The Old School questions thread

Recommended Posts

From a review of the 5/7/01 Raw:

Rikishi. Yep, the culmination of our opening segment is Rikishi. Not that I don't like the guy- but that's what this is all leading to, cause UNDERTAKER's hurt, TRIPLE H is "under the weather" and we just can't expect STONE COLD to work for two whole hours. Foley tells Rikishi that he shouldn't be taking orders from the McMahons- after all, where were they when he was getting beat up by the Undertaker last week on Smackdown? Stephanie tells Rikishi to do it or he'll end up fired like Foley. Regal offers to "beat some sense" into the big guy, but as he rushes Rikishi hits the savate kick and the McMahon's roll out of the ring. Before Rikishi can leave, Foley gets him to dance to his old theme music. Funny stuff there. Vince returns with a microphone, and tells Rikishi that as punishment, he'll have to face Stone Cold Steve Austin tonight in a non-title match. We cut to commercial.

Last I saw him, he was managing the immortal tag team of Big T and Stevie Ray in WCW. I read somewhere that he had some degree of law, but take that with a grain of salt.

I was barely late 00-mid 01 WWF (Sad, I know), so I'm wondering how the hell Rikishi turned face again?

Officially when he gave Stephanie McMahon the stinkface later on in the Raw previosuly transcribed.

WWF @ Columbus, OH - State Fairgrounds - August 13, 1985

The Missing Link defeated SD Jones

The Junkyard Dog defeated Les Thornton

Paul Orndorff defeated the Iron Sheik

Don Muraco defeated Tony Atlas

WWF Tag Team Champions Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo defeated Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake

WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan defeated Big John Studd via count-out

How in the World did this show draw 50,000 fans? Was the State fair really that big that 30,000 extra people showed up?

And this is why I don't post attendances on my website. Lord knows how badly some of those numbers are inflated.

Watching WM8 the other day and a few questions popped up:

Was Shane McMahon one of the 'officials' at ringside when Liz came down during the Flair/Savage match?

The ending to the match between Money Inc/Natural Disasters - was this the only time a champion/s has been intentionally counted out in WWF/E PPV history?

It seems like every time a heel attempts to walk out of a match the ref gives them the "count of ten" ultimatum to get back in the ring. This is the only exception i can think of.

Pretty sure the Quebecers did it at Wrestlemania X.

Shane was an "extra" ref plenty of times before he became an on screen personality. He is especially visiable during most of the early Royal Rumbles as well as during a few Survivor Series' I believe.

He is especially noticeable during WWF Survivor Series 1990 as one of the ref's outside of the ring.

Thanks.

What the hell was up with Randy Savage during the later years of WCW. From summer of 99 on, he just seemingly disappeared and they never mentioned it. Was he released? I remember he was supposed to make a big comeback in early 00 during Kevin Sullivan's horrific booking reign to feud with Sid and Savage actually appeared on a few house shows at the time. But nothing ever came of it.

This implies that Honky Tonk Man never managed to pull that off even though he tried so many times. Obviously he did it at the Survivor Series 1987 (aaah sweet nostalgia) but of course the IC title wasn't on the line there.

How did Kanyon and Raven become friends in WCW? Coming off of the 3 way feud(also involving Saturn) it confused the hell out of me since I don't remember an explanation.

Don't know if this fits the timeframe, but in 2001, when they did the angle where Stacy Carter had to join RTC. Did her final scenes with the company ever air? She got fired before the show was supposed to air. They did an angle where they heavily implied she had sex with Ivory. The idea was the RTC members couldn't resist her sexual powers or something. Did this air on TV, because I know the show was taped before her and Lawler left.

I seem to remember Dustin Rhodes being in the WWF around Summerslam 91 teaming with his pop against Money Inc. How long was his first federation stint and besides that match, what were some of his major matches?

About a year too late there. Dusty and Dustin left the WWF right after the 91 Rumble, both jumping to WCW where Dusty began doing commentary for the pay-per-views.

Dustin didn't do much other than help fuel the Dusty / Dibiase feud. He went over some of the enhancement guys but was beat around the country by Barbarian and some of the other midcard heels. Keep in mind, he was very young and still somewhat green at the time.

At WrestleMania XII, was there any reason for Shawn to superkick the timekeeper? Or was it just to waste a few seconds?

Probably and I also felt that it built up the like out of his mind balls to the wall attitde Michaels had during that match and that he was doing anything to win the WWF Title and accidentally hit the timekeeper instead of Bret with a superkick.

Thanks.

at what point did it become "ok" to use the sharpshooter after Bret left?

I mean, it is by no means a common move, but besides Survivor Series 98, I recall a definite dead period where it seemed like the move as "off-limits."

Also, who used/uses the move? I know The Rock and Benoit have it in their movesets, but who else?

Obviously, Owen used the Sharpshooter for the rest of his career. Besides him and Survivor Series 98 (which was just used to hint a screw job), I'd say the first guy might be Benoit, who used it occasionally in 2000. Both Austin and Rock used it at WM X7, and after that, Rock made it one of his trademarks. Lance Storm used it from 2002 and onward.
