  1. Man, that SNES sure was bullshit. I'm in no way hoping for, or advocating, a return to Nintendo dominance. The NES was, a few dozen gems aside, often a brutal wasteland of terrible games. SNES v. Genesis--that was fantastic. Two extremely competitive consoles with great games and great 3rd party support. A big part of it was Sega kicking Nintendo's ass for a part of the era. And what the hell are you talking about, painting a picture of Sony riding in on a white horse with the Playstation? Nintendo wasn't even in the picture, if you forget (N64 was late to the party). Sony saved us from Sega's complete, ****ing incompetence. I was immensely glad to buy a Playstation after being the unfortunate owner of a 32X and a (secondhand) Sega CD. In a roundabout way, Sega's incompetence is to blame for N64. Nintendo had a major paranoia over disc-based media, because they saw how it turned out for their competition. It's a big reason they went with the non-standard Gamecube discs. Not that I'm not saying the N64 was a disaster. It was. We know how well carts went over for the 3Ps. However, have some perspective here. It was nothing compared to the leadership of the lobotomized chimps running Sega then. Sega went from NUMBER 1 one generation, to two failed semi-systems, and a console that was dead on arrival in the United States. Although, Nintendo has a lot of blind loyalty going for it. Many older gamers happily remember the good times with the NES (and almost none of the bad). Being a retro-gamer often means gushing big-time over NES releases. On the other hand, how many die-hard Atari fans, or even Sega fans do you come across on the web? Not too many. Nintendo often gets love for being "old school," even if the golden years fans fondly remember resulted from Yamauchi selling his soul for his company's success.

Damn now you got me wishing there had been VB Zelda. Yeah it would have hurt like hell, but it could have been awesome. Smues: Still waiting to ship his 2 Virtual Boys up to Alaska. Glad there wasn't. Or else I'd have had to get one and make my eyes even worse. That would be hella lot of long hours.
  3. Yeah, Guitar Hero 80's was just announced. It's entirely possible that it's just going to be the downloadable content to be included for 360 GH2, but right now no one knows for sure.
  4. Namco didn't make a good Starfox game, either. And I *liked* Star Fox Adventures, damnit. Of course, making another gameplay style that sucks has been a common practice since the 8-bit days, but are most common with shooters.
  5. A game 2 hardware generations in the making!
  6. Oh. Yawn. Carry on.
  7. It's the bad crossover fanfiction generator!! : http://www.kaction.com/badfanfiction/ "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Teen Titans and the Legend of Zelda . The story should use alternate dimensions as a plot device!" -Easy. Post Majora's Mask, that Link ends up not in Hyrule, but in whereever the hell the TT are. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining James Bond and Metal Gear Solid . The story should use hypnosis as a plot device!" -For a Metal Gear Solid plot, that has to be incredibly mundane. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Friday the 13th and Ah! My Goddess . The story should use angst as a plot device!" -Too funny... "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Metroid and the Little Mermaid . The story should use car accidents as a plot device!" -...seems a little tricky... "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Silent Hill and Twilight Zone . The story should use alternate dimensions as a plot device!" -That COULD actually work. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Emeril Legasse and Wheel of Fortune . The story should use possesion by Satan as a plot device!" -Too easy. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Donkey Kong and Metal Gear Solid . The story should use becoming the President as a plot device!" -No need to go overboard with realism. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Monster Garage and Spongebob Squarepants . The story should use anal sex as a plot device!" - A Deliverance parody? Just with nicer vehicles? "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Duke Nukem and Professional Wrestling . The story should use brainwashing as a plot device!" -Vince: You haven't defended your championship belt for 11 years, Duke! YEEER FIRED!! I don't think you can possibly come up with something for Metal Gear Solid that doesn't seem plausible.
  8. My guess: Eight Days. Any and all news on that project has ceased.
  9. News, although whether it's good or bad depends on how you look at it: http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumors/ghostbuste...rmed-228996.php
  10. I don't think he knew what he was talking about, since I understand the concept of a loss-leader, but if the system isn't selling well, he still might be right. I'm curious to know what everyone else thinks. Every Sony division last year was bleeding money. Only Playstation division made money. But frankly, the PS2 isn't going away. It's still going to sell millions and make buttloads of cash. Major release coming out this year on PS2: Rogue Galaxy Winning Eleven 2007 (also on 360, PSP, and DS, though) Lumines Plus Tomb Raider Anniversary God of War II Persona 3 Samurai Warriors 2 Empires Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI Guitar Hero: 80's Edition Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix (with Chain of Memories remake) Madden '08 That's obviously not counting unannounced/rumored titles, and original games that we don't know much about now. Obviously, it's looking the rosiest for RPG players, though.
  11. FWIW, ED is an awesome game. Did he wear a ridiculous rubber mask of the appropriate Gamepro character?
  12. Precisely. But that's pretty much any game system. And for all of the nostalgia there is for the NES, it had some of the most ****ing terrible games ever made on it, and lots of them.
  13. Just finally got there? Taking our time, I see. Yeah, it's so great that I'm rather disappointed the Spinner isn't utilized more.
  14. I already hate FFVII for existing. But if I didn't, I'd agree. Much better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnABKuHbfpA
  15. "And for the Square Enix fans, look forward to Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix, previously thought to be a Japan-only upgrade, to arrive here in the fall, complete with the Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories 3D remake. That's one hell of an 'extra.'" Source: 1up, EGM
  16. Yeah, I assumed that was the case, but not everyone knows its popularity. Everyone's heard of it, but not everyone knows just how well it sells. Plenty of PSP owners are allegedly pissed at how that version of the game is *STILL* stuck in limbo when it was announced before PSP launch.
  17. No, but the PS2 had plenty of crappy games on the console, plus whatever solid games they had, they were also released on the Xbox. Playstation came out a year early, and it really took Microsoft nearly two years to become a credible system. At the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005, most games were made for the Xbox (minus EA those assholes) and crappier versions of say Splinter Cell were released to the PS2 and Gamecube. (I have no qualms with GC. The layout design of the controller blew ass, but had a lot of fun games). Other than RPG games, is there anything else that is PS2 or PS3 exclusive? Are you honest to God saying that PS2 had an issue with its GAME LIBRARY?! And that XBox got all of the "solid" games? That's so blatantly wrong it isn't even funny. And picking Splinter Cell as being vastly superior on Xbox is ridiculousy biased. That's one of the, oh, 1 in 50 games that were better in Xbox in major non-graphical ways. Even when PS2 version is inferior it usually sells better, anyway. XBox is really awesome if you like space marines, though. It's only the top-selling first-party franchise ANY of the consoles have. Yeah, give it up, Sony. LOL PS2 has/had the best fighters, best RPGs, best action games, the best oddball quirky Japanese titles, the best horror games, best platformers, best selection of compilations, etc. That's not even counting the PS1 games it plays, too. XBox has...oh...maybe the best selection of FPSers, and a bunch of other PC-ish genres like WW2 squad shooters. PS2 kicks its ass in every other area. It's okay. You can admit you liked the games that were made for Sony's shitty hardware.

