when i visited chicago, i saw a place in wicker park called Cafe Absinthe. didn't get to go in, i guess it was too early in the day for them to be open.

Huh. So it's illegal to sell it in the US and it's prohibited against being imported, but it's not illegal to own or consume it. Weird. Since it's such a rare & quaint drug, I assume that its street price would probably be pretty high, if you could even find anyone who had it. Oh well.

I was terribly disappointed to find out that absinthe was basically just hard liquor with a few random herbs added in. I imagined it to be some bizarre hallucinogen along the lines of LSD, but no, it's apparently just plain ol' alcohol like every other drink in the world.

Well, knowing you, I assume you're right. What makes absinthe different from other hard beverages, specifically? And where/how can you buy the shit?

The main thing setting it apart is wormwood. The important chemical component in wormwood is thujone, which is supposed to have a similar affect to THC. The result is sometimes reported as somewhat psychedelic... I'd like to try it for the sake of novelty, but I don't expect it to be good enough to drink regularly at the prices it goes for. Some people get really into it for some reason though, I don't know. Marilyn Manson reportedly goes through the stuff by the case.

Where to get it, well if you know anybody who can do moonshine, they can make it for you. The laws are vague enough so plenty of places will let you order it from overseas, and hope it doesn't get seized in customs (which it probably won't, from what I hear). Goths love it, so if you know any, might see if they have any connections.

They sell it in Austria and Germany. They also do a pussy version in the UK.
