2GOLD Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 God dammit, the Chipmunks cleaned up. Stupid lack of family movies that don't apparently offend Christian values or something.
Ginger Snaps Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 $76 milllion for I am Legend? Is that a record for a non-holiday opening?
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 So is Will Smith officially hollywood's biggest box-office draw now?
The Buzz Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 Is there anything Will Smith did that really flopped? Bagger Vance maybe?
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 Is there anything Will Smith did that really flopped? Bagger Vance maybe? Bagger Vance flopped. Ali kind of flopped, although it did well awards wise. I Robot is his only other starring movie to not break 150 million domestically (it got to 148 or so). I still can't believe Pursuit of Happyness broke 300 mil worldwide, only Will could pull that off.
Kahran Ramsus Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 So is Golden Compass the flop of the year or not?
Guest NYankees Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 Alvin and the Chipmunks did 45 million? JESUS CHRIST!!!!!! I bet that during the cartoon heyday 20 years ago an Alvin and the Chipmunks movie wouldn't have done more than 10 million in its opening weekend.
Slayer Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 The Chipmunk Adventure, which came out Memorial Weekend 1987, pulled about 2.5M its opening weekend, which adjusts to about 4.5M today, so actually you're right The Chipmunk Adventure, however, did not have Jason Lee
Guest NYankees Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Yeah but still, The Chipmunks haven't been popular in over 20 years.
HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Who would have thought that Banky Fucking Edwards would be such a huge draw?
Slayer Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 He needs all that money for purging thetans
Open the Muggy Gate Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 At the theater I work at Alvin CLEANED UP. Nearly every show sold out. Hell, it did better than I Am Legend. Truly shocked the hell out of me. Families were coming out in droves for it. And I can't count how many people asked for "Perfect Christmas" or "This Holiday".
Gary Floyd Posted December 17, 2007 Author Report Posted December 17, 2007 I gotta say, the one thing I look forward to when posting these BO reports is bob barron telling us which movies opened to less than a million.
Conspiracy_Victim Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Is there anything Will Smith did that really flopped? Bagger Vance maybe? If you count "flop" as "box office < budget" rather than "no one came to see it" Wild Wild West finished it's run like $50 million under it's budget if I remember correctly. Six Degrees of Separation didn't do anything in the box office either, but it was intended to be more of an "arty" film rather than a huge box office monster so I think that was just Will trying to get some acting cred.
King Kamala Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Six Degrees was kind of a "small" movie and years before Will was the box office stud that he is now.
haws bah gawd Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Wild, Wild West sucked ass. I'm hoping to be able to see I Am Legend at some point this week.
RonL21 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 So is Will Smith officially hollywood's biggest box-office draw now? Samuel Jackson still is with Harrison Ford second... WHich im positive will change when Indiana Jones IV comes out next year...
RonL21 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 after some research... it appears that Eddie Murphy is actually number 1 thanks to the shrek movies im sure.. and tom hanks is number 2
JHawk Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 I'd like to see your research to back those rankings up.
ZGangsta Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 So is Will Smith officially hollywood's biggest box-office draw now? Samuel Jackson still is with Harrison Ford second... WHich im positive will change when Indiana Jones IV comes out next year... Sam Jackson? Are you kidding me? The guy's been in a shitload of movies, but that's pretty much it. Unless for some retarded reason you're counting Star Wars. If he were a huge draw then I think Snakes on a Plane wouldn't have been a miserable failure. I also call for some numbers to back up your statements. EDIT: Also, I assure you that Eddie Murphy is not what drew people to the Shrek movies.
King Kamala Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Technically speaking, voice actor Frank Welker is #1 in terms of total revenue for all of his films. http://www.the-numbers.com/people/records/ But I really doubt anybody has gone to any of his movies to see (well hear) him.

I like that list. John Ratzenberger is the #10 all time draw! Long live Cliff Claven!

Sweet, Stan Lee is 86 on that list with only 9 appearances.
bob_barron Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Bagger Vance was a critical and box office flop. It didn't get any awards. Wild Wild West and Ali both performed below expectations. I'd say Will Smith is the top box office draw in Hollywood. His last three movies have been vehicles sold on his star alone, and all have a made a ton of movie
RonL21 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 My Rankings were for North America alone
foleyfanforever88 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Question: If Will, Denzel, and Sammy J did a movie together, how much do you think it would make?
Ripper Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 I don't think you can say that Eddie Murphy wasn't the reason for the sucess of Shrek. he was the comedy of the movies. Myers was basically the straight man. I am not so sure anyone else could have pulled off Donkey the way he did and I would say that character was probably the biggest reason for the sucess of that franchise.
bob_barron Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Samuel L. Jackson being #1 is factoring in every movie he's ever made. Dude was in three Star Wars and Jurassic Park. I think Ford is tops if you add starring roles. Dreamworks marketing for Shrek 1 was a big reason why the movie was a success. It was the first computer animated film that really touted its starpower, and Eddie Murphy in family films is always a good selling point. I think a Will Smith-Denzel Washington thriller would be pretty awesome.