    Wii

DS outsold everything...and to think, in North America of all places. And yes, Wii sold every system...but so did PS3 as far as we can tell. So what does it matter if DS unsold it, PSP outsold it, or 360 outsold it? Wii! PS3! Shortages! Take sales figures in context! Anya knows it, but still finds it funny regardless of context. She said, "psp is crappy it shouldnt outsell anything."

There's a MadCatz Wii remote apparently in the works. With an unfortunate design, too: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/14/rumor-madcatz-wii-mote/ Ah yes, MadCatz controllers; when you only really need it to work for a week.
  20. Have a working PS2? Want a PS3 really badly but find it a bit too pricey? Well... http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/ebgamestop-of...edit-228629.php As for the PS2 breakage goes...I'll say this: Fact: Lots of early PS2s suffered from the infamous "Disc Read Error" problem, prompting a class action lawsuit against Sony which they lost. Sony's since then revised the hardware a couple of times, and when the introduced the Slim they gave it a 1 year warranty. Fact: Some Gamecubes had a similar problem, where the lens would become unfocused and be unable to read games properly. They fixed the problem and I believe made amends for any such defective consoles. Of course, if your console was out of warranty, you could re-calibrate it yourself. I've done it and my GC had no problems since. Fact: Nobody can really give concrete numbers of how many PS2s actually required replacement. I would assume at least 2-3% of the ones out now broke on their own without user error. That still would be 2-3 million, though. Half of them? Hell no. I don't think that at all, and I hate Sony. I've personally gone through 2 PS1s and I'm on my 3rd PS2. A friend of mine has a PS2 Slim that just flat out died 12 days out of warranty. I'm suspicious, sure, but I don't think that indicates a wider problem. I've had quite a few Sony systems go bad, a few Nintendo systems that were easily fixed, a Dreamcast that died, but yet all my other Sega systems kept on truckin'.

  22. Economies of scale does depend on people buying the stuff that's out there, though. There are the hardcore videophiles purchasing the next gen formats...but their future doesn't seem as certain as DVD's was. PS3 may be a "cheap Blu-Ray player," but when PS2 was a "cheap DVD player" it cost a lot less. I'd be shocked if Sony cut the PS3's price in late 2007. Considering holiday shopping insanity, and Metal Gear Solid 4, it would be the one easily-forseeable time where the price would be negligible. Of course, if 360 prices change, then I'd say it's much more likely. I expect no *big* PS3 price cuts, though. $20 off each 6-8 months seems more realistic. Sony seems to be underproducing the Core, though, which is too bad because it's in a much better position to compete with the 360. Let's also not forget about HD TVs, which will increase in adoption big time within the next year or so.
  23. Same here. If 360 would have a price cut as drastic as...say $50, look at it then. The Core pack would be priced the same as the Wii, but you still have to buy a memory card for it to save games, plus the Core doesn't come with a game at all. Nintendo already has an easy strategy for price-cutting the Wii when they're ready: remove Wii Sports, sell the system for $200, and budget-release Wii Sports separately for anyone who still wants to buy it. That's exactly what they did in Japan for the Wii launch (save for budget-pricing Wii Sports, that is). Other than economies of scale, Sony doesn't really have any way to minimize the losses they're taking per console, making a price cut unfeasible.
