Guest College Party Report post Posted May 7, 2008 No, it's not fair, actually. What was the justification for serpentine drafting in the music thread? Whatever it was, it didn't make a lick of sense.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 So you're saying it's fair that you end up with the 16th pick in each round? Wouldn't it make more sense that you get the 16th pick in the odd rounds and 4th in the even ones? There's a reason why there aren't any serpentine drafts in professional sports, cause the normal one is to improve bad teams. We don't have teams.
Guest Report post Posted May 7, 2008 Serpentine drafts are great. I got Magic, now I have to wait my turn to grab another player, while everyone else gets better second round guys. It's only fair. Well, better is a subjective term. As long as you guys don't pick him, I feel like I'm going to get someone that's better than almost everyone else picked in this round.
Guest College Party Report post Posted May 7, 2008 It doesn't make things fairer. So if we have twenty people, then the first person goes, then has to wait 38 positions before picking two. Why not just wait 19 before picking one? I don't understand how it levels the playing field. It's already as level as choosing up sides can be.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 No, because the benefit of drafting earlier is offset by having to draft later in other rounds. Yes, that's the whole point. The reason he has to wait 38 instead of 19 before making another pick is because he got to pick before everyone else. Number 19 had to wait for 18 people to choose before him. How is that fair for number 19 that he has to pick after 18 people all the time?
Guest College Party Report post Posted May 7, 2008 Maybe I'm not enough of a fantasy sports douchebag to be familiar with the serpentine draft concept, but I don't see how it really makes things fair. The draft process is inherently unfair, so you might as well just go in order and start back at the top. So I draft 16, 36, 56. That's fine. You're picking after the same number of people on average anyway.

You're picking after the same number of people on average anyway. The serpentine is supposed to be of the effect that the first team gets a 5 star player and a 3 star player while the last team gets two 4 star players. In the regular draft it would be more like the first team getting a 5 star player and a top 4 star player while the last team gets a low 4 star player and a 3 star player. Something like that. AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 I don't really understand your frustration at this concept, Czech. If you're last in the draft order, wouldn't you much rather have the "worst" player available in the first round and the "best" player available in the second as opposed to the "worst" player available in both rounds? Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 7, 2008 Jerry West is a great pick. I was wondering why the hell there was such a run on modern day players in this round. As long as you guys don't pick him, I feel like I'm going to get someone that's better than almost everyone else picked in this round. Not if we're thinking of the same guy and I happen to pick him before you do. Everything is going to go pretty whack after Round 4, I can just tell right now. Oh, and as for my weighing in to the serpentine draft debate, this will be the first time I can say this in a while, but I agree with Czech in this. I had the fortune of selecting second in the NBA Fantasy, first in the MLB Fantasy, and last in the Desert Island thread in music- all serpentine drafts, so I was the beneficiary of multiple picks within a short time span. This is the thing that's basically wrong with serpentine drafts, IMO. It gives preference to the people picking towards the very beginning in some rounds, and towards the very end in the other rounds. Doing it the other way gives an even amount of picks every round, and while I get Cena's point here There's a reason why there aren't any serpentine drafts in professional sports, cause the normal one is to improve bad teams. We don't have teams. This point by AboveAverage is debateable- If you're last in the draft order, wouldn't you much rather have the "worst" player available in the first round and the "best" player available in the second as opposed to the "worst" player available in both rounds? This is not necessarily true, if you consider how NFL teams that draft well do their business. If you get the "worst" player available in the first round, you treat it like a high second rounder and pick the best player available (or trade down in their case, although we're not doing that). There's an even amount of room between each pick- it's more than fair, at least after the first round.
