2008 MMA Year End Review

Recommended Posts

I'm going to take this Fight of the Year candidate thread and move it to the end of the year awards section at the top of the board.

Use this thread to add discussion on whatever you wish about MMA in 2008... here are my suggestions.

- Fight of the Year

- Fighter of the Year

- Breakthrough fighter of the year

- Best Card of the Year

- Worst fight of the year

- Worst card of the year

- Best submission

- Best knockout

Talk about the year where BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre, Forrest Griffin, Antonio Nogueira (sorta) and Brock Lesnar all became UFC champs, the rise and fall of Kimbo/EliteXC, Fedor demolishing Timmay and whatever else you want.

Thanks to our awesome MOD for doing this thread up proper.

This is something that we as a group can discuss but what are the feelings for spoiler tags being utilized in this thread? Yeah, anybody can go look up the result on Sherdog but if it's a fight people don't know the finish of they might want to come into this thread not wanting to know. What should we do? Spoiler fights or maybe just spoiler-tag what the result is?

Even though I haven't seen the fight since first viewing I'm throwing down Sam Stout vs Rich Clementi from UFC 83. This nomination can (and will) be chalked up to me witnessing it live but this fight was insane. It's a shame that when the DVD was released they won't show entrances as both were choice with Rich coming down to "Here comes the rain" by Eurythmics and Stout coming out to his Eminem theme.

The first round started off badly for Sam as Rich took him down and got mount very quickly but wasn't doing much damage. Crowd was just going off the chain with "Stout" chants and when Sam finally escaped the pop was on par with anything that went down that night and yes, I'm including GSP's win over Serra. Clementi however held his own standing, cracking Sam with punches and even landing a beautiful spinning back fist. Clearly Rich's round.

The next two rounds were action-packed with Rich trying (and sometimes succeeding) at getting Stout down but he wasn't able to do much in the way of damage but controlled well. In the third round Stout went for the kill, hurting Clementi with body shots and hooks to the head with one body shot in particular making the crowd go apeshit as Sam tried to finish No Love but wasn't able to close the deal.

This was a great fight, no lull in the action with Clementi more then holding his own with the stand-up and Stout showing his improved ground defense with escaping the mount. Add in a super-hot crowd and you have a FOTYC.

I am having a hard time coming up with a choice I can solidly get behind, at this point. I've been thoroughly entertained by MMA this year but I am having a hard time singling out a FOTY - they aren't jumping out at you like last year.

I'm thinking others are in the same boat, which is why we haven't had much action.

Eddie Alvarez vs. Joachim Hansen: DREAM3

Both fighters known for their knockout power. Alvarez starts it off by dropping Hansen within the first 30 seconds, but Hansen refuses to stay down. It remains a theme throughout the bout. Alvarez constantly peppering Hansen with shots, dropping him another time in the first round. But it's not a rout...Hansen is also hitting Alvarez with his fair share of punches. Super entertaining first round with banging back and forth and neither fighter giving an inch.

Second round: Alvarez and Hansen will going at it full tilt but Joachim catches Alvarez in a beautiful armbar that's in deep but Alvarez pops out and celebrates immediately because it was CLOSE. They keep going at it until the bell and Alvarez catches Hansen with a beautiful headkick right at the end of the fight that lands solid on the neck/lower chin and then follows it up with one good shot.

Post-match: Each fighter congratulates the other and each win over the Japanese crowd with loud ovations.

Great fight. Unfortunately the only video I can find is the Japanese feed.

Props to Alvarez, I thought Hansen would out-hustle him in the fight but I was wrong. With his drop to LW and the wins that have followed it Eddie is certainly doing his best to be a top-five ranked fighter by the end of the year which he most certainly be if be beats Kawijiri/Uno/Aoki.

Speaking of, I'm predicting Aoki/Alvarez and Uno/Kawijiri for the third round. DREAM for sure wants either Jiri or Shiya in the finals and that's the safest way of going about it.

Faber v. Pulver - WEC

EDIT:

The young hungry lion vs. The crafty veteren. Faber, known for his wrestling, shocks and pleases the crowd instantly with his newly displayed striking ability. Pulver is game, but takes a lot of punishment early. Eventually Pulver does connect with a couple of shots that remind Faber why Pulver is a legend in this weightclass. In the end though, Faber proves to be, too fast, too young and too strong, and wins the biggest fight of his career. The crowd was electric, and Pulver was damn respectful afterwards in his post fight interview and hey the shout out to his pregnant wife didn't hurt either. As an MMA fan this was everything a title fight should be and as someone who often tries to get other people into MMA, these are two classy guys I would point them in the direction towards.

In front of a sellout crowd in his hometown, Main Eventing on the biggest card in the history of WEC. It was everything a Main Event on a grand stage should be.

better?

I preferred Torres vs. Maeda from that card. Which is currently my FOTY. It had more variation, plus it had THE HATE~! which Pulver/Faber didn't have. I still think Pulver/Faber was epic, which is something we don't really see nowadays, but I was more excited by the 135 bout.

I think the Pulver/Faber fight epitomizes everything that a fight should be: Respect for your opponent, good clean fighting, technically sound performances from both fighters, a hot crowd, belt on the line. Yeah, as much as I liked Torres/Maeda, this was fight of the year. It's guys like Jens and Urijah I can point to and say, "These are the athletes that represent this sport," not sideshows like Kimbo, or trash talking assholes, or guys who suffer from some kind of macho-sociological disorder and only enter the sport to prove their masculinity and/or hurt people.

Big, BIG ups to Jens and Faber.

Hazelett Vs. Burkman was a great fight...

Burkman showed he improved his stand up a lot, as he went toe to toe with a pretty good striker in Hazelett... And when Burkman took him down, Hazelett would throw almost every submission in the book, and executing a perfect rubber guard preventing Burkman from doing any damage from top position, aside from the last miniute in the 1st round. Burkman himself in the 1st round displayed some good submission defense, fending off many near attempts from McLovin...

Near the end of the 2nd round, Hazelett busted Burkman with some kicks, fucking up his eye... And then eventually scrambling Burkman into one of the slickest armbars I've ever seen.

IMO McLovin has 2 FOTY Candidates with both Burkman and Koscheck this year... It's hard to imagine he's only 1 fucking year older then I am.

Yeah, Hazlett has looked good this year. I picked up 82 last night and I'm not sure if the Koscheck fight will hold up when it's all said and done at the years end but damn that was a fun fight to watch.

Oh dude, you need to see Eddie Alvarez vs Joachim Hansen from the DREAMS tourney if you're thinking Horn/Nate was FOTY quality. It's not a bad fight by any means but like I said, check the above-mentioned fight and you'll see a step up in quality.

Kawajiri/Alvarez. Alvarez is right on the verge of being a wild brawler but he just manages to keep that measure of control in his strikes to make his fights tons of fun to watch. Kawajiri, as usual, is down for a slug fest.

Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura. People said that this brought Condit's stock down, but I'm not in that camp. It showed Condit's toughness and what he can do when pushed by someone; Miura's no stiff. Reffing in this one was pretty shitty with obvious favoritism being showed to the champ, but what are ya gonna do, ya know?
