The Sabres killed the Islanders yesterday afternoon 7-1. The Islanders. Look. Awful.

And there was this piece of awesomeness:

Fairly lackluster in terms of a brawl, but what a good way to kick off hockey season.

And like Rivet needs any help in fighting.

What I liked about it was the way the 3 fights seemed to wait until each was over to begin. They seperate the Rivet fight...and Kaleta immediately slams his guy...then when they get them up...Mair and his guy finally throw down. It was all very well choreographed.

Also...due to the angle that the video started at it's actually Rivet who jumped in on Mair's intital fight, not Mair helping him out. He got 2 game misconducts for it (3rd man in and fighting after there was another fight started(or however they word that one))

Why was Sabertooth there? And if the Islanders are going to have a mascot, they should get their own instead of barrowing one from an AFL team.

I barely follow competitive sports these days, but I'm gonna try and keep up with the Blackhawks this season... looks like things are not off to a good start, though... :(

Also, after further thinking about it: Fuck Sean Avery again. How the hell could anyone not like Iginla? In my opinion, he should be the most marketed player in the league after Ovechkin (yes, ahead of Crosby. I've got the basis of my case lined up, but I'm tired, and can better defend it in the morning, after the potential backlash). He brings something to the table for every fan, and every potential fan: He's a classy guy, a great leader, he scores, he sets up goals, he fights, he hits, he's a minority.

Yes, his fight in the second period is what prompted this rant.

Edit: Ok, maybe not ahead of Crosby, but it's close. Crosby's personality seems so store-bought. Every interview I've seen with him, he's given cookie-cutter answers. How would a 21-year-old act or talk away from the cameras? Showcase that. I don't mean to the degree that got Tiger Woods in hot water in 96, but to me, what makes Ovechkin so likeable is not just his scoring prowess or dynamic style of play on the ice, but his enthusiasm and fun nature. I'm also a tremendous advocate for the power forward, so maybe I'm a little biased. On the other hand, Crosby's more of a playmaker to me, and Brett Hull is more a household name than Adam Oates.

I was going to say- Matt Young sure posts a lot about Kings games that no one cares about.

Looking forward to Canucks-Wings tomorrow. Hopefully we get the Canucks from last weekend, and not the team that came out flat against the Caps

I stopped doing Bruins play by play for the same reason. By and large, people don't really care.

Brett Hull is more a household name, but he was more marketable than Oates because he was someone who never shut his fucking mouth (and still doesn't). Oates was a better player though. Between Crosby and Ovechkin, Ovechkin's more marketable and is arguably the better overall player. Crosby's a better two-way player now, but Ovechkin has been working more and more on his defensive game plus he hits people harder than most defensemen. I think in two or three years, Ovechkin will be the best all-around player in the NHL.

I'd just like to know when Brandon Dubinsky is going to get young-superstar-of-the-future praise. He's an excellent hockey player. His line with Zherdev and Voros on the wings has 19 points so far this season, that's ridiculous through 5 games.

I'm very frightened of the Rangers right now. I realise the season's only essentially a week old, but look at the league leaders: Voros and Dubinsky each have seven points, Gomez, Zherdev, and Girardi each have five. That's a balanced attack. I'm sure they'll cool off, but they still have the league's second-best goalie. Worst of all? I feel there's three teams in, or expected to be in, the upper echelon of the East: New York, Pittsburgh, and Montreal. New York and Pittsburgh split the season series last year, and save a twenty-minute brain fart, New York beat up Montreal all season. The Sens collapse last year notwithstanding, New York's going to be on a seven-game win streak by the weekend. They'll be in the driver's seat for a while.

People bitch that I don't post in baseball threads, claiming that I "only show up for the playoffs." Then I get bitched at for actually participating. Go fuck yourself.

The Rangers have killed all 23 penalties they've had this year—the two primary killers being Dubinsky and Callahan. As lost as Dubinsky sometimes get in conversation among great young players, Ryan Callahan gets even less credit because his best skill is back-checking. He's been the Rangers best defensive forward this year.
