WWE 24/7 Discussion Thread - November 2007
cabbageboy replied to DrVenkman PhD's topic in WWE Multimedia
What the hell, I enjoyed Survivor Series 1990. The Gobbledygooker stuff is of course retarded but the rest of the show is a nice trip down memory lane. The whole thing seemed a bit rushed though compared to the first 2 Series. -
Well Known Wrestlers Without Well Known Matches?
cabbageboy replied to zappafrank's topic in General Wrestling
I am baffled at the whole DiBiase WM IV rumor about him originally winning the belt. My god that PPV had to be the War and Peace of pro wrestling....it lasted seemingly 5 hours. I can't seriously believe they would think of having the biggest heel in the tourney win the damn thing after an insanely long and exhausting PPV. As far as HTM goes, bear in mind that the Warrior match was impromptu and so he could save face by saying he wasn't ready for Warrior, but was instead ready for Beefcake. -
I remember seeing Harry on that episode of Confidential after his dad died, they showed Bulldog's last match tagging with his son. I thought Harry was a tall kid, but that he had zero muscle. Then I see him down in OVW and he's quite a bit bulked up. I guess I know why now. As far as Masters goes, honestly who would give a shit what he had to say against WWE? All WWE would have to say in response is "Hey, we fired the guy after multiple steroid violations and now he's just bitter."

Well Known Wrestlers Without Well Known Matches?

DiBiase might have some classic matches on his resume, but the problem is that hardly anyone has seen any of it. Unless you lived in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, or Louisiana you might not know much about Mid South (UWF). To me DiBiase was all about the Million Dollar Man gimmick. From what little I have seen of his pre 1987 work it's quite odd to hear him being announced from Omaha and being a regular guy. -
I have yet to watch this show but what is with TNA having the same angle all over the show with various guys having problems with their women? The main angle has Kurt/Karen constantly arguing, then there's Roode and Brooks, this new stuff with Hoyt/Rave/Hemme, even some vague tension with Jackie and Storm. TNA desperately needs to stop with the goofy sports entertainment style crap. TNA has it all over WWE when it comes to actual in ring talent, so why not use these guys?

You will be once you actually WATCH that Starrcade. The first couple of cruiser matches are good stuff, but after that the show starts veering in the horrifying direction WCW went in for most of 1999. That said, I've always defended Nash beating Goldberg as decent booking. It's just what they did after it that sucked. -
Just wondering but what did Punk do last year in terms of crapping on the show? Were they trying to say that the stuff from The Shining really happened at that hotel? I heard it mentioned elsewhere but could WWE be holding off on Jericho because the guy simply isn't in ring shape yet? He might need to bulk up a bit.

Jake's stuff vs. Macho was really good, though I dunno if any of the matches are flat out classics. As far as Martel goes, I think the match from Oct. 1993 with Razor Ramon is a really excellent match, and he had all sorts of good matches with the Can Ams and Strike Force. Surely he had some classic matches as AWA champion. Ted DiBiase has always been overrated to me. He had some decent matches with Savage in 1988, but I can't think of anything else that great. -
I watched some of that Ghost Hunters show and it was so cheesy. Having been to Waverly Hills before and taken a tour I can tell you it's really not that scary. Or at least it isn't due to ghosts and such....if it scared me at all it was due to the insane disrepair that the building is in. Some parts are physically dangerous. It was a hospital where people died of TB....why is that so scary?

Batman and Robin was something I thought really sucked when I first saw it, but now I at least laugh my ass off at it for camp value. For all the praise that Batman Returns gets in some quarters there's shit just as stupid in it (army of penguins with bombs??). Those responses from people don't shock me. Batman Begins was very much a fanboy type movie, something appealing to people who have read a few graphic novels. It takes a couple of viewings to really let it sink in. The Dark Knight will fare better since The Joker is a more marketable villain than anyone in the previous film, but I won't be shocked to hear comments like "This guy that was the Joker sucked....we want Nicholson."

Last year's Survivor Series was a bit of a misfire due to the frustrating time constraints on the matches. Though I have to admit I laughed my ass off at DX/Hardys/Punk sweeping Rated RKO 5-0. How about the rub on the 87 Survivor Series given to the Stallions and the Bees in the tag match? Or the Conquistadors in 1988? Of course none of it ended up meaning much, but it was still fun. A good way to let the jobbers have their day.

If they are going to hold off on Jericho until the Rumble here is a piece of advice for WWE: Stop running the SaveUs vignettes. If they stopped running them for a month or so and then picked up a few weeks away from the Rumble with an actual solid date on it like "SaveUs....at the Royal Rumble" then that would probably draw interest. If the plan isn't to just debut Jericho between now and Survivor Series then it's goofy to keep running these SaveUs bits every week, and then have it just be Jericho eventually anyway.

Someone clarify this for me....were Williams and Gordy actually called the Miracle Violence Connection in WCW? I don't really remember that, I always just thought they were simply Williams and Gordy. -
Survivor Series is always a fun and enjoyable PPV. I like nearly all of the first 10 Survivor Series shows, ironically 1997 might be one of the few I thought sucked.

Monster Mash Battle Royal. Miz Vs Morrison. More Balls & Kelly.

