Can somebody explain what the deal was with Undertaker facing both Dudleys in a PPV main event, and then "killing" Paul Bearer by burying him in concrete?

Paul Heyman started managing the Dudleys again to get them motivated, and for whatever reason, they decided to kidnap Paul Bearer and the urn. Heyman apparently wanted Taker to join up with them, so he made the Concrete Crypt match for that year's Great American Bash, which was basically a regular handicap match, with Paul Bearer being held in a plastic case in the entrance with a cement truck looming. Leading up to the show, Heyman kept threatening that if Taker didn't do the "right thing", then Bearer would be put into the concrete crypt, in other words... die. Keep in mind, we never knew what the "right thing" was exactly.

So, in a very boring handicap match, Taker beat both Dudleys. All through the match, Heyman talked on the mic while slowly filling Bearer's case with cement. Taker finally scared him off and took control of the cement truck, and he filled it, apparently killing Bearer. He later implied that he had to kill Bearer because it was obvious that Bearer was his only weakness, so he couldn't allow others to exploit it.

As for the reason why it main evented a PPV, it was probably because JBL won the WWE Title from Eddie earlier in the night under bullshit circumstances, and they figured a Taker win, even under the circumstances, would be a better way to close the show.

at the time it was thought to be a heel turn as Taker-Eddie was slightly rumored on the net for sumerslam at the time before GAB (cuz no one thought JBL would actually win the title), though Eddie lost his title that night so who knows?

Eddie-Taker may have been the original plan for Summerslam. It was a last minute decision to put the belt on JBL. There were plans for a long-term reign for Eddie but after he bombed so badly in the role, they panicked and made a quick change.

They had to kill off Paul Bearer because he was having health problems.

If Eddie-Taker was the plan they would have decided upon, chances are Undertaker would have shot it down, as it was an idea of Heyman and Undertaker isn't a fan of his. The title change to JBL was done purely because Eddie was cracking under the pressure of being champion, and had nothing to do with how he was performing as champion or what business was doing with him on top.

Was Lord Alfred Hayes one?

No.

What was the deal with the Jericho/Shamrock feud? They build, and build, and build, all of a sudden Shammy gets the ol' "internal injuries," gets subbed out of the big PPV match, and is never heard from in the fed again.

Anybody know? I never remember hearing about it.

Wasn't this around the point where Sharmrock decided he wanted to get out of wrestling and try UFC again? That would explain it.

I remember Howard Finkel dressing like Jericho and attacking Shamrock.

I had stopped watching the WWE almost completely by this point. Since this is the first time I've heard this, that's fucking awesome.

It was a way to get Jericho a big rub from Shamrock on his way out. Chris Jericho injured and put the most dangerous man out of the sport. I still remenber when Jericho came out in his hockey gear for their First Blood match on Smackdown. Classic.

I think they should have at least had the match it at the PPV as they had been advertising, rather than on TV 3 days before it was supposed to go down.

maybe they didnt want to give shamrock a ppv payoff? or risk him no showing or holding them for money like Jarrett would do the following month ironically.

What happened to the IC title from WMVI to the 92 Royal Rumble? Did Warrior ever defend it? Was it put in a tournament? I don't recall hearing anything of it until Bret beat Piper at the 92 Rumble, I don't even remember Piper winning it.

Back when Benoit, Saturn, Guerrero and Malenko jumped to the WWF after Souled Out, who were the others that were rumored? Mysterio, Konnan, Kidman and Douglas? I always assumed that's why, like Benoit, Kidman was given that odd push at the PPV.

There was a tournament for the title when Warrior vacated it. Taken from the Wrestling Information Archive:

Title: WWE Intercontinental Heavyweight Title

Date: April 4, 1990 - April 23, 1990

Tournament Match #1: Mr. Perfect defeated Jimmy Snuka....Tournament Match #2: Roddy Piper and Rick Martel fought to a Double Disqualification....Tournament Match #3: Dino Bravo and Brutus Beefcake fought to a Double Count Out....Tournament Match #4: Tito Santana defeated One Man Gang....Semi-final Match #1: Mr. Perfect receives a bye....Semi-final Match #2: Tito Santana receives a bye....Tournament Final: Mr. Perfect defeated Tito Santana.

Winner of the Tournament: Mr. Perfect

Perfect eventually lost the title to Texas Tornado at Summerslam 90, but won it back on a TV taping in November that aired in December (from Cawthon's site). From there, he feuded with Big Boss Man leading to WM VII, and lost the title to Bret at Summerslam 91. Bret lost the title to the Mountie at a house show a few days prior to the 1992 Rumble, where Bret was scheduled to defend against Mountie in the first place. Piper was inserted into the match with Mountie at the Rumble where he won the title. Taken from Cawthon's site about the house show:

The Mountie pinned WWF IC Champion Bret Hart to win the title by reversing an inside cradle; after the bout, Roddy Piper made the save after the Mountie repeatedly hit Hart with the title belt; the kayfabed reason for Hart's title loss was a high fever, but it actually came about due to contract negotiations

And Bret regained the title by beating Piper at WM VIII.

Wow. I forgot about all that? If I can cover my tracks, I legitimately did mean "Piper won the IC title at RR92" not Bret beating Piper.I can't believe I managed to overlook Bret-Perfect at SS91, and the Mountie.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Not to mention- The Texas Tornado's incredibly memorable run!

*sarcasm mode off*

Speaking of that, I don't know if this is internet malarkey but I heard Davey Boy Smith was originally supposed to replace Beefcake in the match at SummerSlam '90 but he had visa problems or something, is there any truth to this or is it malarkey?

This was danced around in the Benoit thread (may he RIP), but it's getting messy in there. What happened with Snuka? I recall a post a few months ago about Vince being integral in his not going to jail....Fill me in?

I feared a google would result in clip after clip of him and the Sheik on Raw a few weeks ago.

This thought occured to me a few days ago: I wonder if Vince called up Sheik, ignorant to his shoots, and began naming off wrestlers he might appear with at Vince Appreciation Night. "Sheik, how'd you like to be on TV this week with Jake Roberts?" 'Fuck da Jake Roberts!' "Oh, how bout Brian Blair?"'Fuck da Brian Blair!' ad infinitum.

Why didn't Austin just go over HHH at Survivor Series 2000? That was absolutely one of the worst PPV finishes ever.

I've been watching the Boy Meets World with Vader on them, and it gave me memories of Vader destroying poor saps and wishing he would've destroyed that Savage kid.

Question: Did Vader appear on aynthing else?

VADER TIME!
