Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2008 I've been hearing more and more about this book series, and heard thre was a movie comming out for the first book. Today I saw the trailer for Twilight- and ye gods, it looks horrible. My cousin is of the mind that it's a great book that will be turned into a lousy movie, ad so far I'm agreeing with her. Anybody here either read the books and/or are looking froward to the movie?
the max 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2008 The girlfriend likes the books. I hope she doesn't find out there's a movie now. I just watched the trailer. Had to sift through fucking awful vidfiction with evanescence songs to get the "official" trailer. It's "The Lost Boys" for girls. Great.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 A movie made entirely by people whose careers I'm unfamiliar with, adapted from an apparently popular series of books I've never heard of, with a shitty trailer, and it dares to steal the title from a movie made only ten years ago in which Reese Witherspoon got naked. I seriously doubt we'll get such fanservice here. ::actually looks at the synopsis:: ...and it's a forbidden love story between a human and a goddamned vampire ...sigh ...yes I will watch it. DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 But the vampire is out in the day. I don't get it. Maybe it's based on the lore set by Dracula: The Series in which vampires can walk around in the daytime, they just have no powers while doing do. The Reese Witherspoon "Twilight" was the first thing I thought of too.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 That's from the original Dracula novel. He could walk around during daylight, at least when he was well-fed. Sunlight didn't kill him, it just weakened his powers.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Oh. Wikipedia made it sound like that was some new age thing for Lucard running a major company during the day. Ah, rich business man Dracula. Good times, that series was.
Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Well, the vampire flew and stopped a car with his bare hand in daylight, so apparently the powrs weren't weakened too much...
Maztinho 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 All I know is one day a couple months ago I was bored and turned on the college radio station while I was cleaning house and the Morning Brew of two chicks gushing over these novels and the guy calling them Emotional Porn for Chicks makes me want to avoid this like death. One of the chicks agreed that they basically are Emotional Porn, the other was being bitchy and wouldn't go that far. And they talked about the movie coming out sometime later in the year. Isn't there some sort of love triangle with a Werewolf tossed in there for shits and giggles too? It's like Underworld, but with a Love Triangle instead of the Romeo and Juliet slant. Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Comparing this travesty to Interview with the Vampire? ...Ew. That should be a crime, or something. There's no way in hell this bullshit even comes close to being of the same caliber as IwtV.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 It's like Interview with a Vampire for the Myspace generation, only a lot less gay and a lot more soap opera angst. So it's like Laurell K. Hamilton, but with PG-13 content? Gotcha. At least the sex scenes will be shorter.
Rob Anybody 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 But the vampire is out in the day. I don't get it. From Wikipedia: Author Stephenie Meyer admits to not having researched vampire mythology before writing Twilight. Thus, vampires in the Twilight world are different from any other literary vampires. One fact is that they have no weaknesses—they are not harmed by holy water, garlic, stakes, crosses, or even the sun. They do however, remain hidden during daylight hours or reside in highly clouded areas to avoid being seen in direct sunlight due to the fact that they sparkle like crystals under its rays., even though they could easily conquer, kill, or control any who see them. They need no invitation to enter one's home, they have a reflection in mirrored surfaces, and they show up on film. They are incapable of sleep and require no rest whatsoever. Their teeth are sharp as blades but do not elongate or become fangs and their venom gives off a smell which is alluring to humans, as if their inhuman beauty wasn't enough, or their special talents and abilities enough to hunt any prey they wish without a need for bait. It is also a topic of debate whether or not they lose their souls upon becoming immortal, or if God even exists in the Twilight universe. The actual quote about vampire canon is "I wasn't very familiar with the canon, in any case, because I don't read horror novels (ironic, I know). So I didn't cut out fangs and coffins and so forth as a way to distinguish my vampires; that's just how they came to me", after stating "So I'm not at all informed about the horror genre, and I don't think it's influenced my writing." Yep.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 How can any living person not be aware of a vampire's basic weaknesses? I thought it was common knowledge you learn as a kid.
Maztinho 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 The more I hear about this series the more I want people to die. I mean Vampire weaknesses are basic shit. BASIC! You don't have to be a "horror fan" to know that they don't like sunlight.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 That just gave me a great idea for a dish washing soap ad. Too bad I'm not in advertising, I imagine the "Sunlight" people would pay me thousands to make a commercial about someone warding off Dracula with the power of dish soap. On the subject of vampires, The Movie Network has a movie available to watch called "Bitten" starring Jason Mewes of all people. Anyone know anything about it? IMDb seemingly has never heard of it. Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 I've read books before where the normal Vampire weaknesses either weren't there or were largeely diluted. One book series (maybe by RL Stein?) had the Vampire able to go out during the day, but her powers were greatly diminished. As for the movie, a little research shows that Edward is being played by the kid that played Cedric Diggory in Goblet of Fire; and the girl playing Bella has ben in a few more well-known movies like Jumper, Into the Wild, Zathura, and Cold Creek Manor.
