The Old School questions thread

Recommended Posts

Sort of branching off a previous question, but how did WCW convince Hogan to drop the belt at FB99? He just changed from Hollywood Hogan to Hulk Hogan and I'm sure he felt he was fresh for another extended title run. But Sting won the title after wacking him w/ the bat.

Why/how did the Truth Commission breakup in 98?

What became of Armageddon(Recon and Sniper)? I recall JR mentioning them pretty highly in a few Raw magazines, but I only ever recall seeing them get eliminated by Kurrgan and Jackyl in the WM14 Battle Royale and then beating jobbers on Shotgun for about a month.

Why wasn't Kurrgan pushed better? The Oddities were a god damned joke, and the lack of Kurrgan push was probably the only booking fuck-up in 98 for WWF.

Was Kurrgan's lack of success in any way a result of the awful terms Jackyl left on?

At the time, I honestly thought the 2 favorites to win the 1998 Royal Rumble were Kurrgan and Owen Hart. I figured Austin was far too obvious to actually win it.

Also, what were the horrible circumstances behind The Jackyl's departure?

Can anyone tell me the circumstances surrounding Rude's departure from WWF, and arrival at WCW in 91?

Was he fired? Quit?

He left WWF in the Fall of 1990 in a contract dispute. He was scheduled to Main Event a House show run against the Ultimate Warrior, but couldn't due to an injury. WWF advertised him as wrestling at those shows anyway (even thought they knew he wasn't). Rude felt that since his name helped draw the house, he should get paid as if he was there. WWF disagreed. I'm guessing he went to WCW as soon as it was legally safe to.

A few interesting house show results I found:

WWF @ Pittsburgh, PA - Civic Arena - August 2, 1991 (5,000)

Kerry Von Erich pinned the Barbarian

Davey Boy Smith defeated Typhoon via count-out

Col. Mustafa pinned Koko B. Ware

The Mountie & WWF Tag Team Champions the Nasty Boys defeated the Big Bossman & the Legion of Doom

Sgt. Slaughter defeated Jim Duggan via disqualification

Marty Jannetty & Shane Douglas (sub. for Shawn Michaels) defeated the Orient Express

Randy Savage (sub. for the Ultimate Warrior) pinned the Undertaker

Never knew Taker was pinned on a house show like that. I knew he lost via DQ to Warrior and in bodybag matches to Justice, but not getting pinned straight up. (Though he did lose that match to Tito in Spain)

Also...

WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - January 31, 1992 (9,000)

Televised on the MSG Network - included Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan on commentary:

Prime Time Wrestling - 2/24/92: Rick Martel pinned Kerry Von Erich at 9:39 with his feet on the ropes; after the bout, Von Erich chased Martel backstage (Von Erich's last MSG appearance)

Prime Time Wrestling - 3/2/92: Shawn Michaels pinned Jimmy Snuka with the Teardrop suplex at 12:17 following a superkick (Snuka's last MSG apperance as a full-time wrestler)

Sid Justice pinned the Mountie at 4:26 with the powerbomb

Prime Time Wrestling - 2/17/92: The Warlord (w/ Harvey Wippleman) pinned Hercules at 5:39 with a running powerslam

Sgt. Slaughter & Jim Duggan defeated the Nasty Boys via count-out at 10:26 after Duggan assaulted Knobbs on the floor with his 2x4 and Slaughter shoved Saggs into the ringpost

Chris Walker pinned Kato at 9:44 with a flying bodypress

The Undertaker (w/ Paul Bearer) pinned Bret Hart at 12:27 after hitting him with the urn, moments after Hart released the Sharpshooter to go after Bearer who was holding the referee down

Prime Time Wrestling - 5/11/92: Repo Man pinned Virgil with a back elbow at 11:04

Randy Savage (w/ Miss Elizabeth) pinned Jake Roberts at 6:07 with the flying elbowsmash; early in the bout, Elizabeth was escorted backstage (Roberts' last MSG appearance for 4 years; Elizabeth's last MSG appearance)

Was that Bret match televised, then? Anybody know if it was any good?

Yup, it was televised on the MSG Network. I saw it and it was basically an extended squash for Taker with Bret selling his ass off. This was the period where Bret was being buried over the contract dispute.

I know this has been brought up on here before, but what the hell was with Hogan's eye at Wrestlemania 9? My girlfriend and I just watched it on the WM Anthology, but neither of us can remember it. I thought I heard Savage punched him......?

Alleged jet ski accident.

That was my first instinct, but didn't that happen to Beefcake as well? What are the odds?

On the other hand, his eye certainly didn't look like it was the result of a punch.

I don't know about Beefcake.

He was trying to help a parasailing noobie land and she wound up kicking him in the face at about 40 kMh.

Apparently Hulk knew a good plastic surgeon and he pulled some strings, i.e 12 hours or so of visiting sick kids while the surgeon fixed up Beefcake.

