Been on a Comedians of Comedy kick lately. Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Zack Galifianakis. Maria Bamford is more odd than funny. The short of Zack dropping a load on Posehns face is possibly the finest comedic creation since Jerry Lewis with an overbite. Louis CK is probably the guy who makes me laugh the hardest, though, lately. Especially when he talks about his kids so harshly.

 

I also like Joe Rogans stuff. UFC connection aside, every chance I can hear this dude talk I take. His diatribes and POVs are well stated and often are funny, though more interesting than funny. His DMT rant in particular.

What's funny to me with Louis CK is when he tells some of his stories about his wife and kids, I can almost 100% relate to it. Half the time I'm like "man I know exactly what you mean!"

 

It's also uncanny to know that he has a man crush on Ewan McGregor because I also have a man crush on Ewan McGregor!

My girlfriend recently got me into some Stephen Lynch stuff. This guy is totally FUCKED UP, but his songs are great. I caught myself humming "Damn That's An Ugly Baby" the other day at work.

I had my first live standup experience tonight (just got home a while ago, around 3:30 A.M.) at a club in Riverside called In Cahoots. Headliner was a dude named Shang who has been on Comedy Central, HBO, BET, etc. You can check him out at http://www.iamshang.com, but the shit on his site doesn't even do him justice. Dude was the funniest person I've ever heard, period.

St. Louis area has a great comedy scene with several open-mics available to up-and-coming comics...there's the Fairview Heights Funny Bone in Illinois on Sunday nights(except for tonight of course), St. Peters Comedy Forum on Monday nights, and the Westport Funny Bone on Tuesdays. http://www.rooftopcomedy.com has a great collection of clips from open-mic shows and other performances around the country...look under "Patrick Brandmeyer" to see my stuff.

Since I did 45 minutes at my first ever performance, made a name for myself in Portland, moved to LA and went from doing three minutes at the open mic nights to getting paid to do the mainstage at The Comedy Store three months later, opening for Bobby Lee, you fucking hater.

 

I do occasional open mics, and would like to get more into it, although right now I have more pressing concerns. As soon as I have more free time, I'll be writing more material and looking to expand.

I don't have any clips, and wouldn't show them if I did, but my material is mostly based around personal anecdotes and how I hate everything. A lot of it is stories I've told here. The one about me fucking the 13 year old is usually the closer, people seem to like that.

 

My favorite comics/influences: Doug Stanhope, Louis CK, Jim Norton, David Cross.

Sorry... I'm really touchy about it. It's like you can't be a comedian and also be on the internet. Nobody believes you. Anyway, you're actually right. Everytime I tell someone what I do, it's a lot of "me too." And I inquire further, and it's a lot of "Well I wrote some stuff" or "I did an open mic one time" or "I hosted a Battle of the Bands at my youth group."

One thing I found funny was in the middle of his bits, he'd occasionally just tell some old chestnut like the one about the kid who puts chocolate on his face, gets beaten and says "I've been black for five minutes and I already hate you white motherfuckers."

Nice. It's always disapointing when a legend comes with a set he's been doing since the 80's. Or even the 90's. I guess Mooney's shit is the type that has to stay current.

BTW, as for Mooney's statements that he would no longer use the N word, which I don't think he's rescinded, he did pretty well with that, although he did say it once, referring to UPN as the "you pick a nigger" network.

I saw him about two years ago. He was with two other guys and it was like Kings of Comedy, where he was MC and talked for like ten minutes before and after each act. The guys he performed around(one is a regular on Best Week Ever) were a lot funnier. Charlie was trying to do bits, when he should have just stuck to his True Hollywood Stories.

 

Man, I wish Norton or Louie CK would come down here.

On 77 stage appearances and counting...first stage appearance was just under two years ago(June of '06). I had never even set foot in a comedy club prior to May of '06, amazingly enough.

As such, I think I'm very rough around the edges and unpolished. I'm hoping that going out to comedy clubs and immersing myself in the environment a lot will help even me out.
