Last month, Coxsucker Cable informed us via letter that they would be discontinuing service to our antiquated converter box, and essentially it's time to upgrade to digi-cable, or be stuck with the unsurety of running without a box at all. I don't care too much, since I don't watch too much TV outside of sporting events, but the folks are miffed, and are looking into the alternatives, including satelite.

Since commercials obviously tell nothing other than the extreme vitriol both industries have for the other, I wanted some opinions/experiences from my fellow TSMers on the subject.

Check out my cable problems in the TNA folder in the thread "I Must Apologize, No 12/4 Diatribe". That should answer a few questions on how I feel about cable.

A few things to ask yourself is this:

Would you be able to install a satellite into your home without any bad feedback ensuing? Trees in your way or living in an apartment building can affect things like that, as can the weather.

Digital cable SOUNDS good, but can often get frozen for a few seconds.

Satallite technology has advanced enough in the last few years that weather isn't a huge deal now. It basically takes hurricane like weather to make my satallite go out for more than 5 minutes these days.

Plus East and West Coast stations are a very nice addition. Missed that show at 8? Don't worry it'll be on in L.A. in a few hours.

Does digital cable not have that in the US? We've had it here in Canada for a year now.

To be fair to cable, digital cable also has the whole East/West thing going on.

My friends would watch the West Coast showing of the Sopranos most of the time, since they didn't get home early enough to watch it the first time around.

The only negative to doing that is if say you're watching an award show or something...and someone curses on the air, it'll be edited on the West Coast feed.

Most premium stations on Digital cable have East & West stations.

And seriously, I wouldn't bitch about upgrading to digital. Its not that much more per month.

Wasn't aware that Digital Cable had that now.

Unfortunately, I have older (very antiquated) parents, meaning any little thing that raises the cost of a bill by 5-10 bucks results in continual bitching (moreso from the old man), not to mention they have that old person fear of newer technology.

Goddammit

Also, Cox has a deal if you get Digital, their Phone service, and their internet you get a certain amount of money off your bill each month. That's what I do.

But yeah, sucks about your parents. Then again you could always foot the 5-10 bucks...

Welcome to my world. That describes my household to a T.

Besides, anytime I try and convince them to get something that will obviously benefit me, they think I'm trying to scam them.

My dad's all gung-ho about digital cable, DVDs, and whatnot.

However, neither of them bother with the home computer, which allows for me to have a folder on my desktop labeled "Porn".

Nevermortal, out of curiosity, how much is your bill? I'd be interested in getting something like that, but I don't feel like spending an arm and a leg.

The situation has come up again, although now it's my own. I've had the digital cable for awhile now and haven't had any problems, but I'm moving to a new place where satellite would actually be feasible, and the whole NFL package thing is very appealing to me, but I'd still like to know other people's experience with satellite TV.

Indeed. Unless you live in Bumfuck, USA where dial-up is the only other option.

Yeah, but I refuse to pay $60 a month for it PLUS $500 for the equipment..and then be told "you can't download over 150 mbs over an indeterminate ammount of time or we'll reduce your speed to below dialup".. so I just suffer over 19.2kbps connection.

I like Comcast. I use it for cable, phone and internet.

It works much better then Vonage.

The only thing I like about it better then DirecTV is the On Demand stuff and the phone is only 30 bucks a month with tons of shit for free, plus unlimated long distance to anywhere in the US, Canada or France.

I have DirecTV...can't live without the NFL Sunday Ticket. :D

As for the weather issues...I spray the dish with PAM or other non-stick cooking spray and have almost no weather related issues.

I'm on the verge of making the jump to Satellite. Time Warner blows ASS - no WWE 24/7, no NFL Network, no Sunday Ticket. Although I do like my Roadrunner Internet, and I don't think I can get that without having their digital cable.

Thats really only good for keeping snow from piling up on the dish.

You're more likely to get WWE 24/7 with Cable than Satellite.

You can have cable internet without cable.

Really? I thought I remembered one of the Time Warner people saying that their Roadrunner Internet wasn't available unless you ordered their digital cable service.

Well shit, if I can get only Roadrunner then I might as well just cancel my digital cable now.

Time Warner probably just charges you extra for only having cable internet. Fucking scammers.
