They are 12th in the league in ERA, in a pitchers' park. Their staff is 15th out of 16 teams in walking batters. On the offensive side, they rate first in home runs and slugging percentage, but 14th in drawing walks and 12th in OBP. I would assume that their hitting success will wane as their hacking style catches up to them. Unfortunately, the Phillies' staff isn't the type to exploit that, except maybe Moyer on the mound tonight (14 up, 14 down as of this writing). Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Gallardo's injury seemingly erased them from contention in the minds of many, but they've been playing better and with the spotlight off of them, I can see them making a run. Considering how horrid the bullpen was last season, and the only major addition was Matt Wise who has so far spent more time ON the DL than off of it, he made a miscalculation of gigantic proportions. And Wagner, Wagner, Wagner. Now three consecutive blown saves. His record was five for Houston back in 2000. At the very least, maybe he can add a milestone to his career this year. They'll have to do it with assloads of scoring, like they did today, because I don't trust their pitching beyond Ben Sheets (who has been awesome this year), and Ned Yost will figure out ways to cost them close games. Hart/Braun/Fielder/Cameron are scary, though, and not just scary as in "Corey Hart has an ass for a face." I think they'll win 83 at worst. Realistically speaking, it's either the D-Bags or the Dodgers coming out of the West. This is not to boast about things. Rather, I notice that all six divisions and even the wild card race have clear leaders. The BoSox have pulled ahead of the Rays. The White Sox went on a tear. The Angels established a five game lead. The Cubs are well ahead. The Dbacks have stumbled but the West is sub-.500. Scott Olsen I think may become a very good pitcher if he ever leaves Florida. Of course with Cantu and Hanley Ramirez behind him, and Luis Gonzalez in left, his defense is awful. Besides that, he looks very uncomfortable pitching in the heat. By the end of the game, he was DRENCHED in sweat to the point where it was pouring off the brim of his hat. The same thing happened in a Phillies/Marlins game last year. That was the first 3 games of the Reds/Phil matchup, the Braves were playing at home, and the Mets were facing San Fran.
