Alternate movie draft

Bubba HoTep -Coscarelli 2002

A great oddball premise made even better by the strange dignity that Coscarelli, Davis, and surprisingly even Campbell bring to the "out there" characters and script. A very enjoyable and funny movie with more heart and emotional weight than you'd expect given the subject matter; I can't say I've seen another movie that works quite like this one. I can also honestly say that I haven't seen a finer tribute to Elvis really.

I think YNA had to drop out, so that would make it Blade's pick.

Edit: I thought he dropped out, but maybe it was just for moving day?

gotta bow out again, moving day

The Princess Bride - Reiner - 1987

It's a magical movie that I could watch over and over again... it's quite quotable, and the performances can't help but make you smile. It's probably Cary Elwes' best performance if you ask me.

Since I need to laugh on my island:

Coming To America (1988, John Landis)

Eddie Murphy's funniest movie (for my money) and, by far, his best attempt at playing multiple characters. He's helped immeasurably by the hilarious Arsenio Hall and John Amos, who nearly steals the show. Probably, my favorite comedy ever.

Nice! I think that may have been my first favorite movie. Pretty dirty for a six year old, but whatever. Probably my favorite joke at that age was "The royal penis is clean, your highness." Or possibly "Most amusing, sire. ROYAL WIPERS!"

ghostbusters_movie_poster.jpg

Ghostbusters, Reitman, 1984

I was obsessed with Ghostbusters when I was a kid, even though the first movie came out three years before I was born. I had the toys, watched the cartoon, and dressed as a ghostbuster for Halloween on more than one occasion. I also watched the movie almost everyday. How could I not have this movie on my island? It was always a great movie when I was little, but it's one of those movies that gets better later on when you're older as you actually start to get all the jokes.

One of my favorite jokes from the movie...

Gozer shows up

Venkman: Go get her, Ray!

With my 4th pick, I select:

Training Day/2001/Antoine Fuqua

Upon multiple viewings, I am still impressed by Denzel's character. Badass but cool. Dickhead, bullshitter, everytime you think he may have some sense of decency he stoops lower. One of my faves.

Alright, cool.

Spirited Away

I have to have at least one animated feature, and while there's another one I'm eying I definitely need to get some Miyazaki first. This is just gorgeous to look at, and proof that hand-drawn animation can still be every bit as beautiful and awe-inspiring as CGI. Plus, I've got so many things with downer endings I need something to counterbalance it.

You fuckin' bastard!

Anyway...

Jaws

Just a perfectly made film. I'm something of an aquaphile, and I own shark week dvds, and I guess this movie is probably why. All three leads rule, but particularly Robert Shaw. I totally dig the mayor too. I often talk about "watching that little Kintner boy spill out all over the dock".

Ok, now I'm going to pick again, and we start serpentine order. If this is wrong, don't quit the draft, just correct me.

robocop_poster.jpg

Robocop

Without a doubt, the movie I quote the most (but Spaceballs is second... you fuckin' bastard). "Just gimme my fuckin' phone call." "I had to kill Bob Morton because he made a mistake." "Oh, fuck Jones!" See, these are not even memorable lines, and I still quote them.

I quoted Robocop a couple days ago. "Has anyone ever had pet names for you, Dave?" "Yeah. My old girlfriend used to like to call me funny names. Iron BUTT. Boner. Once she even called me... asshole."

And yeah, it's a great superviolent dystopian satire. Love it.

Yikes, burned twice in a row with Robocop and Raiders (probably my next pick). Robocop is a funny story for me. The first time I saw it was when I was about 5-6 years old, but I watched the edited version shown on TV. We actually taped it, minus commercials, and that was the version I watched a lot when I was a kid. Years later, I was exposed to the REAL version. It was pretty shocking what I had missed.

I have a friend who loves imitating the first part of the movie when Murphy gets his arm blown off.

A lot of inspiration for my shock/cringe humor is from that scene. Even at like 7 years old, I would just die laughing at Kurtwood Smith ("You probably don't think I'm a very nice guy." - look in a dictionary under stoneface. And "Well, give the man a hand!") while still being disturbed by the sadistic violence.