This, says Diana Hart's book.

At the 95 Rumble, Shawn Michaels comes out as number one and balls his fist up at the camera with the initials "TK" on the back of the glove.  Whose initials are those?

I think its the brand name, since IIRC his boots at the time also had the same intials on them. and "the kliq" was shawns name for his fans in 96, "the clique" was hbk/nash, hall, hhh, waltman.

I know this was from a few pages back, but I know the answer, and it isn't "The Kliq".

"T" and "K" stood for Themis Klarides, his girlfriend at the time. The fact that he lovingly kissed both gloves and one of them had a heart on it should have given it away.

She was a fitness trainer and attorney who was one of the RAW ring girls (who paraded around with the signs in between matches) for a while as well. She was featured in WWF Magazine a couple of times.

Shawn gives her credit in his book for helping him get in shape for the Iron Man match at WM XII.

Ironically enough, she is now a state representative from Connecticut:

Actually, that helps the argument that it was for Nash, HHH, Hall, & Waltman.

About HH '99, I HEARD another reason Hogan didn't work the match because he had a "knee injury", not sure what to call on that one.

How did Jimmy Hart turn on the Hart Foundation and what was the reason and why did Mr. Fuji turn on Demolition?

How did Jimmy Hart turn on the Hart Foundation and what was the reason and why did Mr. Fuji turn on Demolition?

Following WrestleMania 4, they pushed the Harts mainly as singles wrestlers, mostly Bret as a face. After several weeks of Bret beating "heel" jobbers without Jimmy Hart at ringside, Jimmy appeared at ringside one time with Bret, but Bret sent him backstage, not long after that Jimmy came to ringside again but refused to go backstage this time, and so Neidhart came out and ordered that he went. Jimmy then eventually aligned himself with the Rougeau Brothers and would give them 25% each of the Hart Foundation's contracts as he still was still contractually involved with them.

As for Fuji, I believe they just wanted to turn Demolition face, as in house show matches with Demo and the Powers of Pain, Demolition who were supposed to be the heels were getting cheered more than the POP, who were the faces.

Finally some clarification. That has to be it cuz the clique was spelled with a C, Kliq was the onair name for shawns fans (they started referring to them as such in early 96 when he won the rumble)

I am watching the 95 rumble match on wwe.com 24/7 right now and he indeed has the TK with hearts and he kisses them.

I'm pretty sure the Savage thing is a falsity that picked up momentum when someone with the initials S.K. reported it as fact in a rant or something. I think. Don't quote me on that.

When did the original wwf.com hit the web and what did the page look like?

Look.

Anyone remember the AOL page? Back in 96 when my some friends of mine first went online, they did so through free AOL trials (and boy were we stupid kids when it came to "free" trials from AOL and Prodigy) and I remember doing the Keyword WWF thing. They used to have a section to download theme music .wav files and pictures of Sunny, which was pretty cool.

My knowledge of the WWF web content was the AOL page, when I first discovered the web in April of 1997.

There isn't much that I remember of it besides the "Downloads" Section (30 second .wav clips of theme music), WWF Trivia, and the soundbite of Vince McMahon introducing you to the homepage ("Welcome to the World Wrestling Federation on AOL dot com!")

I had never seen World War 3 1995 until today and though I recall hearing about Hogan burning a newsletter on PPV, I didn't realize it was that one. That was such a bizarre thing to see in a pre-Russo WCW - Hogan saying "this thing says The Giant is winning" and then throwing it in a fire.

Anyway, my questions are:

1. Was there some report in the Observer (or Torch) that Savage was injured at this time? That seemed to be the context Hogan brought the newsletter up in before talking about The Giant. If so, was Savage winning the title some sort of big "screw you" to Meltzer (or whoever)?.

2. Hogan was dressed in black and talked about going to the dark side, then burned the black clothes and said that would never happen. What the hell was this about?

Basically the pseudo-faction of Sting/Savage/Hogan were having tizzies for weeks. Who's on who's side? Is Sting w/ Luger? Is Luger not a bad guy after all? Who can Savage trust? What's Hogan's deal? Blah blah blah. So, Hogan and Savage both reverted to the 'dark side' (IIRC, after Hogan had his mustache shaved off by the DoD) where they dressed in black despite remaining faces. They felt this would help them in the battle w/ the Dungeon of Doom. Most notably, Hogan dressed in black in his 1st match vs. Sting.

Hogan was in black partially to try to freshen up his character, since he was being boo'd by fans. Hogan left very quickly after WW3 and skipped Starcade. He came back in January to set up the Cage match vs Giant, then Savage/Hogan vs The World in the Big Cage , then Hogan went away until turning heel for the NwO

Owen was 'the little nugget of turd' that wouldn't go down the toilet when rest of the shit is flushed away, with the other shit == Bret, DBS, & Neidhart.
