Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Gouveia is the new Joe Riggs, a supposed monster in the gym but can't put it together in the fights. Marquardt though looked very good, ever since the Silva loss he's been a machine. Terry Etim's striking looks better all the time. If his grappling and takedown defence ever catch up he could be a force in a few years time. AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 Diego did very well against a guy who was a title contender a little more than a year ago, I don't see any reason why he should go back up to 170. I like Sanchez because he was very calm and never became impatient by hurrying to finish Joe or land a big shot. He just sat back and let Joe come at him because he knew exactly what he was getting from him the entire fight: a boxing match. Marquardt looked huge against Gouveia, and Gouveia is the one who was dropping down in weight! Props to Wilson for lasting as long as he did, because Nate was throwing some powerful shots at him throughout the entire fight. Maia was very, very impressive. Very slick triangle he put on Chael. The card itself was good enough for what it was. While there were no fights that are particularly memorable, there weren't any that were boring or technically poor or unsound. ravman77 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 I was there last night. Good show but the 02 was well under capacity. Rows of empty seats around us and the arena in general. I'd be surprised if they put on another card there any time soon, especially with Dublin being such a success. I'm amazed that the 02 has had 3 shows now and major cities like Liverpool, Glasgow and Sheffield haven't. Went to see Joe Rogan the night before and met Marcus Davis and BJ afterwards. Both nice blokes and happy to pose for a photo. Even managed to give BJ a kiss on the head. It was like a furry little peach. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 Diego didn't look bad, but he didn't look good enough to take on the divisions top 3 (Sherk, Kenny, BJ). He was getting hit with straight rights the whole night, and while Joe's stand up doesn't suck, it's not as good as the top 3. Plus it looked like Diego didn't have any power in his strikes. I am loving the fight nights. They are essentially WWF Superstars, meant to highlight certain fighters. Cept you get the odd upset or two, and a few competitive matches as well. Marquardts Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo combo at the end was hilarious. Damian Maia. I really have nothing to say besides that triangle set up was damn near pornographic. Struve got worked by JDS. The best parts of Stevenson/Sanchez were during the scrambles, and that usually is where Diego is most entertaining. Diego vs. Nate would work on several levels - both TUF winners, Diego already beat Nates brother, and stylistically they could make for a good ground battle. Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 Diego's wrestling isn't getting any better, and unless he plans on outstriking guys for 15 minutes with his T-Rex arms and hoping no one realizes he still doesn't defend leg kicks, he'd best hope that the cut doesn't affect his ability to otherwise go apeshit for 15 minutes. Not Guida, not Florian, not Sherk, not Griffin, and not Penn. Diego can fight Frankie Edgar. How about that for a money fight? At 170, Diego has the speed advantage over guys, had the aggression (depending on which version of Diego goes into the fight) and had the power. Last night, Diego kept hitting Stevenson over and over with power shots and uppercuts. Stevenson looked like he was getting hit with pillows. Diego lost all his power dropping down to 155, didn't have that much of a speed advantage over Stevenson and will still have the same problems with wrestlers, especially at this weight division. Though I agree with the rest of your points. The notion that fighting at the lowest possible weight class you can torture your body into is always for the best is flawed. This isn't the case of an overrated Vera fighting Reese which I'm assuming most of are trying to compare. Sanchez fought a top 10 level LW, and beat him to a clear desicion. So what, he didn't steamroll over him... I think that most more to do with the talnet level of Stevenson more so then Sanchez being bad at 155. Maybe if he fought the Matt Bocek's, Kyle Bradley's, or Dennis Siver's of the division and he didn't destroy them you would have a point... But that isn't the case. I think he at the very least deserves another chance to show himself at 155 before everyone starts jumping to the conclusion, "he can't handle it at 155"...
