been cool, but it would have felt out of place for this show.

Sad to see him go though.

Episode 8 was just absolutely classic.

Obviously there was the huge development of Omar finally getting capped, but even beyond that everything else was just great.

The scenes at the FBI were hilarious, as was Clay Davis in Carcetti's office

Gus finally smacking down Templeton was awesome as well.
