Fox kills the ratings themselves by making it seem as though Boston and the Yankees are the only two teams in baseball worth caring about (although they're not alone in that regard). When they get eliminated, everyone stops watching because the other teams aren't perceived as being important enough for anyone outside their home cities to care.