By the way that Ghost Hunters show is coming from Waverly Hills sanitarium here in Louisville. The place is actually just about 3 minutes from my parents' house. Something like 60,000 TB patients died at the place, but would you believe until all this recent hype about it I never knew the place existed? Having been there I didn't really think there were any ghosts, but I was in a group. It might be freaky alone. The only real scary stuff is due to the physical disrepair of the building itself....it's really a messed up, vandalized place. -
Okay I am with you on UT vs. Batista in the HIAC with Edge having a chainsaw, but not so much Orton vs. Michaels with the inevitable 10th anniversary of the Montreal screwjob.
-
To be honest I never much cared about seeing a blow off to Austin/Bret. By mid 1997 they had fought so often that I really just wanted them to move on, which they did. Bret had beaten Austin nearly every time anyway, so would Austin have gotten that much out of a win? Things turned out fine regardless. Some of these feuds are better than others. After Austin beat Owen AFTER Owen broke his neck and then basically squashed him at Survivor Series 97 I don't see much potential in that feud. Shamrock might have been an interesting feud, but would it have drawn more than the UT and Kane stuff Austin was doing? Shamrock would have been good as a Corporation henchman thrown Austin's way on a nothing PPV.
-
I don't see how there can be a no contest in a HIAC match. Are we to assume that Edge will come back and run in? It is a bit odd to basically announce he will be running in with a chainsaw.

Who knows, I guess just a victim of the SD crossover stuff. Why have Mark Henry win that monster mash thing? Wouldn't Big Daddy V have made more sense considering he was the only actual ECW guy in the match? -
It will be very difficult for the loser of NE/Indy to even get to the Super Bowl, since they likely wouldn't get home field in the playoffs. I can see the Pats winning in the RCA Dome more than the Colts winning at Foxboro though. Just wondering but why didn't NBC get this game for the Sunday night game so that everyone in the country could see it? Here are my picks: CIN @ BUF: Oh dear. Buffalo is actually decent at home and with a win could get to .500. Of course they will screw it up. Bengals by 3. SF @ ATL: This is like the blind meeting the blind here. The Niners can't score at all though, so I'll take the Falcons in a 14-13 type game. DEN @ DET: Feel the awesomeness of the....Lions?! Denver so does not rock my world, so I'll take the Lions by 10. GB @ KC: The Chiefs are winning some games but I can't figure out precisely how. Favre will find some way to win at Arrowhead. Packers by 6. SD @ MIN: Chargers look to be back on track with a healthy string of jobbers to squash. SD by 14. JAC @ NO: I think the Saints are back on track as well, and besides isn't Quinn Gray starting again for the Jags? Saints by 7. WAS @ NYJ: The Redskins need a win big time after the degrading beatdown last week. The Jets are tailor made for that. Washington by 8. CAR @ TEN: Carolina can win on the road, but they suck at home. Thus: Carolina 21-17. ARI @ TB: Tampa needs a win having dropped 2 straight. Enter the Cardinals. It will be close though. Bucs by 3. SEA @ CLE: I have no idea what to make of either of these teams. What the hell, I'll take the Browns at home by 7. HOU @ OAK: Texans are struggling after a decent start. The Raiders aren't actually THAT bad despite their record, so I'll take them by 5. NE @ INDY: I am not sure either way who will win this, but this is one I'll be glued to the screen to see. I'll say the Colts win this by 3 points on a Vinatieri FG at the buzzer, 38-35. Then the Colts turn around the next week and lose at San Diego. DAL @ PHI: Does the world really need the Eagles making another run at the playoffs? If Romo doesn't screw it up (which can be a big if) the Cowboys should win. Dallas by 7. BAL @ PIT: The Ravens are perplexing this year with their QB situation. I'm not a big Roethisberger fan, but I would take him over Kyle Boller. Steelers by 10.

I think Flair and Vader also had a cage match at SuperBrawl in 1994. But yeah the Starrcade 93 one is the obvious choice to show. I will have to see SS 1990 and 95. I haven't seen the 1990 show in years. -
The odd thing is that Mike Tenay used to be a good announcer back in WCW when he was more laid back and didn't constantly scream. In fact I think he's a major reason why the luchadores got over in the USA, since he could relate facts about the cruisers and put them over as a big deal (whereas witness the WWF's lame attempt at AAA cross promoting in 1997). He wasn't too bad in the early days of TNA either. I think it's mostly been in the Orlando studio shows where Tenay is way over the top. I think it's mainly that someone on the production end in TNA insists on them calling the shows in that loud fashion.

You know what Ithought last night? Take a look at who is in the main event of Survivor Series: Shawn Michaels. 10 years after Montreal. Once Vince got in his face last night I started realizing where this could be headed. I know these various Montreal rehashes are tired, but HBK is the one guy that might be amusing to see get screwed. Poetic justice and all that.
-
Yeah the Tenay angle was really strange. The dude is an announcer, why the hell is he trying to dictate policy to the management? I could tolerate the Cornette aspect of Angle/Sting if I hadn't already seen him act like an incompetent boob last year with Jeff Jarrett. He sorta stripped Jarrett, then gives him the belt again. He sorta fires Hebner, but brings him back again. I thought at that point that he might be veering into a heel turn, but no he just was that inept as a GM. Oh, and he also punished Jarrett by putting him in a NON TITLE match with Samoa Joe. Let's also consider that Cornette blathered about people having to earn their spot in TNA, yet he gives Pacman Jones a tag title match for the hell of it. Now of course is this whole Sting/Angle feud, and he lets Angle keep the belt. If Cornette isn't turning heel at some point, then he's being booked to look like shit.
-
Sure, Vince got me to watch the show last night. Of course that isn't saying much considering I've watched Raw almost every week since Jan. 1993. That said, they made a mistake in not putting Jericho on last night. The time was right, people were ready for it (in a good way, not in a "this is so predictable" way). At this point you know what they could do? Have SaveUs be someone else. Everyone under the sun thinks it is Jericho, so this might be a time for a Russo type swerve. Have it be Lashley or whoever, and then Jericho will debut running in out of the crowd to attack someone a couple of weeks later. The only drawback to that idea though is that WWE has already fucked fans over this year on major storylines with the Vince limo angle and the bastard son angle.
