What was up with The Giant smoking cigarettes during his matches in 1998?

Jesus Christ, I forgot all about that. Why the hell was he?

The only thing better would be if Disco Inferno had a cocaine mirror in his corner, and he'd crawled over and did a line, giving him the juice to make a huge comeback.

I'm pretty sure at the time he really was smoking and being lazy, something along those lines so they just went with it and let him be the big lazy giant instead of jumping his ass about it.

Is there any truth to the rumour that Triple H wanted to face Hogan after HBK wasn't in "shape" to wrestle him at Wrestlemania X-7? After both Hogan and HBK failed, then we had the two week insta-feud with Taker?

I think they were originally hoping for an HHH/Ray Lewis match at WMX7.

Re: Giant Smoking

I thought that was an inside joke about him being gross or something. Who knows...

I stumbled across an article that described a bunch of ECW wrestlers kicking Scott Hall from the locker room during his brief stint there in 2000; Anyone remember this? Whom were the wrestlers? Why was it done?

The only ones I could think of with heat would be probably Sandman...98 WCW. I can't think of anyone else who would have crossed paths with him in another promotion, save maybe Pierre Oulette, Raven (and that's a stretch, given the time frame), and Justin Credible (and he was alright with the Kliq, wasn't he?)

I had heard a different version -- that he was kicked out of the locker room by the Triple Threat (version 2.1) when he was trying to get backstage to visit Justin Credible in '97 or '98.

Storm, Candido, Bigelow? I'd buy that....My memory of the Triple Threat is a little hazy, but inserting Shane Douglas into that equation only makes your story more believable.

It was the Douglas/Candido/Bigelow version.

Nope, not officially at least. Not sure why.

WCW closed down before DVD started getting really hot. I don't think WWF started releasing DVDs 'til 2001 or 2002, IIRC.

WrestleMania XV was the first DVD they released and they released WrestleMania 2000 on DVD too. But I don't think they released every pay per view until '01.

I know in 2001 that the Royal Rumble and No Way Out did not get a DVD. I'm not sure if Backlash or Judgment Day, or KOTR had one either but everything from Invasion on was put on DVD.

WWE released a few DVDs starting in 99, yet WCW never released any, as even their VHS tapes were much harder to find than WWE:

1999

Wrestlemania XV

Summerslam 99

2000

Royal Rumble 2000

Wrestlemania 2000

King of the Ring 2000

Summerslam 2000

Survivor Series 2000

2001

Royal Rumble

Wrestlemania - the rest of the PPVs

Basically they just did the big two in 1999 when DVDs were starting to get big, did the big five in 2000, along with starting to produce some of their other features and in 2001 they did the Rumble, skipped No Way Out and every single PPV since has been on DVD.

Just watched the Invasion match featuring Show/Gunn/Albert vs. Kanyon/Stasiak/Morris.

My question is, what the hell is up with the WCW team's music? TOTAL Mr. Perfect ripoff right there. Was that music that was played something the WWE used for them, or was that actual ORIGINAL WCW music? If so, count it in as ANOTHER Russo ripoff?

That was "original" WCW music, if you could even say that.

Shawn Stasiak was doing his angle with Curt Hennig in WCW and started calling himself "PerfectShawn" Stasiak, ripping off Hennig's Perfect gimmick in WWE, complete with rip off music.

So I guess WWE held onto that music and used it for him in WWE, briefly.

During the Raw vs. Smackdown 5 on 5 match from Survivor Series 2005, were the Raw and Smackdown announcing teams shooting on each other? If you haven't seen the match:

The commentary made this match amsuing. Why so much tension between the 5 of them? Tazz seemed especially PISSED at something here.

I thought the announcers had the best match of the night.

I think this was under direction from Vince who wanted the announcers to play their natural dislike for each other into the storyline of the main event. It was obviously part of the storyline, but I'd say that most, if not all, of the insults thrown were the real feelings of the person throwing them.

They did the same thing during the ECW restart angle last year. If you can, find a copy of the ECW vs. WWE show they aired on the Wednesday before ONS, the announcers are ripping on each other the whole time.

What was the deal with Jeff Jarrett attacking Owen Hart at The Royal Rumble? I thought that was random.

Which Rumble?

Had to be 1998 during the NWA angle, but I don't remember them feuding at the time either

The only thing I could think of for Owen-Jarrett was that DX payed Jarrett & Cornette off or something, but no reason was ever specifically mentioned. In fact, after the Rumble, I think the only confrontation I remember was a match between them either right before or after No Way Out weeks later.

Speaking of Jarrett and the NWA angle...did he ever actually defend the NWA North American Title that he won in that match with Barry Windham? It seems like he had it for a couple weeks, and then just abandoned it, IIRC.

Yep, on a couple RAWs.

Here are the ones that were televised

WWF @ Fresno, CA - Selland Arena - January 19, 1998 (7,329)

Raw is War - featured Steve Austin interrupting Mike Tyson's in-ring appearance, eventually leading to a confrontation between the two men before they were pulled apart; during the brawl, Vince McMahon began yelling at Austin, "You ruined it!":

Chainz, Skull, & 8-Ball fought Farooq, Kama, & D-Lo to a double disqualification at 4:41 when all six men began brawling in the ring

Marc Mero (w/ Sable) pinned Tom Brandi with a low blow and the TKO at 3:30

The Quebecars defeated Cactus Jack & Terry Funk via disqualification at 3:16 after Cactus applied the Mandible Claw on the referee

NWA North American Champion Jeff Jarrett (w/ Jim Cornette & the Rock 'n' Roll Express) pinned Bradshaw (w/ Barry Windham) at 3:41 after Windham accidentally clotheslined his partner; after the match, Windham officially turned on Bradshaw

Owen Hart, WWF Light Heavyweight Champion Taka Michinoku, & the Headbangers defeated Los Boricuas at 3:01 after Hart applied the Sharpshooter on Jose Estrada

WWF IC Champion the Rock pinned Ahmed Johnson at 2:43 after Mark Henry hit Ahmed with a chair

WWF Tag Team Champions Billy Gunn & the Road Dogg defeated Henry & Phinneas Godwinn at 4:53 after Gunn hit Phinneas with a brick-loaded stuffed pig

Dark match after the show: The Legion of Doom & Ahmed Johnson defeated WWF IC Champion the Rock, Farooq, & Mark Henry when Road Warrior Hawk pinned Farooq following the Doomsday Device

WWF @ Davis, CA - Recreation Hall - January 20, 1998 (5,926; sell out)

Vic Grimes defeated Erin O'Grady

The Irish Assassin defeated Christopher Daniels

Shotgun - 1/31/98:

NWA North American Champino Jeff Jarrett pinned Chainz after the Rock 'n' Roll Express interfered

WWF Light Heavyweight Champion Taka Michinoku pinned Jesus Castillo with a hurricanrana

Kurrgan defeated Michael Modest via submission with the claw

Bradshaw pinned Donovan Morgan with the lariat

Nova & Mosaic defeated Tarantula & Batallion

Scott Taylor pinned the Black Phantom with a DDT

Only two but he defended it against Cactus Jack (and Dude Love!) and Owen Hart on house shows in January '98.

He also defended against Bradshaw at No Way Out

Damn, overlooked that while browsing for the answer to Invader's question at Graham's site.

On a similar vein, how long were The New Blackjacks together? I had no idea they were still around in early '98.
